SFV Censorship

It depends on how you define the word. Almost no one is openly in favor of censorship per se. Instead different people take a different view of what it means. In general the more extremely authoritarian and extremely progressive groups try to take a limited view of what censorship is. To them, it encompasses only cases where the government explicitly prohibits content from being made available to the public. Extremely libertarian groups take censorship to mean any limitation or modification of any idea intended to be conveyed by an individual or group to another individual or group. Among the general public you can likely find individuals who draw the line of censorship at various points in between.

Personally I’m more of a libertarian. I think that:

  • When you try to publish a book/essay/movie/whatever and the government tells you that you’re not allowed to do that, it’s censorship.
  • When you change the offensive words of an old book like Huckleberry Finn for a modern printing or edit out the sex scenes in a Hollywood movie before renting it out to conservative families, that’s censorship.
  • When you get controversial speakers banned from venues where they have been scheduled to deliver a talk or lecture, that’s censorship.
  • When you delete posts you don’t agree with on a public forum, that’s censorship.
  • When you want to say “what the hell” but instead say “what the heck” because your mom is around, that’s (self-)censorship.

Nice to see it is spreading beyond the FGC.

Imma just leave this here again. That’s barely covered vag & asshole in plain view and no way in hell can they change the camera angle for this one. How is this more acceptable than Mika’s butt slap? At least Mika’s crotch is covered and has even less ass visible.

I can’t wait for the outrage on this one. I suppose because she’s not slapping it though, it’s family friendly.

If only we had a PM system on SRK.

Y’know, at some point we have to presume you can be let out of your mom’s basement and be seen in polite society. If we’re wrong here, as apparently we were with Zephr, well mods have the power to close the thread.

If I could fine people 50 push-ups for posting in a thread they don’t want people to be posting in, I would. narrows eyes

I know for me, as far as the whole R.Mika thing goes, I’ve always felt that people should just shut the fuck up since nobody made a big deal over the fact that Seth (artificial human or not) is legitimately naked, Urien’s in a thong, and Zangief’s in really small speedo-esque wrestling tights. The way I see it, since there haven’t been ridiculous triggered things over those, there shouldn’t be any sort of triggered thing over R.Mika’s outfit. Sure people CAN pick and choose because freedom of speech and all, but that doesn’t mean they’re not gigantic hypocritical idiots with obvious double standards.

But then again, I’m just an Egalitarian who “hates everyone equally” and holds both genders/all races/etc to the same standards, so…what do I know, right?

I don’t think they took out the butt slap due to the butt slap itself being considered overly offensive, I just think Capcom wanted to try and tone down the content just a bit, and it was probably easier to change the slap than change something else. Similar to how if a TV show is told they can only use the word “shit” 6 times, and they currently have it written into their script 7 times. You can make the “why this and not that” arguement all day, but at some point, this was what they landed on.

Sorry to bring up the pass but what you did here with Zephyrus21. Wish you could’ve did that with Ash crimson back in the GG thread. But hey at least you did it here. Thanks for reopening the thread

It’s funny because last night I got caught up in Star Wars hype and nostalgia and I ended up watching a few videos on changes made to the movies over time by Lucas.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Comparing Star Wars to Street Fighter V?!?!? Quick to the LOL and Disagree buttons.

I’ve already said my intellectual peace on the subject, but honestly what it boils down to on the surface level; it just looks worse and it takes away from some of the edgy/cool aspects of V which were such a refreshing change from IV which I feel has nothing of artistic substance or flavor. IV was just “good enough” in both gameplay and graphics, nothing too bad but nothing too great either. V on the other hand is really shaping up to be something special and hype stuff like Mikas super and some great art direction were at the core of that for me.

At the end of the day the replacement animations are just…off, and the changes totally unnecessary. I never noticed Cammys crotch in the original but the camera angle and animation looked cool, now it looks like she’s awkwardly squatting off screen like she’s taking a shit. It looks like shit both literally and figuratively. Mika’s change seriously gives me “Greedo shoots first” vibes. Not just that it looks stupid but the edginess of it is gone. Same with Han. In the original there is no question of “did Han shoot first or did Greedo shoot first”. Han was the only one who shot period he blasted Greedo in cold blood without a seconds hesitation and it set the tone for his character of the self serving badass anti hero who eventually became the selfless badass hero.

You can’t even tell what she’s doing, people who are unfamiliar with the trailer will probably think it’s just a sound effect for the super. It takes what was an edgy and cool move and turns the tone into that of just a neutral “whatever”.

I don’t like it!

That’s actually a fairly rational response. And I totally get the “Greedo shot first” vibe, I was even thinking the same thing. Sometimes directors meddle with things, and end up making things worse. I understand how someone who was really hyped about R Mika’s art direction would be disappointed about the change. I just think there’s a difference between lableling something censorship, and being disappointed about a direction change.

The way I see it, if it doesn’t affect gameplay, it isn’t a biggie. Especially not big enough to claim that Combofiend should be “ashamed of himself” for letting it happen. That’s just silly. This entire topic has been blown way out of proportion.

This belongs in a general trend of toning down fighting games, not just regarding stimulating poses. MK is an exception because this game is mostly style over substance and it has the appropriate marketing and support.
Eg when I see the new Guilty Gear or KOF XIII, there seems to be far less violence, compared to the older versions. You hardly see any blood coming out during hits. Old Guilty Gear character portraits looked much darker than the cartoony new ones. Also SF2 seems to be the most violent installment so far. Samurai Shodown 6 Tenka, a PS2 exclusive, retained only the gameplay aspect, downgrading the violence as well from the previous versions

This is probably a result of those games migrating to consoles, whereas in the arcades they were for an older audience, mainly male. Eg next to a fighting game, there would be a kinky cab like Poker Ladies, Lady Killer and Miss World 96. Accessible to kids as well in some places that allowed U16 to enter!

But now video games are more popular than ever. But arcade games are not. Probably because they are still associated with those dark gloomy places where their residents did not care at all about values. A lot of younger players today have missed the arcade game scene. But it is exactly those types of people the arcade game developers had in mind. One of the main reasons the Sega Genesis is not that well regarded and shunned today when compared to the SNES. Sega’s arcade library was unmatched but you had to be in the arcades to appreciate it.

Ironically recently I went out with some female colleagues and for a while we had a discussion about sex and perversion. They were far more ruthless and humorous than any men I had heard so far…So I wonder who is offended by R.Mika’s pose. Dont be ashamed! Reveal yourselves!

The topic in general and the feelings around the topic have definitely escalated too far, but it’s not much of a surprise given the general state of video games production and marketing. It honestly should just be expected at this point that people will overreact to everything given how much easier it is to be aware of choices devs make now, how much easier it is to potentially influence the game before it’s released, and how polarized people are nowadays.

It certainly does make me sympathetic towards the actual developers who make the stuff.

I liked the ass slap, butt I won’t miss it.

Is the Japanese version going to remain as originally intended or will it be censored too? Oops, sorry, “self-censored”.

Guilty Gear Xrd has Ramlethal. Kof 14 will have Angel and Mai Shiranui, I hope they never tone down those characters.

And I hope Dizzy gets her old costume back, she’s a hot mom now.

When it comes to this subject, I could mention like Mu-12, but…there’s really only two words I as a Blazblue player need to say on this: Makoto Nanaya.

I did mention it 5 days ago,

I think I only mentioned Xrd and KOF14 because someone else was talking about those 2 games specifically.

By the way, this is Shoryuken, a mainly-Capcom fan-site, right? How come we completely forgot about Darkstalkers? Took me 9 pages to remember this series. And this series has been rated T since its inception.

Like I mean, wow, Felicia, man, she’s the original pasty girl, and the nerf bat never could catch her for 2 decades!

I just saw cammy’s vagina
