Not reading wall of text but plenty of characters in IV had sweeps to catch extended limbs, or in my case, cr.lk reached where I needed it to.
twinblades?
Offense in this game is extremely difficult without a command grab or highend walkspeed or a
Medium that confirms and doesnt push away super far on block.
There are a billion defenses to beat throws but only one real way to beat blocking. This is good because it forces neutral, but its bad because sf5 neutral is terrible.
If you want your offense to be strong, you will have to pick up a command grab with range or play karin/cammy/some mixup character like ibuki or even rog.
You CAN have stellar offense with a character like… ed as an example, but you will have to basically guess correctly on your stagger offense about 60-80% of the time…: which means YOU are the one winning, not your character. FG aew about what happens between the obvious mixup places. Mixups and shit are like gravy, not the entire meal. Sf5 forgets that and gives you a teaspoon of super salty gravy. A small overpowering amount of terribleness.
Which could explain why sometimes I do better with Karin just pushing sMK…
Ive just been fucking around with Birdie. The idea of walking to a range where i think my button will hit and just poking is refreshing.
I dont remember sweeps being used to catch extended limbs much in 4 at all. But maybe we are calling it different things. Sweeps as wiff punishes were most often targeting the opponents body, not their limb.
Obvious examples like versus sim, are not the rule.
Other wise you get people wiffing sweeps from half screen which is a very good way to die.
I’ve got no idea what you’re talking about but catching extensions of hurtboxes as they retract was like footsies 101 for IV, shotos, play the low forward game, the first whiff catches a sweep for their trouble.
Maybe you’ve confused yourself in my wording or somethin.
I mess with birdie on and off, but as he’s slow I tend to slowly walk myself to the corner… I know that’s my fault, but the higher walk speed of other characters lets me push that off a bit.
Also, I remember wiff punishing with sweep a lot in high level SF4, at least with the characters with good sweeps. Akuma notably, would do that a lot.
As far as raw range goes sweep is still the go-to whiff punish for a few characters. Memory is fuzzy but for example I think you can use Ibuki’s sweep to whiff punish things like Chun s.hp or in the mirror match a whiffed VS.
Vega’s slide is a great whiff punish tool due to is range and active frames allowing you to sweep outside the whiffed attack’s range to punish the recovery.
They werent catching the extended hurtbox. You are confusing yourself. The sweep would usually make contact either way. Catching an EXTENDED hurtbox means your move would wiff if the opponent did nothing.
Theres a VERY distinct spacing in the ryu mirror where his cr.mk will wiff but his sweep will make contact. Make the other ryu wiff cr.mk at that range and you dont need to hit an extended hurtbox.
Hitting an extended hurtbox in that MU specifically would be sweeping ryus wiffed sweep because his sweep does extend his hurtbox a bit, unlike his cr.mk which doesnt extend the hurtbox (on wiff) much at all.

And I’m talking AE and before. I don’t know what capcom did to the game in ultra, I’ve never played ultra.
You want to close the gap with birdie. If the opponent is walking forward it’s an opportunity to poke them. Since you outrange the vast majority of the cast you can keep them at bay whilst you gain ground. That’s what i’ve learnt playing the char and watching matches at high level. But you need to be careful with st hp because it can easily be jump punished.
My reactive wiff punish game was terrible in 4 but i still wiff punished easily on anticipation.
Chuns sweep as an example was huge range and perfectly safe on block so i could just read my opponent and wiff punish jabs and mediums all day.
Which is hard cuz that move is incredible. Fuck most of his buttons are.
cr.lp
mp
mk
cr.mk
hp
cr.hp
Sweep
Are all godly neutral buttons.
Add to that cr.mp being maybe the best aa button in the game. Hes got to be in the running for best normals in the game.
I agree they’re great but not unrivaled. Chun, Nash and Abigail can contest him. There are a lot of people that complain about birdie’s normals but i think it’s fair considering how terrible his walkspeed and dash in is.
To win at the highest level you either gotta play like a maniac or just have amazing neutral game with vt2 on deck.
I like dogs and Star Trek.
You’ve earned that like.
Don’t let it go to your head now.
An easy textbook example of a cr.mk being wiff punished in the sf4 shoto matchup. You will notice that the sweep, would not have whiffed. Daigo even takes a microstep forward after valle whiffs cr.mk to make sure that he didn’t wiff his sweep.
This is not an “extended” hurtbox exploitation. It’s a “you can’t block because you just whiffed” exploitation.

I’m pretty as in 3D fighters, but Dead or Alive 6 is pretty fun. The eye candy makes the ass whoopings not so bad, too.
Abi is very rough. Found that out yesterday.
Nash was traditionally a terrible match wasnt it? I remember that from season 1.
Just gotta get that zonk or cmd grab and start your oki.
