I was glancing through the press release for the PS4 at http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/pdf/130221a_e.pdf when something caught my eye. In particular, if you check the North American developer section, you see listed one important name. “Lab Zero, Inc”. Now, as Lab Zero Games is the only game company with that moniker as far as I know, I suspect this is the prelude to something special. Any one in the know care to elaborate?
Alex has been posting mysterious concept arty looking stuff on Tumblr.

Interesting timing that is.
Kicking around some ideas:

DLC/characters: I doubt it is this as the main plans for DLC and characters is through the crowd funding campaign. If Lab Zero procured some new revenue stream, that would make the crowd funding redundant. Therefore, I highly doubt there are any changes of plan on that front. Furthermore, it really has nothing to do with the PS4.

Skullgirls 2: Another unlikely hypothesis. LZG staff very recently commented on SG2’s possibility if and only if Autumn Game’s current litigation gets resolved. It hasn’t. I doubt in this short time period, magic new sources of funding became available to LZG. Furthermore, even if a new revenue source became available, I am not sure Autumn Games would be willing to relinquish IP rights to this magical mysterious third party, or have resources to dedicate to the game given their current legal challenges.

New IP/Game: This could be the secret, but if so, numerous questions remain. What genre would the game be? Another fighting game? What would this mean for skullgirls?

I imagine this is the most likely contender, but I would really shocked if they’d release a competing title (another fighter) as their second game. Not everyone is as bonkers as Arc Sys when it comes to releasing very similar competing games.
That is what i am thinking, but i am a bit dubious as to the success of such a venture. While i am sure mikez is a great programmer, his game design and gameplay expertise is with fighting games. How good would a LZG rpg, fps, rts etc. be? The
only real similarities with SG would be artstyle and character design.
Speaking for myself, art is not the reason i like skullgirls. I am not sure my loyalty to skullgirls will carry over to an unrelated LZG game of a completely different genre.
I would laugh if its a Skullgirls dating sim. I’ve seen the idea thrown around enough that it wouldn’t surprise me.
I hope it’s a new skullgirls game.
They had said they like the Metroidvania genre in the past.
Not to mention this

Oh please. I miss that genre as a whole, regardless of LZ making it or not.
