Compared to the way games were made before SF4 there was little to no NA involvement (other than the creation of DJ) But now games are being made with Western audiences in mind which has killed a lot of Japanese creativity.
I Disagree with this, the consumers/customers who buy fighting games and/or Japanese made games knows what to expect from the media.
Most of the uproar of people who disapprove the more sexual content of such games are most likely NOT to buy that said game.
That said, I don’t think SJW have the impact everyone is sweating over. I prefer the consumer market to vote using there wallets. This makes whats put in or taken out a marketing/business decision over any kind of response from SJW or censorship policies.
Apparently SF5 already got their ESRB ratting, and I going to assume they got their equivalent rating for the Japanese and European Ratings board.
Everyone thinks this is a SJW issue or a Censorship issue and forgets there are 3 different Ratings boards (if not more) Capcom has to address for their rating.
Each Rating category has its “guidelines”, Capcom is going to try to stick to the T for TEEN rating (ESRB rating) for all 3 major Rating boards (I don’t know what they are called in the other two ratings boards).
If Capcom sticks to the Teen rating, they will sell more copies than if they were set to M for Mature.
Honestly speaking, I don’t really care how “little” a potential SJW impact has to do on this since if the impact is any more than “no impact whatsoever”, then frankly it’s way too much of one.
Its not really censorship if you realise something is stupid and take it out.
Its a beta. Not just for balancing but for tweaking the game as a whole. I bet there was equally as much crap taken out of 4, but no one got their pants in a bunch about it as it went on behind closed doors. Its such a non-issue its almost funny.
The artists shouldn’t have to conform to the ESRB or political correctness, it should be the other way around. Like you said, the humor of R.Mika’s super is gone, and the original artistic vision is gone.
This was the original concept art for Blanka’s SF4 stage…
Note how Capcom** ‘censored’ **the crashed plane in the final product…
It’s because of those damn social justice-seeking 9/11 truthers, always infringing on our civil liberties, always making death threats/petitions/a ruckus, and trying to censor anything remotely 9/11ish from the arts. Artistic expression should be free! No more PC! No more censorship in the gaming industry! CENSORSHIP IS EVIL! FREE ONO!
(See how retarded that sounds? That’s how some of the posts here sound. What’s that? Oh, you don’t see? Carry on.)
That’s not censorship Daemos that’s changing something for whatever reason. Some reason other than censorship and it was done way before beta. Completely unrelated to the Mika and Cammy changes in every way.
Also the guy in your picture is the reason it was changed in the first place.
Also this has been explained a million times already. Call it censorship call it selective editing call it whatever you want it sucks. The Blanka stage was changed for reasons not related to STW’s Keep missing the point though and quintupling down on stupidity. Also thanks for ruining another page with an unfunny picture and a non point that you’ve already explained 20 times and been corrected on 20 times.
Good you agree that you’re wrong. The Blanka change is not censorship it’s changing something for whatever reason. Mika was changed to censor the CA, that is the reason.
Bingo indeed glad we could find common ground and you finally admit you’re wrong.
You know when you think about it. Looking back throughout gaming history. this really ain’t nothing new. Jap devs have always altered things in their games for American audiences. Namely religious and sexual stuff. I think the only thing that has really changed is that the internet is now a big thing so such info is much more easily accessible, and gaming has become mainstream and a big buisness so things like this get way more attention than they normally would back in the 90’s.
And I did kinda bitch about someone bringing this up earlier but I can’t deny they had a valid point. Most Jap devs including Capcom alter things in their games for American releases. So how is it that a series like Darkstalkers remained untouched in this regard?
There are multiple different arguments happening simultaneously, and are being elided.
Roughly:
a) Was Capcom’s decision to change the camera angle an artistically sound change?
b) Was Capcom justified in changing their content pre-release to better suit what they perceive to be audience expectations?
c) Is that audience justified in having the opinions/positions it currently has?
a) is up for debate and is basically subjective, b) is trivially yes (you are always considering your audience when producing a mass market game, and this is no different to them changing any other pre-release thing based on audience considerations), and c) is where people usually confuse Puritanism with second-wave anti-pornography feminism.
Note that b) has a corollary; are they correct in their assessment of that audience? Hard to tell.
Because moral panic is inconsistent, and depends strongly on audience awareness. Hence why Senran Kagura gets barely more than an exasperated sigh and a teen rating, while other games get put on blast for incredibly mild offences. Darkstalkers is nowhere near as big a deal as street fighter, and thus nobody gives a shit.
True. True. I’m sure if a new Darkstalkers were to come out and get coverage. People would lose it lol. But for now it gets to enjoy flying under the radar and avoid all this mess.
Can Capcom maybe add a “im a grown up” option so I can see the proper R Mika CA? I mean, it’s okay for me to watch Cammy win and show me dental floss holding her ass cheeks at bay, but I can’t handle a bum smack aka how I say hello to everybody I meet?
