SFxT General Discussion #4 - Witty title

These posts are awesome. Well, the guys who ACTUALLY contributed to something.

For me, I lose to those who are points ahead of me. IE grand masters and A+s. (I’m only an A rank). I lose a LOT to unfamiliar Tekken characters such as Ogre and Bob, as very few European players use them. Then you get bodied by one and end up being salty for the whole night. I’m also cycling through so many characters apart from Ryu, who I’ve mained since SF4. And it clearly shows in my play, as I’m less confident with every other character I pick, even with with EWGFs down to a tee. I also lose as I love to SRK A LOT. I really do mean that. Granted, SRK is great for punishing moves which are -3 and above. But sometimes, I get the spacing wrong, or I miss the reversal timing, and that will make me lose the game. I also lack match up knowledge against much of the cast, as so many characters are underrepresented. Which is a damn shame, really. I have this really bad character crisis too, which doesn’t help at all. Especially when I’ve played almost every zoner, yet I’m not comfortable enough to main any of them. (Beside Ryu, of course.)

Playing drunk/high:

JUST. DON’T. DO. IT.

This is another issue for me, especially on my days off, as these substances affect my performances. And greatly at that. Furthermore, being drunk and salty is not a good look, as you’re unable to have that critical thinking needed to improve.

I’d sobriety is key to improving, but who am I to turn down a cocktail or a good spliff?

Also, this photo remains true.

Now here’s the next question:

Can you all look back on what you’ve just read and aim to learn from it? Can you REALLY look at your replays and say ‘I made the wrong choice’? Is it possible to have some kind of note pad and take notes on your weaknesses and aim to erase them? If you can, collect your notes and post them all up here. I know it will take take, which you may not have, but I’d love to see what people really think as they play this game.

Well, for me, I’m constantly theory-fighting, during a game and after a game. So it’s easy for me to come up with a list of things I tend to do, though coming up with solutions for them isn’t as easy since it varies greatly depending on the situation I’m in, the player I’m facing, the character I’m using and the character I’m facing. And sometimes there just is no good solution to a problem.

With my recklessness, it varies from match-up to match-up, opponent to opponent, and situation to situation. Sometimes I just get reckless simply because I’m getting frustrated (usually because of losing due to a random lag spike rather than being truly outplayed), and that frustration leads me to making really stupid decisions since when I’m frustrated, I tend not to analyse the situation very well (e.g. Law backing off and clearly waiting for a jump-in, and I jump in anyway). And sometimes my recklessness just comes from desperation, though again this varies from player to player and match-up to match-up. Like against @SolidRose and his Akuma, thanks to Cody and Asuka’s cr.mks, I know I can go under his fireball zoning and slowly work him into the corner where I can usually slowly pressure him and open him up, so unless there’s 20 seconds or less on the clock, I don’t necessarily need to take big risks (like jumping) to open him up and get a life lead back. Likewise, it’s relatively easy for me to anti-zone Akuma if I have the life-lead since I can just avoid the fireballs entirely without neutral jumping and both Cody and Asuka have really consistent AAs. Obviously this changes if the time is running out, it’s the last round, and I don’t have the life lead, in which case I pretty much need to be reckless in order to get something started to potentially make a comeback. This usually leads to me jumping, though looking back on the matches, assuming that @SolidRose continues to improve his AA game, at that point in the match he’s probably looking for a jump-in so I might be able to just get in by walking/dashing in since if he’s looking for that jump, he won’t be tossing as many fireballs at me.

Not finishing my plate is more of an issue with just paying attention to my meter, my opponent’s health, and remembering how many hits I’ve done in a combo so far. This will come with practice, though I think the main reason why this is a problem for me is because (as OZleon likes to point out in the IRC chat), I change my main team almost every week (I’m about to do it again by trying out a Ken/Cammy team here at some point), and with so many team changes, it’s harder to remember exactly how much damage I’m able to deal depending on how much meter I have and the amount of scaling in the combo. Essentially, I just need to practice more with a single team. And also to stop being so stubborn as to not replace this 360 pad I have with the half worn-out HP button that is one of the big reasons that I keep dropping at least half of my game-winning combos.

The last part I think ultimately boils down to adapting to my opponent’s tendencies, and reading what they’re going to do. I feel I can do this fine in the neutral game, but vs my opponent’s wake-up for some reason I have trouble reading what they’re going to do. This’ll probably come with more practice against different opponents, since right now the only player I face on a regular basis is @Dex_Sama. And he can be quite reversal happy at times. :3

Not using Juri will come by using Juri again

Lordwilliam scared to reversal? Shit son im scared to press buttons vs you because you’ll sometimes even throw a delayed dp at me which to me makes no sense at all but it works so theres that

Also, my thoughts usually go something along the lines of ‘damn I knew I shouldve yolo flash kicked there’ and ‘damn it I shouldnt have yolo flash kicked there’

Seriously, thats about all I think of when rewatching my replays, everything else just comes from a gut feeling/reflex by now

Cause I’m nothing but a bag of neat tricks. That and I’ve been having HORRID lag spikes as of late, with no real remedy ready to fix it. I don’t have the password to make alterations to our router, and when these spikes hit, sometimes they take winning combos or good reads and say “Yup…you’re not gonna get that”. Then I drop the combo and have to hope for another way to win. Of course, it effects my opponent too I’d imagine, but I hate losing when it starts spiking like that, which I doubt it’ll stop doing anytime soon. Does anyone know if there’s a difference between using the “Easy” setup option and the “Custom” setup option for PSN? If so, I’ma have to try custom and find a way to get that password without making my intentions obvious. >_>

It jumps over lows, so sometimes stuffing attempts go “WHOOOSH!”. It’s not the fastest after fighting her and being wary of it (Thanks Reikie!), but it’s not the worst since it puts her in the air before bopping the opponent. Also, it’s not THAT unsafe on block. You can’t add pressure, but you’re not really in danger of getting blown up + you can blow up crouching attacks and lows. Not too shabby from my pov.

As if Lili didn’t have enough set-ups already.

Get off wireless altogether, thats the solution.

I keep losing cause i don’t do lab work even if some of my BnB would not be so damage wise ^^ and cause i am still learning new controller, but that is pretty much the same as being too lazy to train.

So i guess i keep losing cause i don’t have enough skill and for being too lazy

I kind of can’t due to the setup of my house. There MIGHT be one way, cause I think I spied a little ethernet port. Just hope it isn’t a phone jack or else I’m stuck with what I got.

hwo/kaz

oh no.

I understand the problem, but getting a wire is the only solution.

I bought a 50ft ethernet cable.

I have a 75ft one for if i ever have a router far from my pc lol

Well, at EVO I lost because

a) dropped important combos that might have killed, or would have gotten close

b) messed up safe tag combos, leaving a low health character in unexpectedly

c) playing against people who you shouldn’t do (a) or (b) against (Ryan Hunter, Tokido)

That’s pretty much all it takes to lose in this game!

Moral of the story?
Don’t do (a) or (b).
Do © as much as you can.

EDIT: BTW, there sure were a lot of new players today on PSN for a dead game…as usual, I didn’t get past the first fight before arcade request kicked in.

It’s not the size of the cable…

It’s how you use it right? That’s what she said! BINGO!

Will do. Pretty much from now on I’m going to note down everything which goes on in my replays and come back with my findings. How well it’ll be listed depends on the time period though. Is one week good enough to an extent?

That said, been trying to work out the spacing for Lili’s J.:hk: to cross up. You kinda have to hit it so that you hit with the leg which is bent during the J.:hk: and not the actual kick itself otherwise it’ll hit in front and it has to be at the bent leg of the J.:hk:…if that makes any sense whatsoever.

Ok, so I.m learning Nina. BnB is Hk GS, mp ss, cr.hp xx mp ss, cr.hp xx bb right?

Also she does good damage off a tag and I’ve never played that role before. Combo that I know is simple: cr.hp xx hp ss x2, ivory cutter. I have trouble knowing when to press that first hp after a tag, though.

I see some stuff about her command throw being guaranteed damage but tbh I don’t understand her hitconfirm starters.

Any advice for someone starting this character?

Going to be playing my first games using her, later.

N-123Trio if you are stuck with wireless and you can’t come up with a decent wiring solution then I suggest you look for a router of better quality and more coverage. The possibility of a repeater is also not a bad idea. Of course, I normally wouldn’t encourage anybody to go wireless due to its inconsistency but if that’s your only method you might as well improve it. When I could only play on wireless I invested on it to make it more stable. Now that I switched to a better ISP and I have a direct line to my room and both of my consoles so it is a big improvement to say the least.

My stupid hands don’t wanna do Jin’s crouch dash from the left side of the screen and it’s kinda ruining my life. #randomupdate

And probably because I do not ever want to let up or play lame. I probably kill myself more than my opponent kills me. I have solid footsies and reactions, I know my combos/set ups/Safe Jumps, so then the error comes when I get irritated chasing someone from one side of the screen to the other. That and I have this mentality about me that I can’t shake. Like when people are just constantly hitting buttons or will just go for stuff, I’m like “really? that scrubby eh? You just wake up and press buttons even though I’m right on top of you?” But honestly I shouldn’t complain about it and just meaty them. That and I just don’t understand the people who will do anything to win. Like I’ll have won a match from the get go, and then they bust out every random, herp derp trick they can think of and I’ll lose a round. The other reason would be because of lag. I cannot react when I see something too late, not with my team’s low health. That gets me killed more than anything. The Hwo players who pick Pandora’s Box and then sweep me and go for the dive kick but the game shows me they jumped over and then BAM I’m just getting hit and I’m like god dammit.

Teams/Characters that kill me: Law/Hwo/Jin/Chun/Bob/Asuka/Zangief/Guile in no order. Law is so fucking annoying, I don’t think I have to explain. Hwo is just difficult to fight against since everything is+ or a mix up. Jin is annoying since everyone just runs from me and then one hit leads to huge damage. Chun is a fucking gay ass character. Bob keeps confusing me, it’s not that I can’t block the overheads, but his normals have much more range than they should or feel like they should. Asuka is just dumb, unless I reversal, it’s a 100/0. You guess wrong, death into the same mix up. You guess right and then she does Heron dance into stuff. Zangief should NEVER be allowed to boost chain, it makes hit confirms from his already godlike normals too hard to deal with. That and the SPD range is fucking huge. Guile… just play like Knuckledu and you’ll frustrate me into oblivion. [/details]
