Silent Hill Thread

on neogaf it seems like a lot of the ppl who beat the game want to put it above SH2 but cant becoz of the way SH2 has lived up to them after all this time versus SH5 which is brand new.

regardless neogaf is nutting all over this game, whether or not that truly means anything to anybody on a personal level, it definitely makes me wanna put more time into the game since I’ve been hella busy and have barely touched this… I’m only at the
SH5

Spoiler

Hotel in Silent Hill, 1st save point

also dont listen to reports about the game not being scary… for one, SH games were never scary to me except for the very 1st one becoz I was young. The only other scary one to me was Origins coz when I played it I worked all day and lived alone, so the only time I had to play it was during the night… the rest of the games I played whether with my family out and about in the house or living with roommates who would definitely kill the game’s chill potential.

In other words, reviewers are doing their job and reporting their experience based on the circumstances of them playing. If you wait til the late evening all alone to play this game it will have at least a small fright effect on you

I finished it a few days ago. I really enjoyed this game. I’d give it a solid 8.5. Double Helix really pulled it off. I’d love to see another game from them.

Alot of people hatin on the newest Silent hill game, but me and my bro think its pretty fuckin dope.

Homecoming is pretty awesome, after TFU i didn’t think i could be impressed a whole lot by a game, but i was wrong. Im not a big silent hill follower so I had a question.

(lol at all the nurses at fitch’s house. It was like RE’s tofu all over again. I got owned)

Anyways, when the environment starts changing like crazy what is that exactly? Does that only exist in his mind? If yes, how did it scare those order guys at his house?
Also “one more soul to call” is wow!

I actually read a debate on that,

if u played SH2 they make it seem as if the hell world as well as the monsters are specific to you the player. So when you see certain monsters or see other monsters exhibit certain behaviors it is becoz these monsters and behaviors represent your past dirt and are thus exclusive to your experience. This was furthered by the other characters in SH2 and the character development they went thru in the game.

This is where a lot of the beef starts, especially once Pyramid Head was introduced as having a part in Homecomig… SH fans were crying foul saying PH is exclusive to James.

Thus once again this is where fans have a bone to pick with Homecoming. In Homecoming the experiences are not exclusive to the character but appear to be shared by everybody in the environment… everybody goes thru hell mode and everyone’s seeing the same monsters. A lot of fanboys are going crazy and pulling at these hella short strings trying to find ways to justify that all the occurances in the game are indeed happening to Alex exclusively but I think theyre jus being dumb and cant accept what’s going on

I chalk all that up to the devs paying more attention to the movie rather than the games of the past.

They mention the movie in every interview about the game.

yeay the paint peeling shyt I thought was hella cool so I didnt think much about movie influences,

but when I saw those astronauts I was pissed!!!

Do you remember where you read that? sounds interesting.

Which is? Everyone can see/experience hell mode?

Wasn’t everyone in silent hill dead? Including those religous people.

About the debate, each of the games has a different implementation of the Otherwold. SH1 had Alessa’s Otherworld influence the town due to her power. SH2 had the town corrupt the minds of those with dark feelings. This is how James gets his own version of the Otherworld. SH3’s Otherworld came from Claudia and Heather. Homecoming basically has Shepherd’s Glen being cursed by Silent Hill. This is why everyone can see the monsters/fog/etc.

There’s a lot of explanations in the Book of Lost Memories, which can be found translated here:

Gfaqs does have some winners every once and a while.

lol, I went to school with a William Gregory but he’s Black.

Very old bump but now that Shattered Memories is out has anyone else picked it up?

I heard you cannot attack in that game. Is that true?

Yes, it’s true.

Knowing what a huge fan I am of the SH series a friend of mine picked it up for me for my birthday a few days back, and while the game is drastically different from older games I’m still enjoying it for what it is.

It’s true you cannot attack in the game but the only time you encounter monsters is when you go into the town’s “nightmare” world, meaning when you’re in the regular world there’s no threat of attack. This is where you just explore and learn various things about Silent Hill. But back to the nightmare world, you’re basically just supposed to run from point a to point b but some paths aren’t very straight forward. If a monster jumps on you you shake him and you can also knock over objects while running and light emergency flares to keep them at bay.

The little intermissions where Dr. K. administers different psyche tests are kind of neat and change various things throughout the game like character/monster appearance, spoken dialogue, and other small factors.

If you’re really not into the whole Wii motion control thing though I’d suggest to wait for the PS2 version (I think there’s going to be a PSP one as well). Sometimes shaking off enemies will cause you to lose the place of the cursor on screen, thus messing up your direction.

This post was too long. I apologize.

From what ive hear SHSM sucks. Though being a SH fan im still going to get it.

I watched Giant Bomb’s Quick Look of Shattered Memories…looks pretty good. The flashlight is cool, probably the best I’ve seen in any game.

It by no means sucks, it is a completely different game. It’s exactly what they said it is, a reimagination of the first game. I agree about shaking off monsters with the wiimote though, and if you’re say in a forest that can get annoying when they’re off and the camera goes crazy on you. Minute details though, they game so far is very good. I really like the system they have with the phone, it adds a whole new depth to the game.

How do you guys feel about the new “Nightmare” (or as I call it “the crazy”)? It doesn’t feel as creepy as previous games did, but it does give me a different type of scare feeling added with immense panic, which again is very good, just different.

I like it. It’s not creepy in the way that the older games were with disturbing imagery and enemies in the shadows but in a more panicked “holy shit don’t stop running” kind of way.

That being said I prefer the older alternate world but this new ice age isn’t without it’s own charm.

I hated Shatter Memories at first… dont like the controls, map sucks, and nitemare mode sucks.

but I got used to the controls, stopped looking at the maps, and when I got to nitemare mode I jus RUN. Like dont even think about where you’re going, jus RUN.

and then after that, yeay I really liked the game. They definitely took a cool spin on the formula, but it’s still real different and I have heard some orthodox fans on podcasts really not appreciate what the game did.

Hmm, I guess I’ll be hanging onto my PS1 copy of Silent Hill. I’ll pickup Shattered Memories for the PS2 when it hits the bargain bin.
