I think doa is the only time I need a tutorial to finish a tutorial. They have a whole section on on counters and this asshole cpu keeps throwing out different attacks and killing me. Fun game though.
I’ve explained it before I think. It’s a multitude of things that all lead to the conclusion that cosplay is wack.
Speaking of shit that’s also whack.
This is Twitter stuff so no guarantee this is all accurate BUT
Big white dude Tweedy supposedly may be involved with people who bypassed NDA and leaked out a list of people going to the pre launch Summit for MK11. He was pissed that certain players that don’t place real high in NRS games were being put on the list to go (obviously for branding reasons) and was taking shots at everyone. Said he was afraid people from other games that don’t place in NRS like Wong and Chris G would get invited. Alex Valle tried to give him the old man talk, but he wasn’t having it and called Valle a moron LOL.
Of course after that Tweedy’s sponsor promptly removed his sponsorship and only then he finally eats some humble pie.
To make matters worse, because of the drama Chris G had to pull a Kevin Hart and said he has withdrawn himself from the summit. To make matters worse than that Chris G has already bunkered down and said he WILL NOT PLAY any NRS games for the forseeable future.
@Evil_Canadian Why are your people so wild?
Because the NRS community operates at the reading level of the games they played. Capcom games spared EC from that fate.
Lol @ Chris Gs responce
“If i’m not wanted…”
Streetfighter 101.
You weren’t “given” wiff punishes in the oldschool. A wiff punish was hitting the opponents actual active frames OR hitting their sprite.
This is why having Norma’s with invincible frames played a good role. Much easier to hit your opponents actives if your own actives are partially invincible.
Hitting the move retraction is largely a juicebox footsies/sf4 thing. I played sf for years versus some of the best players in the country and “counterpoking” like in sf4/sf5 wasn’t much of a thing.
You were basically almost always trying to hit your opponent not their limbs. Limb based footsies did happen but was usually saved for playing against characters like sim.
Then also, the active frames and range made it easier as well.
Games that have short ranged normals like sf5, or slow, low active normals like sf5… generally have huge definciencies in wiff punishing which is why games with low range tend to be some of the worst games for footsies… but best games (or matchups) for “balance”
Also, lots of wiff punishing wasn’t actually wiff punishing, just wiff pressuring. I remember playing valle on A3, one of his best games, years after he had retired it, probably in 06 or so. Him ryu, me gen. Never played a guy that was SO GOOD at wiff pressuring me. Like everything I did and I would still wiff my st.mk like 70% of the time and give him “free” offense every time I whiffed. So… I decided to press the button… twice. And yep he walked into right into the second one. After that, he didn’t wiff pressure my st.mk with the same pressure. Now he waited a bit cause he was scared of another st.mk xx super hitting him.
Bla bla bla. That just showed me that lots of players weren’t actually wiff punishing per se, they were just wiff pressuring and it’s something that is basically a lost art with new games slow walkspeed and short ranged normals. People think it’s all about wiff punishing but, tbh, it rarely was about that.
Even the best were only doing true wiff punishes against about 10-20% of whiffed moves.
Things like watching the daigo versus poongko and that sim player sf4 exhibition where all those ryu mirrors wiff punishes happened in the corner, come about because of hyper focus and an advanced knowledge on the opponent plus being cornered. Midscreen this didn’t happen nearly as much, or if it did, it was usually a ryu mirror or 2 players he’ll bent on that style of play (like the valle/daigo famous sf4 match)
The art of wiff punishing is much deeper than hitboxes and hurtboxes, there are levels to it.
fuck chrisg
tweedy is stupid too…
Question, as I am not a SF expert by any means.
But reading that, it sounds like a lot of that comes down to the glacial walk speeds doesn’t it? Since you can’t cover ground very quickly you can’t “get in” in the same openings as before?
When i was getting back intonfighting games this video helped me understand footsies and whiff punishing a lot more.
Valle with that old people wisdom, but that stupid guy was to daft to listen.
This fucking summit thing is for promoting the game, not to show the highest of the high level play of the game.
You want big names there. If the big players are bad at marketing, too fucking bad.
NRS is out there with the summit to sell their game, not show off some nerd with no social skills that just happen to be good at their game.
Step up your brand and bring something to the table or shut the fuck up.
Also, that Tweedy guy is the fucking worst. I would punch him.
I always thought i was meant to be seeing a whiff and punishing it.
This video opened my mind to the idea of putting yourself at a range where you know what button your opponent is likely to use.
You then press your punish as kind of an educated guess.
VERY much so. As the most extreme example, ST chun and claw… much more chun than claw… could not only threaten to walk up and throw you, it was common to actually GET thrown from either character walking up and throwing you starting from just out side of sweep range. This was easier with chun because you could either pre emptively wiff punish with her cr.mk or sweep (making the opponent not want to press buttons) both of which were basically safe. But chun was kinda cancer on ST so… yeah, that’s why I used her.
Also, the huge throw ranges had ALOT to do with it as well.
I see the tiny throw ranges as a side effect of the slow movement.
As I think about it, SF4’s focus mechanic worked as a way to mitigate this a little bit as you could “pass through” some hitboxes.
SFV retains SF4s slow walk speed, but looses the focus. Which forces wiff punish as a means to create offense.
I suppose another way to look at it is, it’s just a different meta.
No but he’s not gonna wait for them to do it!
Yep. Completely different sort of game/meta.
Yeah, this is “juicebox footsies” as ive termed them, especially since he terms it “his” explanation of footsies.
But its really newschool footsies that juicebox popularized. Oldschool footsies is all the stuff in the footsies handbook. Thats stuff that all of us old men were abusing each other with back in the ‘90’s and early 2k era.
Well downside is this really is to a large extent unlike any game I’ve played before. Especially with offense.
I makes me feel like I’m starting over from the beginning in a lot of ways.
Yes and no. Watch punk, he has oldschool style
Footsies. He does moves pre emptively as well as on reaction. Theres no rule about how to do it. Its just that as the level gets higher you have more people that can do it on reaction and fewer people that try and guess, though there is always that factor of people that want to just throw iut safe things. Like my rog versus highlands sagat last night. My rog is shit, BUT, because rogs ex dash and LP dash are so safe while also havibg huge range, i could meaningfully wiff punish his moves, sometimes on reaction and sometimes on anticipation. Something i couldnt really do with any other character, not meaningfully anyways.
Yeah i hear you. Same with Blankas ball for whiff punishes. You can punish moves that usually cant be punished.
Sakura has the walk speed and range on lk that you can play that way too. See something whiff walk in and punish with lk.
Like Jin said tou need to know what buttons are for what.
Saks cr.mp for example is baller for counter poking cr.mks
