Attempting spoiler tags, if it doesn’t work I’ll fix it later. It’s heavily hinted that James is in an alternate version of Silent Hill that runs parallel to the normal one, and that the monsters you kill are people. There’s also something you discover about Maria (who isn’t a nurse, btw), but I’m not even putting that in spoiler tags.
SH collection is not worth picking up since they didn’t remake the original and the 3rd in the series is shit, basically your paying 40 just to play silent hill 2 again
I remember this being in the original versions of SH2/3 as well. I would just hold forward/back while the pausing is transitioning to dodge enemies while in combat.
I have played the Xbox version countless times and don’t remember experiencing it even once. Though, maybe my memory is just terrible or I didn’t notice because I would shoot from a distance until knockdown > stomp everything when I wasn’t aiming for high ranks. I’ll test it later.
[details=Spoiler]The monsters you fight are simply manifestations of James’ mind. Essentially, there are 3 parallel dimensions to Silent Hill. The normal one, where it’s just an ordinary town; the foggy one, which serves as a transition into the nightmare one, in which the characters’ ultimate fears and regrets come to life.
For example, you meet a little girl in the game, and it’s always in the normal town, since there’s no reason why an innocent little girl would have a guilty conscience, which triggers the whole nightmare thing.[/details]
You don’t know! You weren’t there!! I’m telling you: the damn mannequin came at me and tried to shank me! That shit ain’t right! And I think it said something bad about me being black…
Besides, it’s basically the only thing that makes sense given the context of most of the games:
[details=Spoiler]About the nightmare version of Silent Hill, each person has their own unique version of it. In SH2, you meet a woman going through her own adventure through Silent Hill. In the cutscene where she dies, you suddenly see the surrounding area engulfed in flames, when there was no indication of a fire breaking out previously. This is because, during her last moments, you were able to take a glimpse into what her nightmare Silent Hill looked like, which was constantly covered by flames. Whenever you met her previously, she was talking to you while seeing flames everywhere.
It also explains why the little girl never encounters a monster even once. She always appears whenever things look “normal.” That’s because, to her, Silent Hill is just a normal town where she was born and raised.
Actually, Silent Hill really is a normal town to most people. It only “activates” whenever someone is going through extreme mental trauma, to make people physically confront their demons.
To prove this further, all enemies in the games are symbolic of the characters’ guilt. That’s why the enemies take on such weird… positions, sometimes.[/details]
Alternative dimensions were never canon. It’s all fanon. Many things within SH1 pretty much state that is not the case. The spiritual power that dominates the town is manifesting their nightmares into the real world.
If that’s the case, then where are all the townspeople? No, the monsters you fight are not actually normal people. That was simply a joke brought up by a guy in SH3.
Also, to many surreal things happen in the SH games for it to happen in the real world. Neverending staircases, the transition from foggy SH to nightmare SH, the many pitfalls surrounding the town, etc.
Yes, the nightmares are “real,” as in they can physically harm your character, but they do not exist in the normal world. Like I said before, Silent Hill is just a regular lakeside town to most people.
Lisa had a rather clumsy explanation for what happened to the townspeople but I couldn’t get anything out of it. Have you seen the movie Phantoms? It’s one of the series influences and provides the best possible explanation to what happened to the residents.
[details=Spoiler]Lisa got pulled into Silent Hill’s twisted world because of her connection to Alessa. That’s why she suddenly found herself alone in the nightmare Silent Hill.
Incidentally, the nightmare version of Silent Hill you encounter throughout the whole first game is that of Alessa’s, not Harry’s. That’s because Harry has nothing to be guilty of; he’s just a father trying to find his daughter. But because of his connection to Cheryl, he experiences the same nightmares Alessa does.[/details]
In case you’re wondering, Silent Hill is indeed confirmed to be a normal town that is a popular tourist location because of the lake. Heck, there is a lot of evidence pointing to the town still being bustling about, such as Harry taking his daughter there in SH1 (why would he take her to an abandoned town?), the newspaper article detailing the recent murder of two children in the suburbs (ties into SH4), the fact that characters who are not affected by the town do not see anything strange about it, etc.
I mean, if something did indeed happen to the townsfolk, then Laura would have surely said something to that effect, right? Something like “I haven’t seen a real person in ages!” or something like that. Instead, she treats James just as any other stranger when she first meets him.
