SFV Lounge: Makoto is coming for sure. F2P definitely. RIP Pertho's doggy

More like fighting game stories in general tend to suck. But yes SF’s story is quite ass

Cody was still in prison at the end of SF4. They wanted to redesign him for SF5, so they made up a story to make him the mayor and fight differently

Vega became a stance character and stopped being charge and had no story justification for it, he just decided to be that way

Ibuki lost most of her moveset and started throwing Kunais with bombs attached to them and also to throw them while standing and had no story justification for it, she just decided to be that way

They wanted Juri to be different in this game, so they made up a reason for that to be. If they wanted to play like her old self, they would have made up a reason for her new FSE to be like it was.

The story is irrelevant to how they decide to design the characters and their movesets. They decide the roster and their playstyles first, and the story second (and sometimes there is no story justifications, they just make things certain ways 'cause why not, see Vega). They wanted Juri to be more boring standard rushdown, so that’s how they made her.

SF5 is kind of unique in that they went in sort of donkey headed about a lot, but there’s been other games that have cucked characters out of things for “story” reasons. The worst is when they kill characters. Yeah, get rid of unique movesets over some larpy bullshit.

I think @Akhos has the right of it. They rethought the characters without regard for the story. The fact that it fit a few of them is pure coincidence.

Again, I like almost all the redesigns. Juri is the only one that stands out as a failure off the top of my head.

Isn’t KOF the only one that has that problem?

Street Fighter, Bison dies millions of times but they find any excuse to bring him back. Nash died, they brought him back in SF5 anyway. Evil Ryu got purged in SFV’s story but they put him in Season 4 anyway

Heihachi “dies” like every game but manages to come back. Kazumi is dead prior to the events of Tekken 7 but they made her playable by having her appear in flashbacks.

Joker is dead in Injustice 2’s universe but he’s still playable

Point being, if they want a character they’ll find a story excuse for them to be playable. I think KOF is the only one (that I personally know of) where they stick hard to the “he’s dead” lore minus dream match stuff

KoF solved the problem by reviving everyone in XIV.

Also only the Bosses and the Orochi Team ever died in KoF to my knowledge.

I love G’s story.

You dont know if he’s good or evil.

Dude comes off like a sociopath who trolls his way into sucking energy from the earth/people.

Juri got changed and nerfved because Bison poked her eye out.

KoF does but they do Dream Match years to fix it. In the Fatal Fury games Geese stays dead. Street Fighter is going to get there with Gen, Rose and Bison come SF6 or 7. We also won’t have Dan’s dad because Sagat killed him.

The Soul Calibur series killed Li Long (first nunchuck user) in Soul Edge. When it went to Soul Calibur he was replaced with Maxi (who doesn’t have the same moveset). Dead or Alive killed one of its characters too and replaced him with somebody else (but not entirely the same moveset).

Cinder died in the first Killer Instinct. So had they continued after KI2, they were never going to bring DA GOAT back. :sob:

MK is dealing with some of that. They actually killed some of the characters in the comic books between games (think Rain got GGed that way). All in all a trash idea. ooh, the Sub Zero in MK3 is a different Sub Zero from the one in MK1 and 2. that’s why he has extra moves.

Arc sys likes to do that as well. At least Team red likes to do that. Justice and Kliff only made one more appearance after they died.

Well Justice isn’t technical dead.

Team Blue also let both Murakumos die and they came back.
With actuall explanation to it, even if Nus:
She came back from the dead to Kill the man she loves with pure willpower is, might be a bit far fetched.
Well Magic, Soul transfer, Yadda Yadda. Not going to question it.

I always felt SFVs redesigns were done as inspiration ftom KI. That game got a decent reception from making their old characters new visually and gameplay wise. It allows you to see a new side of the character than just what is legacy

Doesn’t work in SF, people want the same stuff from 1992 in new graphics and nothing else.

Also reselling the same game over and over again is scam Capcom should be ashamed of themself!
Whens SFVI though, want to pre-order it.

I tried to get into the head of the average SF buyer and it hurt my head >.<

I don’t care about a character’s life, I care about their moveset. FOH with that lifetime “get to know you” nonsense behind characters. They play a certain way, people like them because of the way they play, don’t implode that moveset for shits and giggles.

Thats why Smash is easy to sell. Long as you make Mario Mario youre good, but theres no reason or room to be too experimental. Other fighting games you have a little more room to mess around

Yeah i know that the Valentines are technically Justice, but that is still a whole playstyle gone because of story which sucks. Anyway I agree with Pertho in that story shouldn’t dictate rosters.

Interesting how none of the SFV online Warlords were able to enter at least the top 40 of the tournament, Trashbox wasn’t even in the best 50.

I hate when Capcom justify the inclusion/exclusion of characters because story mode reasons, just put who people wants and call it a day.

Maybe the next S4 character is coming this month, but I don’t think he will come with something big to justify 2 months of nothing from Capcom.

Actually, from Melee to Brawl, they changed one of Mario’s special moves to something completely different. They gave Bowser a decent revamp too.

Link in the latest one had his bombs changed to be remote explosives and they removed his ranged grab, giving him a regular grab for the first time ever

Luigi in the latest one had his grab completely changed from a fast short ranged one to a slower ranged one with his vacuum

Mr. Game & Watch got a ton of new stuff and changed attacks in the latest game

They do change stuff up from time to time, but usually relegated to a move here and there or changes in how fast they can move rather than a complete redesign; they usually save any substantial new ideas for a brand new character, only changing the existing ones if it’s needed to make them stronger (ie Zelda or Bowser)

Fuckin this, I have problems at remember someone happy about the SFV version of their previous character. Maybe Bison players.

You will take your Makoto redesign and you will like it
