Silver Ring around a PCB Joint?

I was using a solder for the first time today and I had quite a bit of trouble getting some solder off a joint for a Hori EX2 mod… now I’ve got a huge problem…

The silver ring around the joint for my A button has fallen off… now when I apply the solder it merely pools on the extended copper wire pushing through the joint hole rather then around the joint making a connection…

What is this ring and how do I replace/fix it? A ghetto fix is the best way…

Thanks! I’ve been watching the forums for quite a while now heh.

Sounds like you pulled off the trace. You’re going to need to follow it, scratch off anything covering it, then solder to that. If you don’t know how, post up a picture of the pcb and the problem spot. One of us will find it for you =P

thanks! see the two darker green lines leading towards the joint, I take it that those are the traces and so I’ll do what you say!

I’ll wait an hour or so before I actually power it up though since I used isopropyl alcohol to clean the black stuff around the joint.

edit:

I don’t know where I’m supposed to solder to… I followed the trace but it seems to lead to a solder joint from the seperate PCB which is wired to the other buttons… it splits off, but!?

Heres a picture… I zoomed it in so its blurry, but I can get a higher res picture if needed.

Picture needs to be closer. Can’t really make out the traces. =\

In that picture, look at the black ribbon going to the daughterboard for the other four buttons to the left of the main board. Where that connects to the main board, look at the top most wire and connect your little jumper wire there. (that set of wires is labelled ‘CN8_1’ on the board. You’ll see numbers on either side, a 1 and an 8, to indicate the pins; you want pin 8.) That’s the only place to connect to that trace that doesn’t involve a via, so that’s the easiest spot.

Thanks everyone! the 8th pin on CN8_1 worked great! My custom stick is complete!
