Lol, the irony is that when it comes to discussing changes people considered terrible in HDR, Sirlin basically either ignores them or tells them they’re flat out wrong or stupid for thinking that way. Even more ironic, HDR dividing the SF2 community is a perfect counter-argument as to why it’s sometimes best to leave a game as people remember it.
–There’s absolutely no reason to think that Marvel 2 couldn’t be better with more viable characters
–Absolutely no one is complaining about balance in Chess
–Standard pool tables have 6 pockets, not 4

Anytime I hear “Sirlin”, something upstairs screams “Sharpton”.
I see Sirlin’s article a bit off. He seems to apply the reasoning of, “any game (regardless of medium) should be revised regardless consequence”. I think there is an exception to every rule, and Classic games are that exception. If a game is going to get a re-release, people would like to relive the game design of the era. Now Sirlin says that this exception adds to this “anti-progress ideal”. Now if he said the same things about a brand new fighting game coming out, maybe I would agree with him, but he is basically saying that “Screw your sentiments about said classic. If its doing a re-release, a redesign is a must.” . Personally, I think this article hurts the purists, hardcore, and veterans that can never have that feeling of playing said game (3S in this instance) the way they remember. There has never been a close to arcade perfect port of the game, along with A3, A2, and ST. With Sirlin’s article, we can except that if there is a CVS2:OE we wont have an arcade perfect version of it because it promotes the “anti-progress ideal”.
Other things: Sirlin’s article in the first half is way too opinionated. The second half he tries to compare with starcraft but ehhh…
Yes, I’m quoting myself. I want this on the newest page before I go to bed.
sorry 3s players but yeah I kinda agree with this. kuroda is really an anomaly and nobody plays like he does.
I have difficulty appreciating sirlin rant even if I agree with some of it. No one has has the justification to say what is fun to whome.
3SO was made our of love for game that’s considered a classic. It comes with few changes to support new system platform but the over all game play (core or the game) was remain intact. while their could have been other potential opportunity, i can’t fault capcom nor the 3SO purist for not wanting their love changed. I certainly can’t appreciate it but I can understand the semantics of this game release and I even still plain to buy it simple to support the idea of porting classic to new systems and support of GGPO usage.
I’m all for balance and fair competition, but the blant saying "balance is better " is complete bull.
But really, who knows how many more revisions of sf3 there would have been had it sold better and CVS2/Marvel2 not been in the next up phase? New generation and 2nd impact came out less than a year away from each other. 3s came out two years later due to capcom flooding the market in 1998 with Crossover titles. There could have been a “Oh shit we may have fucked up with chun” version that didn’t make it out due to capcom’s move away from fighting games.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but citing his experience with a tournament scene and balancing for a game which he rebalanced/developed isn’t exactly a marketing plug. Sirlin is still a big idiot though.
this thread has wayyy too many ad hominems and jumping to insane conclusions
way to be overemotional
just because sometimes japanese players sometimes win matches with bad characters, doesn’t mean the balance is acceptable
that’s like saying a 1-9 matchup is ok because it’s not 0-10
i will not pretend like i know anything about 3s’s actual balance in japan, though. just saying.
This isnt a thread about that, but iirc in a podcast mr wizard was talking about how HDR was dropped because, according to him, it was only played at EVO and not really at majors and he didn’t want that to be the situation.
Hey guys let’s not play our bad matchups and make all games suck. Also, let’s listen to Dave Sirlin, because as you guys know he was an amazing 3s player at his local Chuckie Cheese. :lame:
Yo, honestly, I felt like I was speaking a foreign language just naming that list.
I second this.
Sirlin is the vermin that advocates tick-throwing an entire Evo tournament “as long as it works”. Scrubs, by definition, will always gravitate towards characters they believe yield even a negligible advantage. Everything is in order here.
Balance is an anathema to fun. SNK made unbalanced games up the yin-yang yet they’re still the pinnacle of this genre that all companies aspire to mimic.
Moral: If you make a roster that are all good, appealing designs and, for most part, fun to play, people will use characters they like, not only those that can mash DP > Ultras.
TM, bro. Sure Kuroda has more swag, but TM is just as good of a Q. Would TM OCV 6 teams of 3 players on each team? Probably not, but he would probably not get hit by a random Makoto’s SA2.
Except we haven’t fully explored some characters in Marvel 2. With how broken and open that game was, who knows if a few years down the line, the top tiers don’t get shaken up again.
Where’s shoultz when you need him, he could explain this better than I can.
As for 3rd Strike, it’s not even the most unbalanced game out there. Are people forgetting about Ibuki, Sean and Akuma in 2I (who make Chun and Yun look weak in comparison)?
While I see that the main point that Sirlin is making is to combat problems within fighting game systems that allow 2-4 characters to run the metagame. But 10-11 year old games like 3rd Strike & MVC2 with established competition are a bunch of “Would of,could of, should of” scenarios in terms of balance. That is why game companies continue 2 make games and try to iron out those “mistakes” from previous games, so they can provide a better experience for their fanbase old & new.
LOL @ Sirlin wanting attention due to his now defunct HDR
