Money coming in on Friday night. Just got off the phone with john will pass the money out to houston peepz on friday.
I read through some of the threads created by the anime people in the http://www.mashharder.com/forums, even tho they are disappointed as well on how the con was ran. They are saying that the con was more towards the gamers.
Im pretty sure Javi didnt have much to do with Showdown Championships if anything at all. If I remember correctly TS5 was his last major contribution to TS because he was getting married and had to move on with life. He stated it somewhere here on SRK.

Flakey arcade with bunk as prices…busted up as tourny…and they host the worst con ever in history…no door prizes as advertised…cash prizes weren’t dealt with…Emo dood takes off and leaves Ranma hanging to take the heat…it’s now wed and no responses.
This leads me to believe several things.
- Emo doesn’t care about the SF scene…already a known fact.
- Aside from Ranma, nobody had the slightest clue how to run a tourny…let alone con.
- False advertisement.
I don’t understand the lack of human rationality here. Why would the host just drop like a hat and leave his event? That doesn’t make any sense. It’s not professional, it’s disrespectful to con goers and tourny players, which in fact, he doesn’t care about. I’m wondering what “explanation” he plans on feeding his tools this time.
Stepping out of the box, can’t you people see what’s going on here now? Sit down, and think about this.
there were only 5 showdowns as far as im cocerned
I agree.
And that understaffed stuff is bullshit.
I leave all that up to not planning well. I mean when we do our events at work, we plan for events a year in advance. We host events that generate 500 people with a staff of only 10, plus a couple volunteers. And why does it work? PLANNING. If you know the con is going to draw A LOT of people, why not start planning, in detail, AT LEAST a year in advance?
Things ran shitty because lack of planning, direction, and leadership.
Half the “volunteers” knew jack shit about what was going on. Did they not debrief? Were they all not given written assignments? I mean, I’d seriously love to be a fly on the wall and see how all of this “planning” was going on.
I also went on Thursday to register early. I got there at 6:30pm. Hung around for awhile. The registration didn’t even start getting set up until about 7:30 - 8. And when they were finally set up, they didn’t have all the equipment they needed. I ended up staying there until 9:30 - 10 pm if not later. All to get a friggin badge!
I feel sorry for people that went Friday morning, because I KNOW they were there longer than I was. I saw the line. I almost cried.
I blame Chris for non of this. He saw great potential in this, and honeslty, there was. If only it didn’t cater to the people it didn’t need to cater to. The publicity was there, the audience wasn’t.
All I have to say is, TX5:Best.Showdown.Ever. AND it didn’t have any of the trimmings this event had.
Two thumbs down for this event… and one middle finger up.
John said the event got 4900 people on mashharder.com. So 3000 for the con and 1900 for showdown?
I blame Chris for everything that has happened, Planet-Zero provides shit and Chris just gobbles it up every single time. Way to destroy 6 years of hard work in a weekend, thank god organizers for other majors haven’t lost their mind yet.
I don’t. Why? How else was he going to fund such a large event. Don’t get me wrong, I too am disappointed with the way things have gone and where it is now. I mean, let’s think realistically here. Instead of bashing Chris publicly, why don’t you just fork over about 5k to run a successful tourny? Again, I’m not trying to bust your chops, but what other alternative did he have? It was planned, but the staff chosen to run this event were totally clueless.
Showdown 6 did not require 5k and was 10 tvs away from being a good tournament.
This event was doomed once Chris conceded control of the showdown brand to John.
Emotiongear has no idea how to run a real tournament, he is not even a gamer to begin with.
There are many tournaments around the country running on a budget and yet still manage to provide quality entertainment: Final Round, Trashday, NEC…etc.
Players will always go to good/mediocre events, but rest assured they will never come back to the fiasco that took place this past weekend. I provided housing to many out of towners for showdown and I’ve never been ashamed until now to be associated with the Texas fighting game community.
If you haven’t noticed, showdown has turned into the laughing stock of SRK. And guess who we have to thank for that?
You just reiterated what I said. I agree, this past weekend was an atrocity. There’s no denying that. Emotiongear and friends don’t care about the SF community and have a group of idiots who know nothing about running a tourny run the tourny. GGPO
Ashamed? That’s a strong choice of words there bro. I’m not ashamed but more so disappointed. But honestly, I can’t say much granted I’ve been streaky in the last few years. My point is, instead of taking shots at him for whatever reason, we should try to figure out a way to mend this situation and the scene. Put any personal vendetta shit and piece this community back together. On the flip side, if you don’t care about the Texas SF scene, then ignore this post.
God, sometimes I miss chris wong and his stargate arcade
I remember meeting him on planet zero last regionals
he is a cool guy, he should help running the tournaments as well
Who allowed emotiongear to take over this event? How many times have PZ promised and not delivered? These are all indications of bs. Me and hitler figured this out in november already, yet people still eat shit when pz feeds it to them.
Of course I am ashamed. People paid hundreds of dollars to come to an event that greatly fell short of what was promised, in our own backyard! The reason why I am so harsh with my words is because there will be no mending of any sorts. It takes years to build up a good event and all the out of towners I spoke with said they won’t be coming back.
Edit - The japanese all thought this event was terrible, they were just too polite to say anything. There I said it for them.
I feel it is not about not caring about the community but its more like what can u do about it. I wouldnt mind volunteering or helping out but dont really think that they would want me or some of the ppz on the southeast. I have 2 blame Chris for some of the stuff that happened. He told me on Monday that he would talk to John and try to get me my money. I called him repeatedly to get my money no answer yesterday or today. I talked to John said he would work with us to have our money early Friday. Not even the point though. The point is we can have a good showdown but in order for that to happen we have to all come 2gether and help out. 2 get a good showdown we would have to have a good location even if it is with an anime con. And a good pr person to help put this event behind us. It would need to be someone well respected. I dont feel like ranmas word means much to most ppl cause they know he has no control over the event.
I’m just glad I sat this tournament out. Trashday 3 will be much more fun and more accommodating to everyone’s school and work schedules. 2 PM on a Friday is just unacceptable.
big chris, did that guy say why they couldn’t pay the money on sunday?
I miss the old showdowns ;(
I felt ashamed to be associated to Showdown, and I didn’t even go to it! We were once known as one of the best majors, rivaling even Evo (TS5 imo) at one point. Now it’s nothing more than an anime con tourny that could’ve been run better by the SNK crew (I win a lot of free shit from them =D). It’s pretty sad when I had to apologize to the out of state players for the tourny. As far as I’m concerned, the hardcore fgc in houston is done.
I hate to admit it, but I also blame Ranma for this fiasco. Sugarland already covered why.
I was not suprised at how Showdown turned out. Through the past Showdown planning meetings to the way PZ John has handled past conflicts, I knew it was gonna be a disaster. I gave warning about this tourny months before it went down. It’s a shame people still bought it Anime Matsura’s empty hype.
Oh and PZ John doesn’t care about the players period, INCLUDING the japs. He pretty much used them to get advertising of his arcade in Arcadia magazine. This was very apparent when he pretty much dumped all 10 japanese players in a motel after the tournament after having them stay at the Hilton hotel where the convention was held. Quite a downgrade and without warning. I heard they were left with nothing but McDonald’s food. No consoles, no entertainment, nothing. Then the next day he dumps them off at the mall with a few locals. We had to keep them entertained! The guy who invited them, PZ John, was nowhere to be seen. Make no mistake, PZ doesn’t care about anyone except their business.
Vinny: The only way we could mend this scene is to take PZ outta the picture. Drama and politics arose ever since they came onto the scene. I don’t care if they are the only arcade houston has left, I am never dealing with their bs again.

Why blame Ranma? he is just a scape goat for what he feels are his friends. It’s not like he was really intending on flushing all his hard work down the drain or anything.
If anyone’s to blame it’s probably Jon with his false advertising and poor ability to do anything correctly. I didn’t go because I thought having to take a Friday and probably Thursday off for a tourney is ridiculous. That and it was going to be hella expensive. I still think Chris is a good guy, just a scape goat. And knowing Chris he will just try and take it in good stride because he doesn’t seem like a person concerned about self image.
This exactly what I said.
Lay: I understand your standpoint. I’m just trying to direct you to the root of the problem. Ranma put a lot of work into the SF scene. In reality, he tried to do what was best for the community eventhough many were skeptical about it. Including you and I. Lashing out at Ranma doesn’t solve anything. At least he tried. If your going to present a problem, offer a solution.
David: I agree, PZ needs to be taken out of the picture for good. They have done more harm than good.
