Yeah, I won’t talk about sf5 chun other than to say that chuns in S1 were findings ways to lose to gief in tourney.
In sf4 though, for Ibuki, maybe I was just good at the matchup. Like I watched part of that first Ibuki match you put in here… it was atrocious from what I saw. The ibuki, who is one of the best in the world, was using cr.mp wiff buffer into… L tsumuji which doesn’t even knockdown… like… why? Better to use M tsumuji as it’s better on block and confirms into KD on hit. Only thing I can think of is that gief has some kind of counterplay to blocked cr.mp xx mk tsumuji… but even if he does she can just do neckbreaker or git gud and not get cr.mp blocked (not hard to do at all) and once Ibuki gets a KD on gief it’s either easy mode safe jump or vortex city, he’s no wall in this matchup. I also use cr.mk a lot in this matchup iirc and one of the only ibukis I’ve ever seen use that button… it’s fantastic, but footsies minded Ibukis aren’t easy to come by.
Watched the second Ibuki vid with thrillhouse. I’ve played him, good player.
Unfortunately you’ve got a guy, though good, probably wasn’t even a top 5 world Ibuki, versus arguably the best gief and even though I only watched the first match that Ibuki won… it went how my matches tend to go. Out footsie gief, wall him out, don’t let him knock you down… you win. It’s not actually that hard.
Idk. Never had a particular problem with the matchup. I’ve lost to lots of gief players but I’ve never walked away thinking it was the matchup.
Stupid example, I moved to Australia, was semi decent at mvc3, got my asskicked by the locals in mvc3. Particularly the best local player took me to town. Now, he was at the time also a decent sf4 player. After getting beat down by him in mvc3, I went to the sf4 machine and rattled off a winstreak against the locals. So he comes up. He seems to main gief, smiles at me when he picks him like “haha, you gonna get yo ass kicked now” but after I easily 3-0 his gief, he steps away from the machine… basically in what looks to be shock and disbelief. I shrugged. For him it was a great matchup.
For me it was simply tuesday.
Anywho, gief never had much of an answer for Ibuki AA’s so if you had any semblance of a ground game with wiff punishing and wiff buffering you could fundamental him down and eventually get a KD and then grab some easy offense.
