SFV Lounge: Menat BUFFED, F2P SFV coming, CCCC COMBO BREAKERS coming

Hokay. So, stream archives from today: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/354961779

I’m on commentary for quite some time, though I think the actually decent commentary from my side starts around 1:50:00 and lasts for the next 4-5 sets (before that I don’t really click with my co-commentator, and for the last rounds I was just too exhausted to provide any sort of decent commentary). Feedback is appreciated.

I’m not used to live commentary yet so there are a lot of pauses that feel kinda weird from my side, and I know I say “yeah” a lot more than I should. I also like filling the time with talking about the characters and the players rather than going into match specifics if I don’t feel I can provide anything worthwhile about the match, but I’m not quite sure how that works out. Again, feedback is appreciated here, I want to work on this.

Oh, and the first match in that stream is me blowing up a Feng with Leo’s nasty wall-motherfuckery, if anyone cares.

Yo @Doctrine_Dark I never see you saying anything about playing people on here

You gonna be around tomorrow

If so would you be willing to play a platinum scrub in his quest to get gud (or, right now, figure out another character he wants to use  )

Wanna play more people in here for long sets, been feeling the most improvement and most fun doing that, and I haven’t fought a Grandmaster yet

Sounds like a good time. (Even though this is actually S3 stuff and OHC’ing Cr. Mk is basic stuff.)

This paragraph is exactly what I’ve been saying.

But I feel like I’ve stated this many many times in the last day or so. I don’t think it’s fallen on deaf ears, I just think it’s being ignored as an all to inconvenient truth.

I don’t mind reactionary play at all. I just don’t like it when that’s most,y what a game is about. I’d feel the same way if the game were based on super hard links, being smart, having perfect spacing or whatever metric makes a fighting game player good. I want games or a game that takes multiple types of skill and give sthem all a chance to breathe. As it is, terrible players with good reactions can make diamond and higher. That really wasn’t a thing in other games. You should have to have more than just good reactions to be good. No one thing should be catered to imo.

The game has a slew of issues, the lack of defensive options are just the tip of the iceberg.

Characters are still so watered down that you don’t really have tools for more than one playstyle for each, and those that do have more options are top tier or just got nerfed like Guile.

I dont think most gamers have bad reactions. People havent conditioned themselfes to do something and time it properly when they see an action occur on the screen. For example fang or ibuki command dashing across the screen, you see it for a moment but then you do nothing about it, that micro second of inaction, fear, hesitation or whatever is the difference between losing the round or winning it.

And it’s true that in sf5 you are heavily rewarded for your reactions. I’d say reactions are so important it can make the difference between being in gold or a higher rank. Two players with bad reactions can also pretty much devolve the game into chaos.
Randomly jumping to catch dashes or jumping back, or dashing in randomly, etc. There’s a huge number of games that are like this and it’s silly and unenjoyable.

Glad to report that the -2 mix up is alive and well.

how the hell do I play Cody?

I’ve been maining him since the beginning but there is this giant void when I play him going where everything goes wrong and I lose all matches (as a matter of fact it’s been nothing but losses with him today), never had a character where I’ve been more clueless to play as than any of my other mains.

I think it wouldn’t be so bad if VR and VT weren’t tied to the same bar. Right now burning a red stock for VR is just screwing over your late game unless it’s done super early. If you’re using a 3-bar VT it’s pretty much a no-go since you’ll be dangerously low on health before you can pop.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I rarely see anyone VR. If they do they are either super desperate to escape pressure or that one momentum swing will win them the game.

I feel like VR vs VT was fairly balanced early in the games life cycle and at some point it just went off the rails.

I still stand by my idea of giving everyone two “EX” moves that use V-Bar and VR’s giving half a bar back if successful (As in hits or isn’t punished in case of dodging VR’s.)

That alone would make people think about how to use their V-Bar instead of just, “Oh, VT’s ready, time to fish for a VTC and go ham.”

I have shit reactions and I’m diamond though…

That point being the blanket nerf, making all VRs punishable? Yeah can’t imagine why everyone stopped burning V-gauge for it. It was a so-so trade-off even beforehand.

What’s a fighting game where reactionary play doesn’t allow the better player to win more consistently? I can understand some old nigga that has arthritis being able to smash on a fool with good old SF2 guile zoning since as a character guile doesn’t have to have reactchunz to beat people. But at some point the other guy is gonna find a way in and if you can’t check that forward movement then you gonna lose no matter how good your SF2 days were.

The only games that I can think that don’t work around reactionary play is basically any fighting game that doesn’t have dashes or BS get in tools. I feel like as the genre has evolved it’s also allowed for characters to come equipped with stupid shit that you have to visually train yourself to beat.

I mean shit in SC6 if you don’t have have reactions you’re getting clapped by all the nightmares.

Twin and Akhos, I can’t believe y’all on the same level you were in S2. Fuck outta here.

You’re good players, you shitty scrubs!!!

I’ve been stuck in platinum for 2 seasons whatchu talkin’ bout me being good

Your better than 90% of players that have ever touched this game. In any other game that would be good.
Stop comparing yourself to pros, the average gamer doesnt compare themselves to speedrunners so you dont have to either; unless your competing ofcourse.
