Skullgirls Event Recaps

Post here to recap your experiences at Skullgirls events and showings.

My SG otakon experience. (Cross Posted from another thread)

The only thing that surprised me more than the amount of people who knew about Skullgirls, was the amount of people who didn’t know. I can’t count the number of people who walked up to me and asked “what is this game?” So I told them, flipping on the unofficial Reverge Labs PR mode that I apparently put points into last NYCC. I have to say that everyone who actually got a chance to play the game was really impressed. The pad station had way more hype than the stick station though, but I think that’s just because there were players of higher skill at the stick station so a lot of the casuals shyed away.

The tournament had over sixty entrants, and it was epic as shit. It came down to the last match of the last set and I ended up losing and taking second :(. Peacock keepaway is rough man. It was a bit tough to get people hype, but there were a few epic moments for sure. Also I beat up on a couple homestuck cosplayers and that just made me feel good ^_^. At the beginning of the tournament they were gonna make it 1v1 only… but I complained enough like the asshole I am and they let us play whatever teams we wanted. Unfortunately it was only signle-elim though… which made me a bit salty because marvel and ae and stuff got double elim tournaments.

Oh, and when I did my “how to build an arcade stick panel” the audience had a TON of questions about SG. In fact, eventually people started asking more questions about SG and SG strategy than they did about building a damn arcade stick. The FGC is weird that way but its fun. My favorite line from that panel is someone tried to troll me by asking “What makes Skullgirls worth the money?” to which I responded “Did you get SFXT?” he responded “yes” I responded “you could have gotten four copies of Skullgirls for that price” and the room erupted into laughter.

It’s hard to deny that Persona 4 had more hype than SG did at OTA though, but that’s probably just due to the new shiney factor. Maybe if Chibi came with the new build and accepted the FREE HOTEL ROOM I GOT FOR HIM shakes fist then SG would have had the “new game hype” too. Either way, it was pretty clear that the SG community is still growing and that most people actually still don’t even know that SG exists. If we continue to bring this game to locations outside of the accepted scene, like anime, gaming, comic, or sci-fi cons, the scene will explode pretty quickly.

One more thing. Once I flipped on unofficial PR mode and started pimping the game to everyone, outlining the features and the stuff that is coming in the new patch and junk, I noticed a pattern. The most common questions I got were “when is the patch coming out” “when is the pc version coming out” and “when are DLC characters coming out?” Mike Z, I feel your pain.

Persona has an established fanbase already. The series began in 96.

Not really surprising or something to worry about.

Excellent points, however I would extend your line of reasoning further to conclude that in fact all games are for children, and people who play games should grow up and get proper adult hobbies, such as knitting or solving crossword puzzles.

Nice work on 2nd, nothing to sneeze at for a 60+ man tournament. Who was the Peacock player who won it?

ViewtifulJew. I would get tagged by a random item drop and eat argus agony in the face. He also was seriously on point with hitting argus agony twice off random assist calls.

I was at AC games the other day they had 1 setup of skullgirls between AE and marvel one guy was practising combos so i challenged him. we played 35+ matches easily my Solo Fortune against his Peacock/Double this was my first offline match against that pair. At first it was brutal and he was just smoking me, then i just tried to keep patient and wait for my openings. And it started working and once i was able to get one down the rest was pretty much in my favor. Ill be happy when damage on assists is up but I wonder if the double butt is that good or people are turning into MarlinPie.

I’ll write two of them here: Animazement and Down South Clash.

Animazement

I had secretly hoped, considering it was an anime con, that I would find players in a large con such as Animazement. Unfortunately, that was not the case. The good news is MANY MANY people asked me what game this was, and many of them were so intrigued that I offered to teach them how to play and they liked the game. Favorites were Fortune (the WTF factor of removing her own head was pretty shocking to some) and Peacock (because she’s just funny to look at).

A bad side was that unfortunately it was on a 360 with the loading glitch, so when I asked the dude running the tournament if he would allow me to fetch my PS3 (which was in my room) with a faster-loading Skullgirls he did not hesitate to say yes. He actually went out of his way to make sure Skullgirls had presence in Animazement, although he couldn’t tell why his friend’s 360 loaded so slowly, so he let me lend him my console and fun times were had.

Down South Clash

I had heard that Anderson, SC had a Skullgirls scene. If it did, I wouldn’t have known walking into Planet Comics. For three hours there were no Skullgirls casuals other than one setup whose owner decided (right before I wanted to play) to switch to SFxT. I quickly walked away from that room.

When I asked the tournament organizer (and told him what was going on), he kindly allowed me to turn off one AE setup to put in Skullgirls. Then I got to play Austin_QED in person (much to his dismay lol) and one of his friends, and also came across a really good Valentine/Double player, not knowing who he was. It went pretty even and I was thinking to myself that if I make it to GFs that I will likely be facing that guy.

Well, that guy was Masta CJ. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy lol

So sure enough I make my way to winner’s finals, and so does CJ. I try Peacock/Fortune but lose it 3-2. Loser’s finals were against Austin, which I took 3-0. Then back to the nightmare, I thought of the possibility of doing better with solo Fortune, and so I did.

I overwhelm the living shit out of him for some reason, resetting the bracket after a 3-0. What followed was some of the most hype matches I’ve ever had in SG. CJ did the right thing switching to a different Hornet Bomber (HK wasn’t doing it for him) and changed his strategy. Although I manage to get it to 2-1, he keeps his composure and manages to pull out two more wins in a row to take the tournament.

All I wanted was a SG t-shirt :frowning: but instead I found that I really am able to hold my own very well offline against great players. Kudos to MastaCJ for not letting himself be mind-fucked by solo Fortune and taking the win lol.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if it sucks.

That said, don’t respond to trolls, guys. Feeding them with replies only makes it worse. Report them, add them to your ignore list, and then move on.

While not really an official Skullgirls event or showing, our local scene here had a decent showing for a double-elimination tournament a few months ago for a sort of title event that we hold every few months where the previous winner suggests a few games and the rest of the community votes for which one will be used to decide who the new title holder is. It’s silly fun and there’s a big trophy and stuff, but anyway, Skullgirls ended up winning the vote by a pretty large margin. There ended up being ten entrants and everyone was pretty scrubby, but there were still some pretty hype moments and it was nice to see everybody excited about the game. Unfortunately, there really hasn’t been too much of the game since then, though I still try to get some games in once in a while. I think we’ll definitely have a patch party for sure. For laughs, we’ve got the whole thing in it’s horrible, unedited, and embarrassing glory on video.

I’d like to hope there’s this sort of thing going on everywhere. It feels pretty isolated out here in the midwest, so far from either coast.

I just got back from anime USA and am staving off a pretty nasty bout of convention plague. The skullgirls tournament was nice. Small but nice. We had about sixteen entrants but a few ended up wandering off and getting disqualified before their matches. We had more entrants than street fighter, blaz, guilty, p4, and mortal kombat but couldn’t beat either smash, marvel, ddr, or any of the shooter tournaments.

The convention staff tried originally to restrict the tournament to 1v1 matches only. I am finding that this is depressingly common in the more casual skullgirls world. Most people don’t seem to understand that teams of every size are balanced against solos. In fact some of the entrants didn’t even understand this as I eventually convinced the staff to let teams be allowed and two entrants complained that assists were being allowed at all. They caused a bit of a problem with convention staff saying the tournament was rigged for team users.

We had a great audience though and some really close matches. People were cheering like crazy even in the early matches. The highlight of the tourney was when a cerebella cos player decided to enter as solo cerebella. She made it a good way through the tournament and had the hype St moment too. She was on a sliver of life playing against a Peacock from a duo with a little under half her life left. Bella jumps in empty, Peacock throws out Argus to try to go for the chip won, Bella lands before the first laser frame and 360 showstoppers for the win. Good shit.

However the most reassuring thing by far is the fact that random people would walk up and constantly say “what is this game? It looks awesome!” Joe common fan still just doesn’t know about sg and seeing it at non fighting game specific events like this really spreads the word. At this point much of the fgc has made up their mind about sg but the art style alone is enough to attract some non hardcore fans.

The roughest part of the night came when I eventually won the tournament. I was helping to run the tournament cause the game room staff had gotten swamped and apparently having the guy who was calling out brackets eventually win made the tournament appear rigged to some entrants. Oops. Anyway I won a free badge to next year’s con but I get in for free for the performances I do so I just gave it to second place instead. Overall a good tournament.

Really enjoy hearing about stuff like this. I’m curious how you got involved in presenting sg/running a tournament at a convention. Is it something anyone can do, or do you need connections?

Contact the convention, offer them your services to help run events and slip in an SG tournament if they agree.

I know Ireland is a bit smaller than your fancy American cons, but after a few years of volunteering our services and advice on formats for tournaments every convention in Ireland actually seeks out RandomSelect.ie when they want games rooms run. They’ve gone from a mess of 1 game, infinite time, single elim, Akuma is banned because his sweep is too good tournaments to full international rules. While ‘casual players’ might whine about standardized rules I have only seen tournaments get larger and larger crowds of excited spectators and players at our cons thanks to proper organization - push them on this point if you do contact someone.

The games rooms in general all benefited from the FG tournaments getting run properly as the other games follow suit, so it’s actually in their best interest to get knowledgeable players in to help with this stuff.

Most conventions have a “volunteer” page that allow you to sign up. If you volunteer for enough hours you even get free entry+hotel room. So just e-mail them.
