I’ll have to say despite the Rashid haterators, I do like John in winners top 8. He was the one that got the ball rolling for Rashid and good to see the young man is back in top action. He has his father Gachikun with him.

I brought the Kage tux and labbed some set-up/neutral stuff for a while. Nothing too fancy but I realised that cr.mp > st.hp xx MP.Shakunetsu xx VTC > air EX.Tatsu is a great way to pop your trigger, because it gives you the same kind of knockdown as VT2 gives but you aren’t spending any V-Meter. It has a bunch of meaty set-up options, I need to find a meaty HK.Stomp though.

Also I wasn’t aware, but Kage’s HK.Stomp must work to the same degree to how Necalli’s works in that it pulls his hurtbox back enough to make certain stuff work. Tip spaced cr.mk xx HK.Stomp makes a lot of 3f/4f attacks whiff and let’s him get that +3 for free. It’s pretty good, but pretty hard to space, needs to be pixel perfect. The pullback isn’t as extreme as Necalli’s though, not by a longshot.

I usually have rough ideas of what I’d like characters to have in order to improve them, but Kage doesn’t really lack much, or you can’t “improve” his faults. You can’t fix his HP buttons because they match the animations pretty perfectly. Doubt they’ll give him a real fireball.

I’m not big on him needing a “real fireball” and he basically has more of a fireball game than Sakura does with just that red fireball. Air fireball has interesting applications also that I think can be worked on more. A shoto that works without a standard fireball would be interesting design wise.

I’ll definitely mess with the c.MK/HK stomp thing.

I just want them to travel ever so slightly forward, like his EX does. It lingers and moves forward slowly.

That would certainly be better, but I could see Capcom going full yolo and just keeping him the shoto that only palm/red/air fireballs.

They’re gonna do something dumb to him because evil shotos aren’t allowed to be bad.

Just giving him 950 would probably be a big boost, I personally don’t think he should be 900 he has nothing validating it outside of evil shoto.

Yeah the 900 health is very placeholder. He doesn’t walk or dash much any faster than Akuma with less anti fireball/neutral crash stuff.

He has 875 health because he’s a cuck. Can’t let Ryu’s dirty thoughts be too strong or you could have the USF4 situation all over again.

I’m not sure if changing Kage’s fb to travel full screen will make him top 5 or make him op.

Sako generally tends to like characters that have super hard executional shit so that he can one player shit down in t mode and then bust out on you. That’s been his style basically forever.

Kage fits that bill to a certain extent, the same way S1 Chun did (chuns normal combos and even iall are some of the trickiest normal execution in the game)

The only thing really bizarre is why he doesn’t pick up Urien for aegis cheese or why he never picked up guile for VT1 cheese as these are probably some of the harder execution things in the game. But his picking menat with vt1 stuff in mind is completely and totally sako style.

Sako will throw away the tier list to swag out and then it just works out that those characters will get buffed.

I think that would make him pretty good. But they’d have to nerf the start up and recovery though. He’d no longer have cr. MK > fireball as a true string from any range. But I think he would be better overall still if he got it. But they’re not going to do it. They don’t want him to have a traditional shoto zoning game.

I mean that’s fine really because none of them play anything really that way other than Ryu and Akuma and even Ryu has certain matchups where the dash/frame trap game is better.

Being a shoto that doesn’t quick recovery full screen fireball is very interesting if there’s a way to make it work.

It was said by some Japanese player in sf4 that there 2 types of ryu, the ones that used fireballs at neutral, and the ones that used cr.mk at neutral. This was totally true. Kage was designed to be the cr.mk ryu, the problem is the cr.mk has no range so he can’t be that guy.

One of the biggest travesties of sf5 imo is the nerfing of shotos cr.mk. It basically completely changes the character into something that feels wack as shit.

I still like kage though, but it does feel like he’s missing some cheese like a command grab… or something. Then again I think everyone deserves a CG in this game.

Call it revenge for Alpha 3 where literally everyone BUT Shoto c.MKs were nerfed into the ground.
