SFV Character Request/Anticipation Thread

Welcome to the PC madness that is the modern world. You can’t really say anything these days without being labelled as a sexist or racist or anything else. It’s really getting out of hand at this point, as is evidenced by the fact that people are finding Street Fighter characters offensive.
I must say though I’m surprised to see this topic come up on SRK. This type of oversensitive nonsense is something you would find on Tumblr, not a fighting game forum.

You don’t seem to understand completely how fear works and how deep rooted it can get. If someone truly did not fear a homosexual then what they should feel is utter indifference (nothing). Intolerance and repulsion aren’t feelings in the true sense of the word, they are thoughts and actions that are symptoms of some feeling that precedes them. As animals you are wired to fear things you don’t completely comprehend, but as a sentient being you can rationally overcome any feeling if you choose to. Rather than oppose a ‘lifestyle’ (it is no more a lifestyle than heterosexuality is) that has nothing to do with you.

I love stereotypes, and I love taking a laugh at my expense but sometimes things like the depiction of Birdie in the SFA anime, where he looks and behaves like an ape in chains, strike me as something beyond stereotypes. Most of the time though, I do believe that the Japanese mean well and the rest of the world needs to get a sense of humor.

Sorry for the digression.

I would love for Capcom to give androgyny another try. Remy just didn’t hit all the notes, I think such a character would be another unique addition in a long line of unique characters.

Sorry if I didn’t elaborate my depth of knowledge on fear, but yes I do understand. It’s not fear. It’s repulsion against anything or anyone seen as immoral or an abomination of nature or of some divine law. What creates this hatred is the ingrained self-righteous zealotry that religious practitioners preach, or at least twist gospel to their own agendas.

When it comes to fear, I fear loud incomprehensible noises, or anything else that poses as a threat. I don’t feel threatened by guys walking down the street holding hands and kissing. I personally don’t care because I do think tolerance is the better resolution than discrimination.

The new “PC” roster for SFV:
-Ryu
-Chun (Now wears a baggy police uniform to prevent sexualization)
-Poison
-Eagle
-Dudley
-Akuma/Gouken’s Sister (old woman)
-Elena (Dresses normally like in CVS2 London, no accent and a doctorate in medicine)
-Blanka (Relabeled as an Otherkin)

Birdie, Bison, Nash, Cammy, Ken, and Necalli have all been removed for being too “triggering” for modern audiences.

They generally space out the new character reveals between those of returning characters, so I can expect the next character to be a returning, not redesigned character from the series. I think it will probably be either Alex or Zangief.

You forgot fat R. Mika. Otherwise the character is problematic.

I have no time for PC in SF5.

  1. There is no gay or transgender character in SF5 atm, so I don’t think the concepts of prejudice/stereotypes/phobias against them needs discussion.

  2. I think they could go with a returning favorite who wasn’t in SF4 next. However maybe they release the new characters all in a row, except the boss whom they save for the final reveal.

  3. I don’t see what is racist about Dudley, he is a distinguished wealthy gentleman with a love for flowers and manners. Everything about his character is really positive.

In all honesty, even if a character was gay would it really detract from the overall game experience? Eagle was hinted at being gay; he has class and is swag as fuck.

I don’t think there should be a gay or transgender character for the sake of it. Such a detail should just be a small part of the character and nothing more like Poison or Eagle. I’m more interested in an androgynous character to be honest. You can’t tell me someone like Amakusa from Samurai Shodown isn’t the very definition of bad ass!

We are discussing ‘what ifs’ though now, which is kind of pointless. If a gay character is in SFV then such a discussion could occur. However I’ll say that no one minds Venom from Guilty Gear cause he is just a cool guy, who only through the story mode you learn is gay. Same with Eagle, I didn’t know he was gay or hinted to be gay, just thought he was a cool looking fighter. That’s how it should be.

There’s a few characters I really want to see back in this game:
-Sodom: Wish this guy would have gotten more love in the SF4 series than a background cameo in USF4. I feel like SFxT and USF4 would be better games with Sodom instead of Rolento. He already has a counter to adapt as a V-Skill, and he can draw katanas for a V-Trigger.
-Eagle: An excellent fit for this game. His projectile reflect fits right into what we’ve seen of SFV so far, and he seems to have the right balance of range/neutral game and combo/setplay potential to play into the pacing of SFV.
-Juri/Urien: My mains from previous games, and I love their designs. Probably my safest bets on this list.
-Sakura: Hear me out on this one. She’s already a prime cantidate for a makeover, so her school outfit will probably be relegated to an alt (gotta make that DLC money) and we can finally see where “her” interpretation of Anatsuken takes her. Gameplay wise, I think she would be insane with the crush counter system, and getting a command version of cl.HP (which they gave her in Omega wink) would make for some dirty frame traps.

There is a reason I rock the pink Seth.

These two are a terrible example, they are a caricature of an actual person (Mike Tyson). That’s strictly ONE person and has nothing to do with his ethnicity, rather it has to do with the fact that when the character was created Tyson was a HUGE superstar and also extremely aggressive personality.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSKcBAq6Y5o

Yes, you heard right, he said he wants to EAT LENNOX LEWIS’ CHILDREN.

They created a caricature of Tyson at the height of his fame. They often create characters as homages or caricatures of real people. Andre the Giant, Bruce Lee and Tyson are probably the most “on the nose” examples. A caricature of a real person is different from a caricature of a group of people. None of the aspects of Boxer are being pushed as a statement that all black people or majority of black people act like this. It’s strictly a singular instance.

Birdie, especially SF Animation Birdie, however is a whole different side of the story.

THawk has never been portrayed as a “Savage”, the stereotype of the Native American is pushed a bit hard on him and doesn’t really reflect much truth of the Native American culture at all and is purely based on the stereotype portrayed in old TV shows/radio shows/movies. However in the case of Dhalsim it can be viewed as a celebration of an actual part of middle eastern and indian history, namely the Fakir (Faqir). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fakir

Denigrating Dhalsim’s fakir style bio is should mean you also criticize Ryu’s caricature as a stiff personality, wandering japanese martial artist bio. It’s no less of a trope/stereotype when it comes to movies but it’s also rooted in historical stories from that country’s own culture. The skulls around his neck seem kind of much but they do have an actual explanation for it as they are the skulls of children from his village who died in a plague which is why he fights in the first place. However I think that storyline as probably created to allow him to be a “Good Guy” when his design is based more on a Kapalika which is a fairly negative type of ascetic.

With Rose her potential Romani heritage is barely touched on or exploited as part of her character. Very little about Rose story is actually shown outside of Udon comics which aren’t canon anyway. The fortune telling stuff is about the max of it, and tarot cards are often attributed to having being created in Italy. Though the Romani fortune teller trope is overused, not to mention Rose is just a rip off of Lisa Lisa from Jojo’s.

In the end Dhalsim is more a celebration of actual cultural history rather than a “race”(read:ethnic) based propaganda. Rose’s ethnicity could be from anywhere and it’s still work, her mystical abilities don’t even come from her place of origin, it’s from her relationship with Bison. Hawk, Elena, and Birdie not so easy to write off. Hawk is portraying a native american in a fashion that never existed in the first place. Birdie is supposed to be a representation of the punk thug era of britain’s culture but they made this physical attributes and personality so over the top it doesn’t really represent that any more. Elena is pretty soft on that area, she is however portrayed as a tribal girl who can speak to the trees and wind ect, something that never really existed in almost any fashion beyond media.

I’d love to see Sakura get reworked a bit and maybe finally age a bit. Show her improving as a martial artist and maturing.

You’re not alone on that, brother

All of this talk of caricatures, stereotypes and Mike Tyson reminds me; I really want a new Punch Out game.

Yeah, a lot of people have been discussing that in this thread. It’s what I’d like to see as well, personally.

If sakura is in this game. I hope she keeps her tatsu loop

I would love to see Garuda from the EX series come back.

Although I agree with you for the most part, I would say racism is something entirely different in Japan. Japanese people have racism within their own country, however they are entirely unaware of it. They honestly believe that only the west can be racist.

Sorry it’s a washington post article but it has many other sources with the same information, just search around. They are misinterpreting as stereotypes as a celebration of culture, because of what everyone here has been saying “these stereotype, offensive or not, are based in culture and history.” The problem is they are misrepresenting these aspects. I remember during Hakan’s announcement and teasing, Capcom was referring to him as an Arab character a few times, which he’s not. Turkish people do not identify as Arabs, neither do Iranians for that matter. I don’t think this is done out of racism but rather because they simply do not understand, but in all honestly this isn’t something we can hold Capcom to yet. They are honestly trying to celebrate the world’s culture. That’s why Dahlsim and DeeJay exist. Proof could be exhibited in Tekken more so. In the Saudi Arabia stage in Tekken there use to arabic script that said “Allah” on the floor where the characters would fight. This, of course, was offensive to Muslims, and they took it out. They didn’t know what they were doing, they just thought the script looked nice and they saw it a lot when they visited the country. This is why they asked the Tekken community before creating and implementing their new Middle Eastern character, Shaheen.

I’m just trying to play the middle ground here, but I don’t really think it’s fair to hold Capcom to the racism standards of the West. I feel as though you ignore the base of their culture and how they see race by forcing your view on them. Because even though you’re right about race, gender, and sexual orientation being treated rather poorly in the series, their culture has much more work to do from within. But then again maybe I’m being slightly racist. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdyin6uipy4

Btw, what’s wrong with Poison as a transgender character? I think her whole backstory and creation is a great because of the awareness she brings to society and culture. And honestly, in the game they don’t do anything stereotype her. She is a bit over sexual, but honestly being a hermaphrodite/post op is only one part of her character. Did I miss something?

Oh well, if anything all I really want in SF5 is Rival Schools characters. There’s only 4 I’d ever want to see in Street Fighter: Kyosuke Kagami, Akira Kazama, Daigo Kazama, and Kurow Kirishima. Honestly the four of them could really fit in both story wise and gameplay pretty well. Kurow and Kyosuke disappeared at the end of Project Justice, could be that Kyosuke is tracking down Kurow for revenge and Kurow took control of Daigo again and is using him for a new plan. Akira is looking for Daigo as well. Fighting wise there aren’t many characters like Kurow out there. Daigo and Akira’s fighting styles haven’t really been in SF before either. Kyosuke is just awesome. And Scorpion from Muscle Bomber could be unique too.

I’d also like to see some SF4 characters updated too. Hakan, Juri, Abel, C. Viper, and El Fuerte could easily become staples in SF if Capcom continues to let them grow. As for new characters, I’d really like to see a drunken fist style, but not in the usual Jackie Chan form. Maybe a drunken fist Irish boxer. (I already get the irony) They could pay homage to C. Jack from the EX series (one of my favorites) by giving him a gold club instead of a bat. I have an idea for a Canadian female grappler, how is a counter part to Abel. As an Arab american I’d be cool to have a serious Arab character, maybe from Lebanon, they are a pretty modernized country. An upgrade for Karin, Sakura, and Sean would be cool. I have a bunch of ideas for new characters, but I’ll refrain from posting anymore. I don’t want my first post in the forums being too controversial.

What are Yun and Yang’s chances? I doubt they will be in the base roster, but what are their chances as DLCs?
