None of this is to say G isn’t actually good though, I do think he’s good. You’ll see people doing shit with this guy.
In terms of placement I’d say he’s in a spot comparable to Rashid or Urien.
I’ll say this about him, and Sagat as well. It’s like they were placed into the game specifically to punish certain things. Sagat, to punish what he always does, impatience and bullheadedness. G, to punish sloppy pressure. If you haven’t been keeping your frame traps and pressure tight lately, and SF5 seems to give a lot of lenience if you don’t, then G will just tap you with a light and send you on the road to the pain train.
It’s like they saw the developing sins of SF5 and sent these two in to cleanse it.

The master Urien I play regularly is also playing G. Which means yeah - he’s brimming with horseshit. Safe on block fuzzy gaurd, command grab that kills you, meterless corner carry combos into another set up.
The struggle. No defence gota block to be good…sounds awful.

There’s really not much of Season 3’s balance left anyway before we get the Season 4 changes.
In most matchups Zangief either has to worry about characters that can zone him out or characters that are better grapplers than him.
G is unique in that he’s a character that can zone him easy once he gets his level 3 fireballs while also being a better grappler than him.

Of course it’s a filthy Rashid player, always so proud of their 1 player rounds. This was one of the most horrid matches for Alex too, not sure how it is now in 3.5.

So something weird happened. I took a two day break from this game, and I actually found myself missing playing Sagat like the old days. If anyone had told me two weeks ago I’d get home today actually wanting to play some games of SFV I’d have laughed in their face.

Dang I was hoping since the nerfs Rashid would’ve gotten off people’s shit lists.
Imagine if they fixed the rest of the clusterfuck other characters have going on with them. Think that’s why I enjoy playing Necalli. I have all these tools that are good, so I can take my own approach to him. After that it feels rewarding to use his groundpounds correctly.
The games I’ve played with sagat always leave me wondering about how I’m throwing fireballs. “This fireball got jumped in, was it bad because it was jumped in or did some random shit happened? Should I have thrown a high one?” etc etc etc.
I don’t know, Sagat doesn’t feel bad to me. He just makes me feel like I’m not making the correct decisions. Nice change of pace to the aforementioned “Oh, I missed a meaty, that sucks” a lot of the game revolves around.

Sagat does have some cool meaty knee set ups after every single knockdown from TU or TK I think. But since nothing is guaranteed because of the 3 different wake up types(really only 2 you have to be worried about) I don’t even bother with them. Unless my opponent does back roll or quick rise like 5 times in a row maybe I’ll actually attempt a meaty knee that would otherwise be punishable if they did the opposite wake up that I wanted them to do.
