I’m looking into getting the canon k2 slr film cam and i was wondering what lense should i get to start with and also what is the best film to get for clarity and longevity Thanks in Advance
Well, I am pretty new in film SLR’s as well. My poison of choice is a Minolta XG-1. I guess for a starting lens, I would recommend a 50mm or so–f1.8. It has the same range of view as the human eye, so in essence it is average. Since it is fairly average, you can do portrait work with it for landscapes. Techincally, you can do it with any lens, but these are the perfect jack-of -all-trades. It can be really cheap as well, so get it first and explore–see what it is that floats your boat. Is that Canon manual focus or auto focus? I know minolta, not Canon…
My current collection (all manual focus):
28mm f2.8–this is my only wide angle lens. Mostly use it for group portraits or landscapes
50mm f1.4–this is my main. Use it 80% of the time and stays on the camera almost always
50mm f2–came with te camera. Just got superceded by the f1.4
58mm f1.4–really old all metal lens that is a bit radioactive (no joke). Awesome quality. Wife wants me to get rid of it since it is radioactive…
70-210 f4.5–my first zoom lens. Pretty good and light. Good for closeups when outdoors, but the slow lens speed almost always called for a tripod when used indoors
70-210 f2.8–my newest lens. Replaces the last zoom since it works really well inside the house and I can avoid using the tripod. Heavier than a newborn though
As you can see, I dont have a lot of lenses–I plan to get rid of the 50 f2 and the f4.5 zoom. That kinda takes care of what I like to shoot (landscapes and kids). There are also much longer telephoto zooms (like 300mm +) and macro lenses if you like close up photography.
As for where to get them, usually you can find some stuff at craigslist.com, keh.com, and of course, ebay.
As far as film, that i really dont know . I just use Kodak ISO 400 BW film or regular 400 color. I dont mess with the films yet since I am still getting used to the whole new lenses/SLR concept.
thanks it is auto focus
Well, auto focus or not, the first one would be the 50mm, though. Of course, a 35-80mm zoom or so wouldn’t be bad as a first lens either (unless I am mistaken, I think auto focus has a bit less selection of lenses than the old manual focus).
Again, not a Canon expert (one of my friends has one, and I’ve learned from her). Since it is autofocus, it should use an EF mount. Lenses for the EF mount seem to be on the pricier side. The 50mm 1.8 usually runs at around $80 or so. the f1.4 runs around 250, and the f1.2 runs at a cool $1000:lol: Optically, the 1.8 will be enough for most uses, though. Zooms can be a bit more expensive, depending on focal length and max aperture.

It should be fast enough for action shots. I guess the term “fster lens” is misleading. that shit confused me for the longest too. The lens itself doesnt have much to do with the shutter speed. 1.8 will let you take pics in low light environments. A 1.4 will let you take pics in lower light environments. The 1.2 will let you do it in near darkness, lol. Of course, the bigger the aperture, the bigger the glass. Reason it is called faster or slower is that the wider the aperture, the faster the shutter can be. Of course, the bigger the aperture, the less depth of field…
But yeah, the 1.8 should be good enough to do action shots. It really is a jack of all trades. What kind of stuff will you be photographing?
I have a Canon film SLR. If you’re probably on a budget, I would suggest the following lenses:
EF 50mm f/1.8
EF 28mm f/2.8
EF 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6 Mark II USM (or f/3.5-4.5 version)
The 50mm is arguably the best bang for your buck. Though some say that the 85mm f/1.8 is. It goes for 80 dollars. As for the other two, they can be had for a 100 - 150 dollars if you get it second hand through eBay or something. The f/3.5-4.5 version of the zoom is a little pricier which can be had at max… around 180 dollars or so.
Any SLR user should own a 50mm prime. If you’re looking to shoot portraits, the 85mm f/1.8 is spectacular, but is around 300 dollars. Very sharp, shallow depth of field and could be used on a dSLR without too much inconvenience. Minimum distance from subject is approximately 3 feet. As for the zoom lens, it’s pretty much a good walk around lens at a fair price. It does go down to 28mm, but it’s doesn’t perform as well as I’d want. That’s why I list a 28mm prime there as well. Going below 28mm is kind of expensive, though I think that a 24mm would be very nice to have.
I would suspect that the most convenient EOS camera package would be the body, 28-70mm f/2.8L and 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. Then you’d be all set. But this would probably run you about $2300 altogether without having taking any photos yet.
Good luck.
thanks but for 2300 if i had it id go digital my main reason for trying to go film was i thought i could get a camera and a lense for under 400 dollars and im not really in the mood to bid on crap on ebay because cats be sneaky bidding like a min before the auction ends thank you for the help
Well if you want to stay under that price cap, you pretty much are going to have to go with manual focus. MF cameras go for REALLY cheap (depending on model of course), and the lenses never break the bank, either. With my lens selection i listed above and the camera, I haven’t broken $250 yet. The thing takes excellent pictures as well, so I am not complaining.
But yeah. If you go with autofocus, you have to pay more to play; most of the AF lenses from the film cameras fit on most DSLR’s, so there is a lot of demand for them–especially if you go with Canon or Nikon, which are the systems that are used the most today.
Bodies are probably insignificant when compared to lenses. You’d be essentially saving the difference between only the bodies as most of the lenses on film cameras are interchangeable with the digital kind.
If you really wanted to go the cheap route, I’d suggest a entirely manual camera, and lenses with the M42 mount. Those are usually manual as well. That’s the ultra-cheap way. But I really am attached to DoF preview so I have a relatively newer film camera. Pentax, Minolta, and Mayima are cheap brands with good builds in general for these cameras. The Nikon FE or FM is also a very good choice as well.
If you can spend a little more (approx 600), I’d probably suggest the Canon Rebel XTi with kit lens, EF-S 15-55m. Accounting for the crop factor, it’s probably the best kit lens out there with a fairly versatile range.
If you still want the K2, then definitely get that 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6. That should be around your budget right there. The body should cost you around 150 and the lens should cost you about 200 dollars new from B&H or Adorama.
There’s another lens with the same range, but different aperture range, 4.5-5.6(?). This is a terrible kit lens that came with film cameras before. It’s very bad. Avoid it like the plague. It goes for 90 dollars and is worth well less than that.
ok where would i find this canon rebel kit your talking about ? i just want to look at it edit: this? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/457541-REG/Canon_1236B001_EOS_Digital_Rebel_XTi.html

That’s the kit I was talking about, but you probably need a wider lens to get non-blurry images. The kit lens they give is f/3.5-5.6 at its smallest (depending on what zoom length you are at). I’m not too sure if this is good enough for the shots you are aiming for. You could try, but I’d get something that was f/1.8 at its widest.
thanks man i’ll def keep this info handy for the future when i have more money to work with and get somethin nice, because the money i have right now i’m trying to get a bike together to start riding no homo
