First, they were traitors to the Union. No matter how you try to whitewash the past, it was pretty clear by the words of the Confederate generals themselves that this was about slavery, not about state independence. I actually linked several of the Confederate leadersā speeches and op-eds in newspapers where they actually declare that slavery was the root cause of secession, but that got little to no attention in the last thread.
Even if it were independence, fuck that. GOP obviously doesnāt care about statesā rights so much as it cares about pushing their own agenda. You can see that right now with these sanctuary cities. By GOP definition, the states should be able to decide what happens with illegal immigrants. However, thatās not the case. Trump threatened to withhold funding and yesterday Sessions threatened the same. So thatās not really a believable reason.
Second, the Confederates lost. Only in America do we put up statues for the losers of a war. To idolize the losers of the war has always been a disgrace and baffling. They ripped the country literally in half and were then put on a pedestal for it. What? I donāt see people putting up shit for Mussolini, Ghaddafi, Hussein, Pol Pot, etc. So why are we doing it? Sounds really bizarre.
Third, the whole āto rememberā schtick doesnāt hold water. Do books not exist? Do we need a statue to remember the atrocities caused by that bullshit rebellion?
And last, thereās no southern pride about the Confederates. What they did was shameful. If the liberal states left the union now, after the 2016 election results, all you Reds would be saying the same thing. The only difference being is that right now we have no morally repugnant practice we are trying to keep.
And I know a lot of you are going to buck at that last post just because of who I am and what politics I (now) practice, fine. Itās a shame that you cannot understand the fundamental issue with why the Confederacy should not be celebrated. Still I have hope that one day youāll have a eureka moment and realize why itās such a thorny issue.

I donāt agree with the idea of destroying these statues since I passionately value art and history, but the Confederacy cannot be treated as a positive thing that happened in the southern states. They were traitors to the Union, and they were comparable to Neanderthals for what they fought for.
Put these statues in museums so that generations in the future will understand that the Confederacy is a thing of the past and nothing good ever came from them.

Anything which allows a public to speak should probably be up for consideration for how free speech applies to said service. Iām not saying that they should or should not, Iām mostly saying that their should be discourse about these new ways to access speech and what they have a right and responsibility to uphold and not uphold.
If the Supreme Court as an example says that these types of services are not at all subject to uphold free speech because of being private corporations and companies, then so be it, and then that can in turn be used as an example of how things are going to further proceed down the line.
As it is now though, yes, it does seem like something that at least requires a further look into.
And no, that is not unprecedented. When new technology is invented, new laws are invented with them in mind to police said technologies and allow restrictions or lack therof. And when not enough laws have been instituted, more laws get instituted.
As far as what free speech is, in laymens terms as I know it:

Free speech doesnāt protect against penalties with regards to the consequences of your speech, it simply regards your right to say it where the government is concerned.
This ALSO means that it is in fact illegal to take someoneās freedom of speech away from them. You can say what you want, you canāt however stop people from saying what they want save for specific exceptions like NDAās and gag orders and workplace rulesā¦ within certain limits.
Iām all for racists having freedom of speech because their freedom of speech protects mine. Iām against taking away racists freedom of speech because taking away their freedom of speech means eventually taking mine away, and I more highly regard my speech than that of the racistsā¦ so itās a big loss for me since I put no value into what racists say, and since what they say has no value to me, the net result of the loss of free speech is a huge loss since I gained basically nothing in the bargain, yet lost everything.

I would argue that these institutions you are describing arenāt at all āprivateā anyone can get an account to these places. Itās like saying a grocery store is private. Privately owned yes, but a service to the public. Itās just a grey area that has alway been there but is now exacerbated by the fact that public discourse now occurs via privately owned means, whereas when the first amendment was instituted there was no internet. There was word of mouth and the newspapers and almanacs.
