SF4 Standard Edition FightStick - Problem / Defect Thread

Madcatz wiring harness

Anybody have a madcatz wiring harness that is extra (perhaps you replaced it with sanwa harness)? Long story short I may need a new one after using a little too much elbow grease. Im willing to paypal you immediately, please take a picture…Thanks to anyone who can help.

First i want to thank everyone for contributing so much helpful info regarding this topic. After days of searching, I was finally able to track down a used SE edition stick at a local game store and was very disheartened with the performance after using the stick for a few hours (especially after paying a small premium).

I’m not a “hardcore” fighting gamer by any means, and the fact of purchasing a fight stick never even crossed my mind until I recently (albeit a bit later than most of you guys) purchased SFIV and felt that the xbox 360 controller would not even suffice for a casual playing.

Even without my lack of any experience with fighting sticks, I could tell that something was horribly wrong within a few minutes of play as my character would continuously get stuck in the crouching position and could feel something “snagging” inside the joystick.

After careful consideration, I decided to take the plunge and attempt the repair to the stick myself. I did not want to wait 3-4 weeks for Madcatz to fix my problem and eat the shipping costs (I’m not even sure if my unit will be covered with warranty as it was purchased used).

I must say that with the help you guys, the washer-glue fix went pretty smoothly
(i hope- only been about an hour since repairs. some of the glue build up around the edge of the washer worries me as I hope it is not rubbing on the PCB circuit).

I know some of you guys (including the dude in the video- I lol’d by the way) are taking the big metal plate off, but I was able to sneak some gel based superglue into the washer with just the plastic restrictor plate removed.

For whatever my noob words are worth to all of you guys out there that are on the fence about returning the product or are afraid to open the box due to warranty, I would definitely make a decision quickly- either send the product in for repairs through Madcatz or open it up NOW to check on this issue. My PCB board was pretty ground down, I think a few more days of heavy use would have rendered my joystick un-repairable.

All in all, I’m still glad that I purchased this product, just a bit worried about future problems. With that said, I’m thankful that the unit appears to be “easily” moddable as even a noob like myself maybe able to swap a new joystick into it if needed.

hi, i could order the se stick and saw a video how to mod it with sanwa parts. this is the video
my english isn’t very good and because of that i didn’t understand all the things he says in the video. in the video the guy glues the sanwa washer to avoid the problems that the normal washer does. is this really needed? or can i buy a sanwa stick and sanwa buttons and an 8 way restrictor and all problems are gone? and do i have to turn the pcb like in the video?
are this parts the right?
JLF-TP-8YT (Sanwa)
Sanwa OBSF-30, schwarz
Sanwa Restrictor GT-Y
on lizarlick they say that the JLF-TP-8YT-SK is right for the SE stick. what are the differences between the SK and the normal version? i wanted to order from http://www.arcadeshop.de and there they have only the normal jlf

Assuming you could get both for retail price, you’d probably spend close to $50 getting 8 sanwa buttons and a JLF. Total savings would probably be around $30. I don’t know if that constitutes as “much cheaper”. Personally, I like the compact size of the SE compared to the TE.

Studtrooper - unfortunately I don’t live in the US where everything is cheaper. In the UK your dollar prices convert to our price in GB Pounds so things are more expensive for us. I did get them for retail - in the UK the SE sells for 70 and the parts cost me 40 from Gremlin Solutions. The TE (not that you can get one over here!!) retails for 150. Now I don’t think I count as poor by any means, but for me that was a saving of 40 which converted to USD at the current rate is close to $60.

So for the money that I have spent so far, I have a modded SE and the SF IV game itself for less than the price of a TE. If you also take into account that I have 2 SEs you can see how that $60 saving turns into $120. I have yet to even see a TE but I agree - I actually like the look and size of the SE - pity MadCatz couldn’t come up with a reliable stick that I didn’t have to mod!!

another guy on here was having the same problem as us (the HK and KKK not working and having to disconnect/reconnect the usb.) he said he ended up having madcatz fix it even though he had opened it up and replaced the buttons and stick with sanwa for no extra cost except for shipping.

I have this problem. My RT and LT will stop working once in a while, but a disconnect/connect fixes it. It was happening with stock buttons, and i just got 1 with sanwa obsf’s. Its pretty annoying and hopefully there’s a fix. When it happens, I just get ready to replug at the end of the round and can get back up and running before rd 2 starts haaah fun.

i think there is. i’ve got my se a few days ago and testet it and it’s still running. i think over replacing the parts with sanwa but is the stick and the buttons much better? i don’t have any problems with the standard stick and buttons.

I just ordered my stick, and I was wondering the same thing. I was thinking until i get my sanwa parts of glueing (sp) the washer down immediatly when i get it. Sound like a good idea?

I just got mine and I don’t know if there’s an improvement, but it definitely still sucks. The washer slides all over the place. Morons.

Hey guys,

I ordered my TE stick about 3 months ago and I recently heared that the expected shipping date will be end of May… which sucks - expecially since I’m still playing on a standarad 360 controller. The only stick which is in stock around here (= the Netherlands) is the SE stick. Now the stupid question: is a modded SE (Sanwa stick + Sanwa buttons) just as good as a TE stick?
I’m just sick of waiting, but if someone with experience with both a modded SE and a TE tells me the TE is way better, I can still wait and smash another standard 360 controller to death.

That is exactly what I did and it worked great. I glued my washer down the second I opened the stick, then put the Sanwa parts in when they arrived. I have since sold my SE and purchased a TE but that worked great when I had my SE.

I got an SE stick instore a few weeks ago. The stock stick and buttons worked great. Didn’t notice any stickiness, catching or odd behavior of the components.

The only thing superior in the TE over the SE with the same parts is simply the physical size/weight of the TE.

I have both, but prefer using the TE due to its wider physical base. I don’t have to keep my knees together while sitting to keep the TE balanced in my lap like I do with the SE. I also like the extra space to the left of the joystick to rest my wrist on while playing, with the SE my hand rests on the edge.

i guess im in the same boat as some of you

my RT and LT buttons sometimes simultaneously just stop working. to make them work again, i just replug in the controller. sometimes, the stick loses connection and automatically reconnects itself to the xbox. thing i do notice is that the RT and LT button connections are next to each other on the board.

the button problem isnt so bad, i just rearranged my buttons and config so that RT and RT are unused, but the disconnecting/reconnecting problem is annoying mid-game.

i opened my stick up so my warranty is voided, but if i call up madcatz and feigned ingnorance, i wonder if they’ll still replace it? do they even ask if u open you stick if you call with problems?

Well there maybe someway to tell that u opened it…but it may be just the buttons. I’m just guessing here.

And hopefully my SE stick will come 2nite,2morrow or friday. Fingers crossed for expedited shipping. So I’m immediatly glueing (sp) that SOB down as soon as i get it

do you still have the madcatz buttons or did you replace it with sanwa? i think the buttons are good but i want sanwa but i don’t know if they really feel better.

I got my TE today, 360 version, but sadly they not work; i plug the cable the lights in xbox guide button turns on, 2 sec and the lights turn off, the console dont recognize my constroller; how i fix that???

the german saitek hotline is funny. i just called them to hear what they say to warranty if i open the stick to put sanwa buttons inside and the allways told me that in germany there won’t be any support because the stick nerver came out her and will never be available.
has anoyone the uk number which i have to call if i call from germany?

So I just got off the phone with Brad Poteet who is a customer support tech at Madcatz. Very professional guy over the phone, told him I had a problem with my SE fightstick and automatically knew that I had a washer issue. I got him to verify that Madcatz will cover you if you open the stick. Also to save time, I don’t have to send in my SE stick at all. Madcatz is sending me a new joystick for my fightstick so I can install it myself. They even sent me an email just now with instructions on how to take the SE apart and everything! On another note, my TE I got a couple of weeks ago is starting to get scratched on the faceplate, so I asked him if Madcatz can send me a replacement decal for the TE faceplate. He is shipping that to me as well so I can manually do it myself. I hope this answers anyones questions on how Madcatz support is.
