ShugenDo...THE Mugen Replacement?

It’s funny how Mugen is looked down upon by the hardcore fighting community. Actually, I find it funny whenever anything about the fighting genre other than high level play is prioritized by anyone in anyway because people on SRK are going to think it’s absolute rubbish. Plot, character development/design? Shut that shit up, I’d play a game where the story is that 15 texture-less 3D figures go into a basement and fight, 01101 is top tier. Mugen? What the fuck is that, the result of a fighting game lover’s hard work and determination that allows fans of the genre to satisfy creative urges as well as plain old have FUN? It’s not tournament-worthy so I don’t give a shit about it. Online? Lag messes up execution and punishment timing so it’s not tournament-worthy thus I don’t want fighting games to have it even though I could still play it offline and online would increase the fanbase(more ppl buying fighters).

EDIT: And I agree with Shade’s above post.

Seriously couldnt have said that any better. You’ve stated what was on my mind for about 3 years, now.

On a semi-related note, this is why I love the current Doujin-soft scene. Games like BLITZsdjkshdk whatever, Melty Blood, and BIG BANG BEAT keep the genre fresh, in an otherwise stale-ass environment. I love(d) games like MvC2, but dammit, I want someone new. Since Capcom likes to drop nothing but shit (Evolution/Jam) and rehases (SF2 and Alpha 3 on everything), theres not many places to turn. MUGEN is one of the last avenues left for something “new” in the fighting game scene.

except its not new at all because most of the characters are shitty low-quality rips from other games

You dont even know what you’re talking about, which is now very apparent. “Low Quality rips”? Bitch please. 99 percent of the converted characters are DIRECT rips from the ARCADE versions of their respected games. DIRECT.

Just stop, please. You’re an obvious dumbass, whom I’m guessing was denied his precious MOOGEN REQUESTS at some forum, and then bitched about how much it “sucked” after that.

What? No one would send you EVIL KENZ?

Like I said, I don’t look down on Mugen. I am just really disappointed with what people have done with it so far.

I support it – hell, blip and I made sure the mugen community had access to all the perfect GG #R sprites they wanted. I just don’t care about it, and I think every mugen build that’s been made with it so far has been a waste of time and effort.

I have yet to run across a decent mugen build.

What do you mean by “stuff”?

Like, code or sprites or backgrounds?

very true. Maybe they could have a pre packaged set one, that most people agree to be balanced and good, then people could download the same package and use it to play online. man that would rock.

And we thank you for that. Shade/Shin Kairi <3’s you.

The thing is, theres like, thousands of “creators”, whom only really make on average, 3 characters, and some stages, or the few who focus almost exclusively on stage making, etc. You guys make it sound as if theres like, a shit load of people whom make ENTIRE games. That’s not how it is.

I mean, Reu made what, 3 characters, 2 Evil versions and an antirely original release, and the whole MUGEN community gets shitted on for that? And lets not forget ONE of his Evil characters PREDATES any that were official, and teh character in itself is a piece of art, spritewise (I should know, I contributed some to the project personaly).

I unno. I just think we all need to just put up, or shut up (no offense to you anyone, as I could possibly be just as guilty as the next guy in some cases).

If we want an awesome, “Original” masterpiece, get to it. Dont belitttle the next guy because he’s working with already used material. Some of these guys may just be practicing for bigger fish, ya know?

you cant just “generate” sprites for characters no matter what program you use. you want to make a mugen original char you have to draw it frame for frame just like a real game, there is no getting around this no matter what engine you use.

Re-read what I said, Shodokan. Code, programming, not sprites. I’m a sprite artist, and I know damn well you can “generate” sprites.

An interesting way to deal with that would be a P2P inside of the mugen. If two players connect, the program checks for content the other player doesn’t have. For example, if I have Evil Ken but not Evil Ryu and the opposite is true for the player I’m connected two then I will download Evil Ryu from him and he downloads Evil Ken from me.

ROFLMAO!

Rosie O’Donnel vs. Killer Whales

I think it would be awesome if the whole of SRK got together and used this.

I mean, in principal, we’ve got all the stuff to make it work. All of the arty inclined people make the initial sprites for the games (easily the bulk of the hard work I know), other, perhaps non arty inclined people to go through all these sprites re colouring them to make up the required number of palette swaps. A bunch of like minded people to code that shit, and everyone and their uncle to test it/balance it.

Goddamn, we have the POWER of a HUGE community and nothing has gone down yet? For shame.

Appreciates that he hasn’t actually done anything towards this sort of thing yet either

Now that I think about it, Hitler could be possible to create. CvS2 Bison color edit. Give him caucasian skin. Black pixel on his upper lip. Crop out the attacking arm of st.LP and point it upward at an angle and remove the psycho power to make the zieg heil pose. Put a podium in front of him and have him do paint the fence without psycho power and there you have him doing one of those angry speeches he did.

I’m more interested in InfinityCat, myself.

Shade, the coding aspect of Mugen is actually pretty simple once you get down to it. Of course, depending on how complex you want to go, it can vary, but putting together something, say, SSF2T-level is pretty easy once you know the basics of the code.

One of the big things I’m looking forward to in InfCat is the expanded stage coding. I know from experience how limited Mugen’s stage coding is, and InfCat looks to greatly expand upon it and let you do code with a stage pretty much anything you could code with a character. This means things like breakable objects ala SF2, changes between rounds, etc.

In addition, lots of little useful things are being added to fill in gaps in the original Mugen’s abilities; things like AI detection triggers (in the past, trying to detect whether a character was being controlled by the computer or a human player could only be done in a very roundabout way which, if not done properly, would lead to strange things like a character you’re playing starting to act on thier own), Root variable contollers (the original Mugen had ParentVarSet and ParentVarAdd contorllers, but no RootVarSet or RootVarAdd controllers), controllers for playing back music (so you can do mid-round music changes, etc.).

I hear ya. I’m only pretty wizzy at Stages, and even that I stumble on more often than not. I have a few stages uploaded at RandomSelect I believe. Just look for “Kairi + Hoshi”. We work magic together, yo.

im talking about how the characters play you retard

it will never happen because people on the internet are incapable of getting anything done. have you ever seen threads here where someone says theyre making a game? you get one guy AT MOST who can program, 5 people submitting shitty “concept art”, some anime faggot writing a terrible “story”, and about 50 people saying “well i cant contribute anything but when youre finished i can playtest”

Then learn to use the proper terms then, shit-bricks.

infinitycat looks cool

i always wanted to waste a portion of my life working on a simple fighter

Characters and stages. Always insane hard to find shit for mugen.

There are many that play just fine. And even if you don’t like the way they play, that doesnt mean the engine is incapable of handling a character that plays the way you want them to.

That’s why I’m waiting until I get some progress done before I start my thread. :razzy: (For the record, I can code (as far as Mugen goes), I can do the necessary art for sprites and stages, I can do music and sound, and story doesn’t matter, so aside from playtesting (which I’ll be looking to SRK for), it’ll pretty much be a one-person project. Lots more work that way, but more consistent and reliable.)
