One guy was at her exact level! If he got shot, Kei should be dead first as the bullets would have to go through her to reach him. Not to mention who is stupid enough to try that? “Get down!”? She wasn’t in a situation where she could! And yet all the bad guys get hit and the good guys are alright and on their merry way.

This was my reaction:

We got Bugs in our SBO cabinets

get hyped

uhhh…i dunno about that, kind of really seems like you are trying really hard just to find problems…
and it makes sense. she doesn’t know what situation she is in, she can’t even see her. plus there is time passed between the moment of the yelling and
the moment of the shooting, and its perfectly feasible the guy could have stood up within the allotment of time.

i just don’t agree with any of your other problems either.
i think the pacing is spot on pretty much everywhere except some parts in the last volume, where I feel like it needs a beat just for the situation
to soak into the characters a little more. I think Kei and Kaneda’s whole thing develops really well, and supports the story with interesting moments of tension (as well as comedic relief here and there)and really gives me something to care about outside of major catalyst events.

the way the characters emote (lets pretend they are actors for a moment, since they serve the same purpose) is as equally important as the context. the characters and the way the naturally express themselves is what gives weight to the context.

you can have a great story, but if you have shitty actors, then it can not be realized.

this criticism is…odd.

i actually do agree though with the drifting out between tetsuo and kaneda. if there was one area i thought it could be stronger (which he actually does way better in the movie). it does get established, but waaaayyy too late.

what’s your favorite?

That wasn’t a general problem of the series, just a really stupid moment.
Though the fighting does become tedious, boring, and usually the people going against the protagonists feel forced to lose. It was fine at first and tolerable. But it kept on going, and going, and became a bit much.

No, it doesn’t. I’m going to leave it at that. It was immensely stupid unless the badass women could care less whether Kei lived or died, which was not the case.

Thus you don’t unleash a semi-auto rifle or whatever that was when you don’t know whether you will be killing your friend. What if they had her pinned against the damn door?

And WHY would that guy stand up? He was shutting her mouth and generally restraining her. If he stood up she could start attacking them, somebody else would have to take the moment to restrain her instead for him to stand up. If he heard the shots that may not have initially hit him? The last thing a person would do is stand up in such a situation, one would duck and cover. IT MADE NO SENSE.

You have got to be shitting me. I’m just dumbfounded by that. I’m… I’m… just speechless at that.

In an anime, the way their facial expression shifts does matter. In the manga, as long as the artist is capable of drawing expressions to begin with, the context matters much more I would say. Also, Otomo’s expressions aren’t that grand; I’ve seen much better raw emotion in countless other series. I’m halfway through the final volume and I haven’t seen one panel where the emotion conveyed viscerally blew me away. They are consistently proper but not astounding (of course not every expression can be astounding, just those few select ones in pivotal moments). The general angry people yelling (96% of the emotions) is done well but that’s the case in almost all the seinen I read.

Practically every single vehicle that crashes explodes. If things like that annoy you (because that’s not how life works), then it’s annoying. It’s pretty straightforward. It bugged me in Inception too. The only place I want to see auto-explosions like that are parodies.
Some people don’t mind everything exploding all the time in a collision though, and that’s them.
This isn’t like a “real” criticism about the content or presentation though, just a gripe.

I’m actually eager to watch the movie because typically, a manga captures the moment better than the animation. But since the movie is really well-made with lots of effort put into it, it seems like it may do a better job.

Favorite what?

EDIT: “Even if you fail, you must succeed!” Haha, that line of dialogue really took me out of the moment due to my laughter.

I was going to buy Persona today but I won a beta code for Playstation Battle Allstars.

I played it for like 6 hours straight.

Hahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

your favorite manga, or whatever. i am interested to see the standard on what you judge things in this format.

for the the door situation, what else could she have done to save her friend? if she didn’t do anything, she would have been fucked, and she couldn’t really sneak in. a ‘spray and pray’ was the only situation in a moment of pressure. when you take it out of context, of course it seems odd. it was irrational, but that’s how i would expect a character to react in a moment of desperation.

its fiction. science fiction. its not supposed to operate like real life, that’s the point. I find it hard to believe that you expect everything operate how it does
in real life, especially when you seem to be someone who enjoys manga so much.

this.

and this are not a way to have a constructive conversation

I 100% disagree with this. If you have a good story, fantastic. but if you can’t make me care (which is done by the characters, the vehicles of the story, emoting and interacting with the surroundings via emotional expression, which is accomplished in a visual format with out movement such as a comic book almost completely through character pose/facial construction since there is no tone of voice to the words) then its simply that; i don’t care. it doesn’t matter how good your story is, if i don’t care about it then the work is no good.

Otomo work with expression is probably his most universally and celebrated thing. its not about being ‘grand’ or ‘raw’ like you suggest, but he his master of being subtle, which is way harder to do and much more effective.

Its really hard to also take this criticism with any kind of weight when you blew through 6, 300-400 page volumes in just a few hours. its seems like you are more skimming then anything else.

The movie is excellent, particularly in the sound department. I think he does a good job of taking advantage of what film can offer that a comic format can not.
But expect the plot to be like, way different. He changes it so he didn’t have to compromise his themes or motives by squishing so much narrative into 90 minutes,

I posted it on the last page…

It actually working made no sense in that specific situation, Kei should have gotten hit or some of the guys should have not gotten hit. And like I said, trying it made no sense either unless it didn’t matter if Kei died. Opening the door and having a stand-off would be better than killing your friend. What if she missed one of them and he used Kei as a shield too? There are countless ways that scenario could have went wrong, and the only way it could have went right was practically impossible. That makes it stupid and unbelievable.

You have to be joking; I did not expect such a low level of response from you. You’re kidding me right? Because it’s fiction I should swallow that all vehicles explode when crashing? What, in this science fiction world are lawsuits more expensive than killing the person that had an accident, thus they put bombs on all vehicles?
A fictional world is still set up with rules and logical consistency. I can accept that people have powers to destroy stuff and teleport (though really the explanations given for such a thing are pretty bad, especially at the finale). I don’t have to accept otherwise ridiculous stuff: if a person crashes their bicycle or trips and falls and explodes that’s nonsensical (unless it’s a fictional world where every minor collision with any matter causes explosions). It, too, is ridiculous for motorcycles to explode in flames every time they crash.

I claimed that I loathe most manga…
And again this is completely irrelevant. Fiction doesn’t mean you can have any 'ol nonsensical thing happen. Hollywood popularized firey explosions from vehicle crashes, and it’s been annoying ever since.

You’re going to have to tell me how you thought the development between them was good if we are to continue on that front I guess. There was so little to begin with I don’t even know how to start a case that it was bad, because it was barely existent and then after Kaheda flashed out of the world it was “love” (after it was “love” for Ryu… who [I cracked up while typing this] pretty much never even meets up with them again).

Well, I can’t comprehend how you can swallow that situation, it is totally ridiculous.
Also, despite saying I’ll leave it at that, I broke up your defense of it into like 3 separate quotes anyway and discussed them, which you didn’t respond to.

What? I don’t buy this at all. I would need major elaboration, maybe as far as to going specific examples of images.

Hahaha, what? I read every word and observed every image. This thing isn’t exactly dialogue heavy, nor does any dialogue contain layered meaning that may prompt one to pause and reflect for a moment. It took me 7 hours to get through 24,000 pages (less actually, but I’m rounding up). That’s less than a page every 10 seconds (again, this thing isn’t dialogue heavy and has many pages with no dialogue at all). I don’t know if you consider that fast reading, but I don’t. I don’t spend a ton of time ogling a single image either though, that can be done when I’m finished if something caught my eye.

Also, I just completed the series, and it somebody was to ask me how I liked it (halfway through it was “pretty good”) I would probably say something like “Eh. Mm. It was… alright, ugh, I guess. Hm.”

EDIT: I’m actually curious now what my average speed was, I’m gonna go calculate it.
EDIT2: Okay, on average I got through a single page in 11.95 seconds.

EDIT: I will say, after those 7 hours my eyes are fucking screaming at me. If my eyes had hands with little tiny knives in them they would be stabbing me as revenge for what I put them through. Hardly the first time though. 10 hours is about my limit for continuous reading on a computer screen.

EDIT AGAIN: I’m gonna channel Uncle from Jackie Chan Adventures and do a ONE MORE THING!

If I’m going to spend multiple hours reading something I’m not going to skim it, even if I find it boring or bad. I’m going to try my best to enjoy it, because hell, that’s a large time investment, and if I’m going to put that much effort into something I want to do it properly and get the full experience, not waste my time.

Only comic I ever red is pretty much Sandman. Death was super kawaii in that one.

I really like this one:

Girly, have you ever seen a Satoshi Kon film?

I like the Street Fighter mangas, mostly because they’re so terrible

Tokyo Godfathers ranks up there as one of my favorite films in all my life.

Same, I am making it a point to watch it every christmas.

Edit: 30 Chapters in: Hoooooooooooooooooooked

its not so much your actual opinions and criticisms on the piece that I think are silly, but just the nature of them.
like, if they were well formed/reasonable i would have no problem accepting them, and in some cases I even/agree.

But its super hard to take you seriously when its obvious you went in with negative standards in order find out what’s wrong. It
fills your ‘opinions’ with a load of double standards and a complete lack of believability or credit.

Let’s start with this gem.

Its absolutely ridiculous that you wouldn’t be able to accept in a world where its well established that large, fantastical, unrealistic things happen. energy, spectacle, and destruction are really obvious visual themes that play beginning to end.

a ‘low level’ response? lol. like there is some tier chart of responses or some shit. please. it wasn’t low level. its basic.
I would expect someone who talks so much about storytelling to know the basic operations between the relationship of fiction, themes, and suspension of disbelief.
trying to essentially boil it down to “its because of hollywood” comes off as really funny.
this is one of the reasons i believe your view is extremely skewed to be automatically negative.

I found there relationship to develop pretty well along with the flow of the story. They are both interesting characters to follow, and as I mentioned, it creates an interesting tension between the future of two characters and antagonizing catalyst events. And what? To me you saying the romantic factor comes out of nowhere and is completely undeveloped is really interesting coming from a Wes Anderson fan  Ryu totally comes back…and I find his involvement really interesting in the later parts of the series.

there is nothing for you too ‘buy’, you just didn’t pick up on it. this is something he has always been widely regarded for by critics, his attention to subtle details is amazing (the mannerisms of just about ever character are each so unique, even done to the most minor side characters, his attention to facial construction, Kaneda and the general being highlights in my books, his depiction and attention to detail in architecture, the list goes on). Like, once again, this is something he is famous for.
I guess it doesn’t really matter though, its pretty clear you have made up your mind

reading the tengu one, not very far (I am a slow reader). The art style is pretty cool, diggin some of the character designs. The story seems to be pretty cool so far, the only thing I don’t like is some of the dialogue is kind of eh, but that could just easily be translation being hard in some places.

I have always meant to, I have been interested in Tokyo Godfathers for a while. They sure do look pretty
