If you like P3/P4’s Once More system, you might want to check out SMT: Nocturne or the Digital Devil Saga games. They have a more defensive version of that battle system.
Nocturne - demon collection ala Pokemon, after the apocalypse story
DDS 1 and 2 - permanent party members that can swap skills in and out, world in a constant state of war
Note that the games all have dungeons that can get lengthy, but not at the start of the game. They’re also not randomised like P3/P4 and are handcrafted, which also includes tricks, traps, etc - but those only come mid to late game, and aren’t too overboard with it, unlike Strange Journey and its fucking sector E.
I think P5 theme is being restricted and trying to break free. You right that P3 theme was death, and P4 was truth. But if I remember 5 has somethin to do with breaking free
I 2nd Darkstalker on going straight to Digital Devil if you on finished P3/4. DDS just feels like a more strategic persona. And I emphasize strategic because foreal sometimes even in a random battle a simple mistake can get you a game over lol
short vid i made awhile back covering themes in P3 to P5 , you might learn something new and maybe you won’t.
putting it up here anyway.

P4 over did the cheeriness considering the plot was about solving serial murders it made me really unable to take anything about it seriously because it didn’t even seem to take itself seriously. even the revelations each character had wasn’t that big of a deal. i finally tapped out after i saw Yusuke trigger his shadow with petty bullshit after seeing multiple examples of how it kept producing powerful enemies. sure Junpei may have gotten in some bad situations and had to bailed out, but at least he never created the dam boss himself.
anyhow regarding SMT4 i finally got past the Minotaur after taunting him and getting super fucking lucky. i then went down a bit saw all the actuall cool shit in the game cause fuck Mikado and then got one shotted by fucking Medusa. im really not getting to Apocalypse anytime soon at this rate.
Edit: i updated the OP with an English sub of the Persona 5 trailer
well that may not actually be the case now that i think about it. for a japanese game to come to E3 that would suggest that they have something to tell the English speakers. initially i assumed they had nothing to say to us, but they most likely just didn’t bother since it would be redundant and not the best way to share info with us. afterall why would you reveal english voice actors during a japanese stream? or reveal a western release date when a lot probably weren’t watching that would get mixed up with japanese pre-orders.
Nyx was…really not that great. as i boss fight he’s pretty poorly designed. you never really had to change your tactics to beat him and fighting all the arcanas isn’t difficult just time consuming. once you get to his true form just lame it out, and past that just lame it out even further. the only time my party members really died was when Ken for some fucking reason kept Ziodyning the giant reflecting barrier which kept killing him. Aigis would immediately cast samarecarm on him, but it was still annoying watching the AI constantly kill themselves. at no point was anybody ever really in danger. Once i got Odin i pretty much won and everything else was just formalities basically.
i unfortunately was spoiled on the ending ages ago, same with P4 so that didn’t really have much impact though there were some moments. i can kind of see why @NeloVergil ships Aigis so hard now though, that was a pretty touching scene ill admit. overall my favorite part would probably just be ending theme the remix of that i found particularly beautiful.
im not getting to P4 anytime soon. i need to get a vita TV and wait for it to go on sell again, and im too broke for either at the moment. Oh well it’ll give me a nice cool down period in the meantime. as for the Answer…probably not? im kind of just happy to be done with this style of gameplay for awhile and from what i hear the Answer can actully make the experience retroactively worse.
I’m really curious how far they go with the stealth mechanics, and if the dungeons will have multiple branching paths, or routes to take.
I still need to finish P3, P4, and DDS, I got spoiled on the endings and killed most the motivation to play them. Going to try and knock out DDS during this break between semesters, but also got a few projects I need to do before Summer Semester.
Dude just play the answer, some people say its worse I on the other hand think its ok. Just know that it’ll be complete BS in regards to some enemies especially if your coming off easy/normal. Also, the answer is the main reason I ship Aigis.
Oh, and it’ll be more grindy and less RPG because the whole purpose is to answer the ending of the journey. Not to mention it sets up some stuff you’ll see later so it’s canon. It should take half the time to beat the answer (based off my time) unless you get pissed at certain boss(es). It also gives some insight on personas and what they are which gets used in P4 as well soooo yeah play the answer and ignore niggas saying it actively makes everything worse get your own opinion on it then look up what fools say.
Listen dude I’m just taking every escuse I can get to stop. ever since I beat that last floor boss the game honestly stopped being fun. even once I decided to stop grinding it was then just 20 days of social links. Persona 3 was a balance of brutal dungeon crawling then after a hard night of that I would enjoy that week of straight nothing, but towards the end that dungeon never got difficult enough to make me enjoy taking a break so it was just this long drawn out thing.
I get that the Answer probably fixes a lot of that, but my experience with P3 has just left a sour taste in my mouth. once that goes away we’ll see.
Nyx is one of the few bosses in JRPGs that will make you feel like “i might not be able to pull this off” , especially towards the end of the fight.
It’s not just a challenging fight , but a heartpounding one too. Combine that with the music and you have a bossfight for the historybooks.
the game doesn’t “expect” anything. It’s optional for those who want to go the extra mile.
If i remember it right i reached endgame being lvl 60’ish something.
Should note that last time i played P3 it was P3P. So IDK if there are any rebalancing differences between OG p3 and p3p.
