Like the previous posters acknowledged, Capcom expected CE Mode would have legs to stand on by incorporating this point system. Arguably, this has created an addiction as many players continue to grind through the circuits in the hopes of reaching G1/SG status.
Sadly the frequency of players isn’t nearly as high as when CE Mode made its debut. I continue playing because it’s helped me locate comp of equal/greater skill; allowing me to just enjoy private matches instead of one-time sessions.
Honestly, hitting G1 no longer feels like a proud achievement to me. Honestly anyone that’s halfway decent can reach G1. They just have to grind and get wins (dedicated G2 players are starting to creep in the circuit now while longtime members of G1 are gradually making their way further into G1-B/A… before long, more of them will be in SG. There should be more strict requirements (and penalties) to help distinguish the truly skilled players amongst those “scrubbing” their way to the top. Like many players, I just see it as a great avenue to practice different matchups/skill levels – CE Mode shouldn’t be taken so seriously whether people feel it’s broken (or not).
How long will it be before some people realise GP is based on time played, and not anything else. I’ve played terrible guys who were well over 60k and they were just garbage. There are a few gems in there, but more than 60% of the dudes with a shitload of GP just play the game like their life depends on it. The only reason I keep playing it from time-to-time is to keep myself sharp, and try out new stuff I’ve learned about match-ups.
Even that is getting stale though, cuz you only ever seem to see Ryu/Akuma/Sagat in G1.
i agree that it shouldn’t be taken so seriously. however, based on the tier’d grading system and disconnect ratios, i would argue that it seems as though capcom wanted or expected it to be. so criticism (and of course plenty of whinging ) should be expected.
anecdote time:
i’m sitting on maybe 19k gp. i don’t play as often as i did back in say, june or july, and it seems like every time i go on the average level of competition goes down. from shotos that wakeup srk 9/10 times to blankas that ball after i’ve dizzied them from punishing balls. it’s all caught up to G1. and some of these people have more gp than me. frankly, it’s bullshit. i’m not getting any better or learning anything new.
the sad thing is, you’d think with the amount of time these people put in they’d actually get pretty good at the game.
Instead you have people with 50-60k that still stick to random ultras, wake up srk and thinking they can tick throw their way to SG.
For me personally, I play to get better (granted it’s for no reason because I have no desire to enter tournies) and if I get spanked by someone that’s using a particular tactic that I don’t have an answer for I do what I can to learn so I don’t get caught the next time I play.
complain complain complain… yeesh go play mario and complain about not jumping higher too.
if shotos and sagat were removed. people would complain about bisons stomp or dhalsims fire and teleport. ( ive read complains about it too so nvm ) If srks were removed everybody complain about cr. lp or lk. on wake up. :crybaby:
For those who don’t know, the BP system for arcade SFIV gives points for winning but takes points for losing.
Even with that, is BP a good indicator of skill? No. 10,000BP would be considered “scrub” status, yet there are plenty of really good players who are only in the 10,000’s just because they constantly play against the monsters of the game and don’t get to win that much.
The arcade also has its own form of ragequitting - people who have a card but intentionally don’t use it for fear of losing points.
Some people will also go to arcades where the comp level is low, just to level up. At the last a-cho tournament, we saw Kindevu using a card that wasn’t his - presumably to help level up whoever’s card that was.
Moral of the story - no system is perfect, and whatever flaws there are people will find ways to exploit it. Hate the players, not the game.
Well at least on CM (G1 specifically) you get a few good fights every now and then, but for ranked or player matches the situation is way different, yesterday I played for an hour or so of ranked matches (cause now that I’m on SG I’m unable to find matches on CM) and I only got a bunch of really boring fights and performed a lot of perfects, not a single interesting or challenging match and I’m not saying that I’m a pro or anything but sure I’m not that bad either hehe
I dunno why so many SRKers can’t grasp the concept that there is no local scene in 99% of the United States and most people aren’t willing to drive hours away for “local” tournaments
I’m only like G2-E or something…shrug…I dont’ think I’ve done a champion match in like 3 months now lol. Just didn’t see the point (plus I hate playing as my main all the time), so I just do player matches. Its not like being high ranking means anything shrug.
Maybe I’ll hop on and push my way to G1 status, but I just dont feel like PLAYINg that much…shrug
grinding to g1 teaches you really terrible habits that are hard to shake against good competition since it requires hundreds of matches vs shitty players. they really should just bump you up after a certain # of consecutive wins or once you get to a certain win ratio in the grade you’re in and bump you back down if you aren’t winning. If you win 5 tourneys in a row you shouldn’t have to keep grinding for hundreds or thousands of matches, it doesn’t do anyone a damn bit of good, and if you can’t ever get past the 2nd round in G2-G1 you aren’t learning anything and don’t need to be wasting peoples’ time
The best players I have ever encountered on G1 are not as good as the local players down here in Pittsburgh. Unless you literally live in the middle of nowhere, you are much better served just using G1 as practice for your local scene.
SG is beyond pointless. You would have to grind like a mad man and when you get there, you really expect it to be better players? No it’ll be fellow grinders with bad habits.
Good players are not grinding all day online they are playing locally/regionally.
