Sfiii3nr1 vs sfiii3ur1, mame rom clarification

Is there a reason people always recommend the Japanese version of 3rd Strike?

Edit: In fact, can I get some clarification? My Shmupmame always gives me the message: cap-33s-1.chd CHD NEEDS REDUMP. I don’t know if I need sfiii3ur1, sfiii3au, sfiii3a, whether I need cap-33s-1.chd, or 33s000.chd, or whether I need the Japanese equivalents to all of those. I’m also not sure if the folder containing the chd needs to be called sfiii3 or sfiii3ur1 (or whatever). I’m using Shmupmame, and that’s based on mame 0.148, so I’m not sure if I need an older chd or what. I’ve been using sfiii3ur1 with cap-33s-1.chd until now, but if possible I’d like to get rid of that error message, and I’d like to make sure I’m playing the right version that everyone else is playing.

Japanese version of the Rom doesn’t need the CHD file. So you don’t have to wait 20 minutes every time to load up the game.

mame.exe -listxml sfiii3* > sfiii3Roms.xml

You want to play the “Japan 990512, NO CD”.
If you have no idea why, then it probably doesn’t matter which version you actually play for now.

I have the US 990512, and it only took 20 minutes the very first time.

Please enlighten me. That’s literally the reason I made this post.

There are 3 version of game :

  • 990512 : Unblockables , Makoto Glitch , Chun low MK late cancel , Gouki overhead invincible to throw and other glitchs ;

  • 990608 : Unblockables removed , Makoto Glitch removed , no late cancel with chun , no Gouki overhead bug , back MK Shippu doesn’t work anymore , Genei Jin deals less damage , feeling that Hugo dealed less damage but not sure … and other glitch / balance fixes [ Dreamcast version ] ;

  • 990419 : there is a third revision where unblockables and Makoto glitch are present , but no clue what are the other differencies ;

Revision are time based format ( YYMMDD ) .
So the first one came on April 19 ( 1999 ) , the second one in May and the last one in June .

Concerning console versions and such ,

  • PS2 and Xbox version are conversion of 990512 ( and not straight port , which mean bugs are added in the process ) ;
  • Dreamcast version is 608 ( conversion ) and add balance changes that don’t exist in CPS3 608 ;
  • OE is a conversion of PS2 version ( so its a conversion of a conversion and it’s not Arcade Perfect unlike **Iron Galaxy said ** ) ;

990608 : Unblockables removed , Makoto Glitch removed , no late cancel with chun , no Gouki overhead bug , back MK Shippu doesn’t work anymore , Genei Jin deals less damage , feeling that Hugo dealed less damage but not sure … and other glitch / balance fixes ;

99% sure this is all false. Only thing that was changed was the unblockables and makoto glitch.

Guys I know the differences between the major revisions. I said above, “I have the US 990512”. I’m asking about the differences between the localizations of 990512. There is a Japan, USA, and Europe localization - what I want to know is why Japan is always recommended in the English speaking community. Like I said, I have the USA version, and as far as I can tell the only difference is an English language UI. The voices are still Japanese, but everything else seems the same.

Apart from the 20 minute load that Alexisdabomb referred to (only happens once), is there a functional difference between USA and Japan 990512 apart from the fact that everyone here can actually understand the language in USA 990512?

Thanks Sherlock, maybe you can read my posts before getting bitchy next time?

My bad, but that’s not really explicit in your first post…
Anyway. What’s played in japan (arcade) is the japanese version of 990512. So it’s the reference to play, wether or not there are any differences with US version.
Asia version has some flaws.

Ok . You made me doubt , so i check 990608 and 990608 Dreamcast version and you are right .
Late cancel work on 990608 but not on Dreamcast .
You can’t 360 Gouki between the overhead hit on 990608 but you can on Dreamcast .

So everything i said previously only concern the Dreamcast version i’m afraid .

Alright then. To be honest if that’s the only reason I’m going to stick with USA. Thanks.

in 990608 theres a glitch to freeze/lock up the game with urien’s Jupiter thunder :slight_smile:

I can’t remember if it’s 990512 or 990608, but pretty sure in the latter there’s also a glitch to make twelves stage into hugo stages music after a specific move and match up with KO. Both random trivia that fewer people know because no one plays the revision as we all know :slight_smile:
