chara design need to fit with the art style of the game, all these are potential good alts, but final Juri design is still superior as standard look imho, it have character but at the same time the big white pants give her also the taekwondo role (and as result also korean identity too)
First 2 are all char nothing martial art/role, third is 100% taekwondo but not “character” enough
Final Juri got everything, and also bring in a new color scheme very compatible with the rest of the cast… overall i just love how she feel like a complementary design with the 2 SF queens (Chun and Cammy) no other female charades achieved that
The final design was/is still the best. It’s not too traditional, it’s not too “out there”. I think it’s just right. Now for alts? Eh…I guess MAYBE the last one…maybe…
I’d prefer one of her alts be some kind of suit. That would be sick.
Final Juri design isnt bad, but it isnt great either. Personally I would have gone for the Nike armband martial artist look myself but then again, Im one of those people that believe nearly all SF characters should be somewhat based on martial arts. Thats also why I think Hakan had alot of potential but they dun goofed on him.
Still hoping this will be the case for the new SF5 characters.
I ask myself that question. I am talking about having these costumes as alternate ones. And honestly, I can’t complain too much, Juri’s alternate costumes have been good, for the most part. Nothing goofy like this at least
The nurse outfit from SFxTK was alright, nothing outstanding. But the first two of those concept designs are just bad ass to me. Hopefully, they will give us these costumes. I’ll have to ask them on twitter and everywhere else I can for them. Maybe these costumes would look much better on SFV graphics than on SFIV, so there’s that.
I very much agree on that. And yeah, I think Capcom goes in way too hard on silliness and goofiness.
I don’t think it necessarily has to be based on martial arts. I just think it well, has to not be goofy and ridiculous to where it’s not taken seriously. And I’ve played enough different fighting games to have seen some goofy designs.
Actually i believe a good SF design most of times must have a strong martial arts or stereotype factor going on
Juri have it with the big white pants… you see that design and quickly think "she does teakwondo and maybe she is korean"
At the same time she have a lot of individuality
Maybe she’s a lil bit overdone, but overall a very good SF design. Probably of SF4 newcomers Juri 1p is the best design with Gouken 1p and El Fuerte snake alt
The thing is with Juri’s final design is JUST THE FKING spikey hair buns and the spikes on her gloves. If you remove those, shed be 50% better in my opinion. Its like they were trying to recreate chunli or something. No! just no!.
I usually compare any new characters to SF2 and try to imagine, if these character had a 16bit sprite in the style of SSF2, would they fit into that game? If the answer is yes, then I usually like that character design.
Look at the more favourite SF3 characters for example, Makoto, Dudley, Elena, Alex, Urien, Ibuki - Karate, Boxing, Capoeira, Wrestling, Aincent Greek Wrestling, Ninjitsu (dont know if this is a real martial art tho). Remy’s fighting style is suppose to be Savate apparently, but he doesnt actually look much like a savate character. (The fact that he is basically a guile clone also doesnt help his popularity.)
Its also why I quite liked Abel & El Fuertes design even if im not too fond of their gameplay. They should make the final boss of this game some uber badass martial artists (think Geese!), who is cocky enough to just challenge the greatest fighters on earth. Because, badass fighting.
So in short, more martial arts looking characters please or at least less stupid/goofy ones. Limited the oddball characters to 1/2 per game MAX.
Juri’s hair is my biggest issue with the character design - it’s like they’re saying “HEY! SEE THIS GIRL? YEAH, SHE’S EVIL, DUDE, YEAH, NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT”
That small hairstyle element is like the imitation of a demon horns - it’s looks plain stupid and you don’t need to do that to make a character evil, more so to outright say if he/she is one.
If they kept her hair straight - doesn’t matter long or short - there would be a certain element of mystical attraction you’d have towards her.
Like that longhair juri concept - you look at her, you see a beautiful woman, you don’t suspect anything about her, nothing really speaks that there’s something off about the personality
And then BOOM - she kicks you in the gut with a smile on her face as if she enjoys violence, and unexpectedly you see a crazy bitch type of character
To me it’s much more menacing when there’s a “looks can be deceiving” design attached to a character ,it makes him/her THAT much better
This is why I hate the final design they gave her in SF4, but at least her alt costume has slightly longer hair
So get this, I applied a mod in the PC version to give her straight long hair and it looks AMAZING. It looks good enough that it kept me engaged through the “how do I Juri” phase and emerged on the other side with her as my main. I wholly agree that Juri at the very least needs a straight hair alt. That being said, the hair-horns are kind of a trademark feature now so those should probably stick around for the primary costume. All of this assuming Juri is even in SFV.
