Whoa just had an argument with a friend who just randomly attacked SF5. And he’s not one of the 09er of the group. He’s actually the highest ranked among us and like me, didn’t really play much SF4. He surfs Street Fighter reddit all the time and is definitely influenced by the bandwagon hate by some of the posters.
I wanted to screenshot and paste our conversation here, but over here in Singapore, most of us speak “Singlish”, which is the Singapore version of English. There’s Chinese and other dialects thrown in so it’s gonna be weird asf for you all to read. I’m going to type it all down and “translate” it to readable English.
Friend - As bad as SF5 is, the other fighting games can’t make it too. No one’s talking about Soul Calibur or Dead Or Alive.
Me - If you think about it, the hate on SF5 is mostly bandwagon hate. And the hate coming from 09ers.
Like people always accuse SF5 of being random.
Friend - Compared to SF4, SF 5 is really quite bad. You have to guess so much. Remember the time I beat you with 85 seconds left on the clock? (He used Birdie. Had full stocks. I’m Cammy)
You die in 3 wrong guesses
Me - Yes but who’s fault is it ultimately. Is that my fault or SF 5’s fault. Plus you’re using Birdie and I’m Cammy. So how many mistakes do you make in SF4 before a low health character dies?
Friend - You have meterless invincible DP in sf4. In SF5, if you don’t have invincible DP, it’s really quite hard.
Me - For me when I play a game, I try to throw away the negative attitude. I’m not blind to a game’s shortcomings, but I don’t like focusing on the negative parts only and bitch about it all the time. And your reply to me about dying in 3 mistakes in SF 5 isn’t relevant.
Friend - There are a lot of matches I’m just stuck in the corner hoping to guess right. If I’m right, that’s good. But if it’s a wrong guess, I get stunned and killed.
Me - Which fighting game has no guesses.
Friend - SF4

Friend - You go play a character without an EX DP then you’ll understand what I’m trying to say.
Me - So there’s really no guessing at all in sf4? No 50/50? No tick throws? (My lack of sf4 knowledge is showing here…I wanted to talk to my friend about vortex but I know nuts about it)
Friend - In SF5, you’re not only guessing on defense/wakeup. You’re guessing on offense as well.
Me - Are you sure there’s no such situation in sf4?
Friend - In SF4, almost all characters have invincible wakeup. (Is this true???)
At least if you have a choice if you want to risk doing a wakeup dp.
What can characters like Abigail/Balrog/Bison/Birdie do in sf5? I tried everything. Backdash etc. I hate losing when I don’t have an invincible wakeup dp. I can’t even wakeup jab. The only option I have is to tech a throw or block.

At this point I kinda tapped out of the conversation. I just wanted to go home for dinner.
What could I have said to disprove his point that SF4 is that godlike game he thinks it is.
Btw my friend isn’t an 09er at all. He’s a 16er who’s been jumping on the SF5 bandwagon hate due to reddit posts etc.

I like seeing the models on the VS screen tbh
Just being able to see the costume and palette in motion from the get go makes things so much easier in deciding which one you wanna pick

Most relevant characters had an invincible reversal. FADC dictated the meta hard, you needed a DP to abuse the mechanic super hard.
Anybody that doesn’t think FGs revolve around guessing when putting on an offensive are being wilfully ignorant. FGs are usually formed up a triangle that work against each other and you make a call when attacking to beat your opponents intention.
Doing a trap to catch a delay tech is a guess.
The only thing about SFIV that removed guessing were some of the HEAVY favoured OS options characters had access to. Which is bad, removing player intention and making it almost robotic is bad.
Also, just reply to your friend with “Seth lol.”

Seth,Ibuki,Akuma and Yun were the embodiment of what’s wrong with SF4.
But I still hated fighting Fuerte and Hakan more.

Your friend wants defensive options all over the place, BUT he don’t know how stressful was escaping vortexes and OS. He didn’t felt the pleasure of being pinned down by Akuma/Ibuki/Gen/Yun,etc. just to die few seconds later. In SF4 vortexes and setups were there to avoid getting dp’ed all the fuckin time for free, OS were there to convince the opponent to stop backdashing like a madman. At the very end of the game life the Japanese revealed the last OS able to dp/block/tech all at the same time. Funny,huh?
He’s right when he said SFV have too many guesses, but in SF4 you don’t have not even the possibility to guess against some characters. You don’t need to be a SF4 Taliban to don’t love SFV, the latter is a stressful game.
If he wants to play SF4 let him go, none of these game will leave a legacy behind imo. SF4 is already DEAD, SFV will follow at SF6 launch.
