The character is designed too hard to be cool and badass, not that he is trying in-universe. It’s a very bloated design with horns, fangs, eyeshadow and stuff, and the very idea of externalized negative energy is edgelordy to start with.

A tier whore will just pick the strongest character regardless of playstyle. Mago for example.
There are numerous examples in sf4 where daigo tried the best and just decided it wasn’t his thing.

And it’s funny you bring up Kage looking like an Oni, it’s one of the reasons I think his design is poorly executed, he’s a manifestation of Ryu’s long suppressed satsui no hado*, but his design is more like the one of a physical entity rather than spiritual one, he’s literally dark energy but looks a lot more like an Oni out of a folk tale
*he actually doesn’t seems to have a physical form as he just appears and disappears like a “shadow” for his fights with Sagat, Akuma and Ryu. Also we already witnessed his encounter with Sagat in the King’s own story mode and the girl that was with him didn’t saw him, she just saw Sagat having some kind of heart attack

I’m not sure what the “official” definition is, but when i see people and i myself use the term edgy it’s in reference to very particular aesthetic design and fictional tropes.
- Lots of black and/or red
- Certain evil/grimdark things like skulls, demons, references to hell/death/killing etc.
- "Spikes of Villany"
- For female characters their clothing may be more revealing or sexual compared to their good counterparts.
Not all of those those things on their own make a character edgy, but usually when you have multiples of the above in one design it does. The links provided go into a bit of detail.
Kage’s design being based on some Japanese mythos doesn’t make him not edgy, it just makes the application of that mythos in Kage’s presentation edgy.
Edit: In addition to the above, evil twin characters are typically edgy versions of the original characters. Like Venom white his black suit and fangs compared to Spider-Man.

I’ve literally watched Daigo fight enough times in person since 2006 to understand he’s a tier whore. This is the same guy who even switched from a shoto/control character to Yun just because they made Yun that stupid.
When you look at his character choices in different games
Hell before we even really list let’s go all the way back to 95 when Fresh Prince was still on the air. Daigo was playing Vampire Hunter and who was he playing?
The boss of the game and you can guess how good the boss is. He was probably 16 years old at most here. He also played Bishamon but I’m sure Bishamon wasn’t garbage.
ST: N.Ryu, Rog
HSF2: N.Ryu, CE Guile
CVS2: C Guile/Cammy/Sagat, A Blanka/Vega/Dic
3rd Strike: Ken (well jee he could have used Ryu or Akuma at least)
Guilty Gear XX/Reload: Sol (the most top tier shotoish character the game offered)
SFIV: Vanilla Ryu, AE Yun, AE 2012 Ryu (ok wasn’t that good), Ultra E.Ryu
Marvel 3: Wolverine/Dante/Akuma
SFV: Vanilla Ryu, small stint with S2 Ryu until Tampa Bison made him give up Ryu then S2/3 Guile.
That’s about as tier whore as it gets. The only real loyalty he has through most of that is he generally sticks to a shoto like character or control based characters that aren’t limb based. Even in crazy games like Marvel he just fuck it and goes for top shit with a top shoto support.
CFJ was probably the only game where he didn’t whore up the tier list for tournaments during most of the game.
The best Daigo does is stick to his gameplan and at least try to mess with his characters after they get nerfed. Hence more acceptance to his tier whoring than Mago style tier whores (although you had to give credit for Mago sticking with Ultra Yang)
