Sirlin.net: "The Anti-Progress Attitude"

Umm what?

The irony of this posts is that this man here makes an ad hominem.

Hm, which one was that now?

Sirlin isn’t saying you shouldn’t like the game. He’s saying that if you like the game, you should support getting an improved version of it.

SSFIV: AE12 should remove the focus attack, you know, just because it might be worth trying.
Blazblue: CSE should remove Barrier Blocking, you know, just because it might be worth trying.
King of Fighters XIII should remove CD counters, you know, just because it might be worth trying.

You don’t go making changes to the core features of the game willy-nilly just because you don’t like it or don’t think it fits the style or whatever arbitrary reason you provide. And you for damned sure don’t do it and call it a progression of the same game. Street Fighter 3 without parries would be COMPLETELY busted and the tier lists would go completely apeshit. The Street Fighter 3 engine was made entirely with parries in mind. Parries are at the bottom level of the game engine. Bare Metal, is what it’s called.

To even entertain the notion of the engine without parries is absurdity at it’s finest.

Some people don’t like parries. Some people don’t agree with the pace/style/colors/music/characters/name of the game. That’s perfectly fine. But you can’t say that a game as old as 3S needs to be rebalanced UNLESS you are willing to accept that you will have to provide BOTH versions of the game in the same package and you MUST rename your customized rebuilt, rebalanced, updated masterful work of art to something other than Third Strike.

Something that I’ve seen a lot in this thread is that we 3S players aren’t against the idea of a rebalance for 3S, so long as we still have our game. We couldn’t care less. What we do care about is people telling us that it needs to be rebalanced. No it doesn’t. It could definitely use a balanced sequel, but we like our shitty game the way it is, thanks.

The sad thing is, he isn’t trolling. He actually thinks that would be a good idea/beneficial to the game. He’s that stupid.

Sounds like Third Strike.

First, Sirlin never said taking away all parries would be a good idea. Second, he said taking away some parries might be good in response to someone in the comment thread of that article who asked him explicitly whether or not he thought that might improve the game. He’s not chastising the 3S community for not wanting the game’s engine tinkered with. He’s chastising them for not wanting obvious and serious problems fixed.

These are facts.

  • Balancing 3S would make it into a different game. The goal was not to make a new game, it was to re-release an old one with a bunch of new features. There is nothing wrong with that.

  • Releasing a rebalanced version of 3S would split an already small community

  • The people who kept 3S alive for so many years didn’t keep playing it and playing it because they thought it was a crap game with no zoning and fireballs should be unparryable. The play it because they like it, and its fun.

  • Releasing a balance update for an old game that costs money simply does not work, and does not sell well. In conjunction with this, rebalancing a game and adding new characters doesn’t really solve anything because there will inevitably be balance issues with new characters.

You want 3S rebalanced? Hey, cool. I’d be interested to play that. It doesnt have ANYTHING TO DO with re releasing an old game, and the project in question.

And like we’ve been saying for upwards of five years: you can rebalance it all you want, but it is NOT Third Strike, so don’t call it Third Strike. I, for one, would play it. I love 3S, but if they did it, I would give it the shot it deserves, but again, DON’T call it Third Strike.

Sent from my Gundam. In space. Beefin’.

Jesus fucking christ did Sirlin hire his own Gestapo or something

You clearly didn’t read the article.

Nope, I think you misunderstood the article. He never said that Capcom should’ve released a rebalanced version. (After all, they made the decision based on feedback from the fans.) He’s arguing that the community is at fault for asking for this old game with all of its serious balance issues intact, and I agree with that.

Imagine you’re at a restaurant and you order the same sandwich you’ve been eating for the past 10 years. You fucking love the sandwich, and you love it exactly the way it is. Then one day the chef goes “hey you know what, I’m going to put more salt to balance out the taste” and you go “oh no thank you, I like my sandwich exactly the way it is” and the chef keeps insisting “no, I’m the chef I know better than you do”.

You’re going to feel pretty dumbfounded aren’t you?

That’s how we feel every time someone brings up fucking balancing 3s. Thanks for the offer to make it “better” but it tastes a certain way to us and we like it just how it is.

It’s been proven that at least 50% of 3S players don’t understand what they read but let’s give it a shot:
http://www.sirlin.net/blog/2011/8/25/what-is-a-love-letter-to-the-community.html

Sirlin’s core argument is that the community shouldn’t be unilaterally opposed to rebalancing a game, especially when that game has obvious, serious, fixable problems, and the fact that they are represents a danger to the health of the community as a whole. The only thing you said there that addresses that argument is that a rebalance would necessarily split the community (which isn’t a fact, btw). Then you go on to say that a rebalance would be “cool” and that you’d play it.

So wtf?

Wow. So no one likes SFIV, because that’s the sentiment the vocal minority echoes? Okay, sure.

That analogy doesn’t compare to this current situation. If I don’t like the new sandwich I don’t have to buy it.

I really don’t think fighting games have any similarity to sandwiches, but… why wouldn’t you want to try a new version if you’ve had the same one for 10 years?

How is the community at fault, as they were the ones keeping the game alive in the first place? If it wasn’t for the die-hard community that played 3S and continues to be passionate about it, Capcom would never even consider making 3SO.

In addition to that, the large majority of the community that kept the game alive are the ones that wanted to keep the game as is. Their voices should be heard because if it wasn’t for them, the game would be dead currently and we wouldn’t be having this discussion.

Another related point about community is that Sirlin doesn’t even like or play 3S.

It’s like some random guy on the street criticizing and asking to change competitive skateboarding, when he doesn’t even skateboard, doesn’t like to skateboard, and is unfamiliar with it. Why is Sirlin criticizing a community he has no part of, and dislikes?

I think he meant if it were a Option Similar to how in SSFIV you can switch between Super and AE or a different game
