it can drag the whole site down pretty fast and make it a target for attacks.

youāre on a privately owned site. you abide by the laws. this place is a business. itās not in their interest to be ok with stuff that could drive away new users.
the only reason GD is allowed to exist is because it most likely has the most traffic. if that werenāt the case things would likely be much tighter here.
