I can’t do the juice kick aka rainbow tatsu very consistently, but I think all versions of it (Short, Forward, Roundhouse) have EXACTLY the same range, arc and height. It actually seems to be pretty useful as I’ve played some ppl that can do it consistently, especially as the 1st move in a round vs non-Shoryuken chars.
From trying it out in practice mode, I think the range for the different strength juice kicks is different, but only a little bit. I think the difference between a short and roundhouse juice kick is only a few steps.
Do you have a stick yet? If so, have you found it easier or worse than using a pad for juice kicks?
I’m still on a pad too. The characters that I wish I had a stick for are any grapplers, and anyone with a throw you can mash for extra damage (Ken being one of them).
How much better do you think your game would be on a stick? I think my game would go through the roof. Reversal Shoryus would be near a 100% instead of the 60% on pad. I have a hard time against Zangief, especially tick>SPDs, and having used Zangief for the past 2 days, I realize that there is a pause between the tick and the SPD.
eg. st.Short>pause(maybe 1/5th of a second)>SPD. That little pause is plenty of time for a reversal Shoryu, especially a first frame hitter like Ken’s Fierce. Zangief players have to pause to wait for the opponent to come out of block stun, otherwise the SPD would whiff if they did it too soon. Same thing for all the other ticks, st.Forward, cr.Jab, etc.
As it is right now, my reversal Shoryus are about 10% against tick>SPDs, but against other meaty attacks it’s 60%, however with a stick, I think that would jump to 50% and damn near 100% respectively (offline of course).
Not to mention being able to improve my reversal throws, learning the juice kick and using grapplers as well as other chars.
Well yeah the part of my game that suffers the most is the throw game. For example Ryu has four throw buttons, if I piano’ed those buttons when I was attempting a tick throw on a stick I’d succeed far more often than on the pad. Piano’ing reversals is a heck of a lot better on a stick too.
I thank Sirlin for making the inputs easier for pad players, but ST is still a game that was always meant to be played on a stick.
I preordered the SF4 stick. I’ll have to wait until then.
I ordered the Hori Fighting Stick 3 and paid about $60 US. I was planning to get a cheap stick first, just to play around, and then save up for the Madcatz SFIV stick coming in February. But as it turned out, the Madcatz will prolly be released before my Hori arrives. = )
I ordered the HRAP3 from Amazon for $90. It’s supposed to arrive on Wednesday. I’ll get Sanwa buttons soon. I’m gonna suck pretty bad on it though. I have almost no experience with sticks. I’ll probably bust out Strees Fighter EX Plus Alpha expert training mode to help sharpen my execution when I get it (and find some free time).
Tatsu into a knee bash is a beautiful thing. This is my favorite tactic right now. Better players can stop it but it can be quite a surprise, and it pisses people off with hilarious results. It’s nice to hit the knee when crossing up with a forward Tatsu, and mixing it in when I have someone in the corner can be devastating.
When you get your Sanwas, you gonna be manually installing them youself? I’m not a very technical guy, and have no idea how a stick works. I just know how to use it, and pound on it. = )
BTW, using EX to get familiar with your new stick is a great idea. I love the expert training mode, and if you’re a SF fan who wants to judge execution level, I recommend SFEX just for the training mode. Good stuff.
blitzfu,
Putting the Sanwa buttons is supposedly very easy. They’re snap-on buttons (which leads me to believe that no soldering is involved). I have the impression that all you have to do is unscrew the box to open it up, then take out the old buttons somehow (all I hear is that removing them is “obvious”), and then snapping in the new buttons. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Coth_X,
Do you have a PS3 or 360? For either console, the SF4 Tournament Edition stick is the one to get. Perfect arcade quality right out of the box. Only problem is it doesn’t come out til late February I think.
For PS3, the HRAP3 (what I ordered) is a good stick. It has a Sanwa joystick (what Japanese arcades have) and the buttons are supposedly easy to replace with Sanwa buttons. So getting a legit arcade stick is easy to do with the HRAP3 and you can have it before the SF4 stick comes out.
I’m a complete noob when it comes to sticks though. I regurgitated that info from the “Tech Talk” forum.
Yeah, I visited the Tech forum a lot when deciding which stick to get, but there was barely any response to my questions, so I figured there weren’t a lot of frequent visitors, or they were rude. Either way, I would still have a hard time with screwing around with the insides of anything electronic, so I avoid it as much as I can.
But downRuply, if you can get a pic of your stick and post it once you get it, that would be awesome.
Thanks for the info. At the time, my question couldn’t be answered by the tech forums. I wanted to know whether the arcades in my region used to use loose sticks or tight sticks (they’re no longer around). I didn’t know then that there were regional forums, or I would have posted my question there. But still, I did PM a couple of ppl in my region, but they couldn’t answer my question either. So, when I ordered my stick, I figured I’d get the cheaper Hori first, and if it wasn’t right, get the more expensive Sanwa later.
Well, my stick finally arrived, and boy was I wrong!! Horis are definitely WAY too loose for me. I can barely do Hadokens (4/5 times), and Shoryukens are almost impossible (2/5 times). Still better than a pad though, cuz I will get used to it and get better at it. Definitely gonna get a Sanwa stick though.
Aside from the loose stick, I thought I would have an easier time getting back into stick after almost 10 years on a pad (6 years on stick before that). But it’s harder than I thought, I find myself wanting to go back to pad. If the Sanwa doesn’t work out for me either though, I might have to get myself a 6 face button pad.
I know this is the Ken thread, and that this should be posted in the tech forums, so if anybody has any more stick comments, let’s take it to the tech forums.
Just to clarify Coth, the stick I got was the Hori Fighting Stick 3 for the PS3. I don’t know what type of stick the Madcatz SFIV uses, I’m still researching, but I think it’s a Sanwa. After doing some more research, I think Sanwa will still be too loose for me. I think an American stick, like a Happ or Mas, would be better for me. If you haven’t already done so, I would suggest checking out the tech forums.
