I saw this over on arcadecontrols and i haven’t seen it here yet. I was shocked because it looks so simple to make. They call it the Vigolix because of the creators nickname and the similarity to the Vewlix cab. I thought this was just too cool not to share this. This is not my project btw.
I just saw this thread today. Thanks for noticing my cabinet! It was about as easy as a cabinet build gets. Although I made it as a machine for my kid to use, it works great as an adult sitdown cabinet! I did very little measuring, and it was a cheap to build project.
Haha, well, I was using arcade parts that were hanging around since this one was designed for my kid. I got my Sanwas saved up for the next project.
As far as cost goes, this is an estimate…I already had a lot on hand, including a used laptop and contols. But here is the the list:
1 sheet 2X4 Plywood : $9.00 (would probably have gone with MDF to avoid sanding, but I had the plywood on hand.)
Wood for cross bars and flat wood dowel for above marquee and in front of Control Panel: $8.00
Spray Paint (Black and red gloss enamel and Acrylic Laquer): $15.00
Vinyl stripping for edge of wood (optional): $5.00
Spray on glue for vinyl stripping: $3.00
13" Flourescent light for Marquee light: $17.00
Cheap powered Speaker Set (hidden under Control Panel): $5.00
ZD Arcade Encoder (I sell these, but they go for $15.00)
Plexi for marquee: $7.00
Artboard for bezel around monitor (will probably switch to plexi though): $3.00
Stencil plastic and paint to make “Vigolix” logo: $4.00
Nuts, bolts, hardware, I’m guessing: $5.00
Laptop…well I used an old laptop I had lying around: Varies
Joystick and buttons…again…stuff I had lying around: Varies
so I would say I minus controls, computer and screen, (Which I had all lying around) I made it in under $100 worth of parts. I could have probably cut more corners as well, if I had wanted to.
You said that it was made for your kid. How does it feel while an adult play it? Good, small, comfortable, does it have the correct weigth to avoid moving it around when mashing the stick and buttons?
I really like it as a sit down. It is very comfortable, but I switched out to use a bit lower of a chair since I was using a higher dining room chair at first. As far as weight goes, all the weight of mine is in the top since I used a laptop, so it was a bit wobbly at first. I put some felt feet on it and put it against the wall, and it is fine now. I guess could also weigh the bottom down instead. DrChek, the guy who made a vertical shmup version of the cab, said he put down a heavy board as the bottom brace on the cabinet and his is pretty stable from doing that. I am sure if I had used a desktop pc and mounted it to the bottom of the cab, it would have been much better. I just had the laptop on hand, though.
