The counter-argument here is, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” And if Capcom tries to fix-it, by changing the formula of SF, believe me, more people will upset than grateful.

Umm… I’m not agreeing on how the thread creator said his opinion but I think his approach was a little misplaced, why not have this…MAYBE (if they’re willing to fly) Namco, Capcom, Sammy, and SNK could come over to EVO next year and pulll out a survey there to us “HARDCORE gamers.”
It would be the same survey they would give to japan as well though. If it does work they could probably hit up all the other HARDCORE fighting scenes across the world. I doubt they’d be willing to do that though just because Japan gives the big 4 companies more money the rest of us HARDCORE fighting gamers do out there in the world.
That’s my 2 cents and yes, I know y’all won’t give a shit about this post, but consider the idea in it.

Anyway… everything will always be made to appeal to the masses, even if that means its mindless or redundant. Because usually you can’t make enough money by appealing to the select few… or atleast not nearly as much.
Music industry works like this. Hollywood too, although notably there are A-list actors who spend their own money to get films made, because they feel so strongly about its subject matter… like George Clooney w/ Syriana. They usually have to go independent because major studios won’t back something that will likely provide such little return.
Online this, online that. Geeze find some friends that aren’t screen names for god’s sake.
As for your actual point, yeah you got a point. but it’s hard for people to try out new fighters because of the obscurity of fighting games that dont have Capcom/Snk/Sammy/ or Namco as the company (oh and Midway for MK too I guess). Sunsoft is a damn good innovator when it came to fighting games, but alas they never got anywhere because people we’re still popping Quarters in the new rehash of SF2. Evoga should win some awards for Rage of the Dragons and Matrimelee (DEFINETLY matrimelee) but alas the neogeo…well you know.
We need to move on, but people just wont, because as far as mainstream goes, the fighting genre is weak compared to the next Halo/GTA clone.

Whenever you introduce one of your friend’s to fighting games or whatever (maybe you too have experienced this yourself), you eventually start picking into all the fights you missed.
Ohh, Darkstalkers. KOF. Last Blade. Rumble Fish. Matrimelee. Daraku Tenshi. Wow, this is great. More! Waku Waku 7, Tekken, VF, SC, etc. etc.
Then, sooner or later, you’ve basically played all the fighting games as much as you care to, and no new ones are being made. Then you start asking questions like the OP.
So beside the “this is my forum” thing I can see everybody rightfully flaming you for, I can appreciate where you’re coming from, but not truly agree with it.
