Would replacing the switches on the stock SE stick with Cherry Microswitches offer similar performance to a Sanwa? The SE sticks are, afterall, cheap Sanwa knockoffs. I imagine it’s the crappy switches that ruin the feel of the stick, and they don’t seem that difficult to change.
im pretty sure the spring has alot to do with it feeling like shit
Is it the spring?
When I opened up my stick, I watched it depress the switches and the switches are so unevenly depressed that I figured that was the issue with going from direction to direction… The more I play around with the stick though, the more I imagine you might be right.
Is there a common hardware store spring I could purchase to replace it?
Edit: I am unsure if it is the spring, since it only has a problem (a drag) when it hits the right or the left switch.
Hi, I just got my stick today and I plan on modding it, but with the lack of sanwa parts ATM i am stuck with stock for awhile.
Does anyone else have the problem of one of the microswitches no sounding as ‘clicky’ as the other ones? It seems to me the diagonals going that direction arent as crisp but maybe its just me, IDK.
If anyone has an idea let me know; is it possible to opena microswitch and sorta ‘tweak’ it?
This is absolutely the best way to fix the problem, My stick was completely a symptomatic but once I got it out for good I decided to take a look inside, and much to my surprise, the washer was loose and the PCB was getting scraped. I tried to put glue around the washer without taking everything apart, but I could never get enough glue in there to keep the washer steady, and I was afraid of getting glue into the parts that were supposed to be moving and seizing them up. So I struggled with C-Clip for quite a while until it gave way to prodding by a small flathead and I was able to clean eveything up and glue the washer for good. By the way I did not see any grease around the hemispherical pivot, but there was grease on top of my PCB, so the washer coming out was letting the grease run out as well. tomorrow I plan to do a lube job and put the stick back together. I think it is goung would work infinitely better now and serve me well for a while to come.
are you 100% sure? how about buttons?
Most microswitches can be CAREFULLY pried open, but once you’re in there there isn’t alot you can do. Maybe shim up the switch with a TINY slip of paper so it triggers a split second earlier, like in the JLF ultimate mod?
Yea I remember mine was like that too, the :l: didn’t sound as clicky as the rest did, which bugged me for some reason.
What the washer inside the SE stick harms is a small PCB that is nothing but a set of traces designed to transmit the input signals from the microswitches around the actuator to the 5 pin connector. No matter how badly this PCB gets chewed up, it won’t matter because the replacement Sanwa JLF you put in will come with a similar PCB. I am 100% sure of this, because I just put in a Sanwa JLF in the SE and my fightstick works, even while I am holding the said scratched up PCB in my hand outside the stick, not connected to anything. The washer issue does nothing to mess up the main PCB, which transmits the fightstick input signal to the console, because this washer is not physically connected to that PCB and can’t scratch or harm it in any way.
The buttons also have nothing to do with the washer issue. They work independently of the joystick. The reason we replace them is because the stock buttons are made with spongy springs and inconsistent input depths. Even if the washer was not acting up, the stock buttons would have had to go.
SE stick arrived today played about an hour of SF4, stick seems ok atm no problems. Great stick btw much better then the hori FS3.
I got my PS3 SE in and immediately checked the joystick. It seemed okay except the diagonal down left where it seemed to have a little extra resistance. For the other corners, if you slowly push, you hear the microswitches click, then you shortly reach the corner and the stick stops. For the ‘bad’ corner, you hear the microswitches click, it seems to stop, but if you continue to push, it then keeps going and then stops at the corner, almost like there’s another switch being pushed. No real sticking and it was really quite minor, but it was definitely different. I had already ordered a replacement stick and buttons for it though, so I didn’t even bother trying it out.
Replaced the stick and buttons yesterday and took apart the old stick to check it out, but there doesn’t seem to be any damage to the PCB (of course, I really didn’t use it either).
In any case, after replacing the stick and buttons it worked like a dream. Far, far better than the FS3 I had been using.
ok, well yea that doesnt sound like it will fix my problem. Right now the stick works great, except for when I hit up and right and the same time, it lets me jump the first time, but when i hold it there i just jump straight up indefinetly.
Its kinda strage, cuz if i jump up and right and let it go to netrual and then do it again then i can do two consectutive diagonal jumps. Does this seem like a problem with teh switches? or the pcb? or a washer issue?(i glued mine down, btw).
Well, I just got my SE stock, and… it’s unplayable. :lame:
I plug it in, and it shoots to the right. Now i had been reading this thread for about an hour now and i don’t “think” i saw someone with this exact issue.
Yes most people are having the washer issue and stuck directions.
Check out my video and you can see what exactly my issue is.

Anyone know what i can do next?
Took off the back panel of my stick and removed everything, my pcb board was scratched from the washer moving freely…gonna glue the washer down so it stays in the groove, that’s if i can get the friggin c-clip off first (is there and easier to get it off?).
I’d say you got a hardware defect. Reassemble it and return/exchange it or contact MC for warranty repairs.
Hello guys, I’ve been playing with my SE stick for about a month now. I’m not a hardcore player. I usually play like 1 hour a day and 4 hours on weekends.
At first, It was very responsive, the only problem I had was 2 sticky buttons. Anyway I opened it, and “clean” the buttons. After that everything was fine (lucky for me).
Today, I turned my PS3 on for my daily Rog practice and the LP button was not responsive. I’d say that only 50% of the time I press the LP Rog actually punchs. Any idea what might be the problem here?
Oh, btw, I got my SE from ebay, I dont have the receipt and I live in Peru, so I have no hope of sending it back to MC.
Thanks in advance for your help.

2 days of playing… and the joystick stuck to down… open it up and washer was already scrapping the PCB… what a load of crap

Got my SE stick yesterday (Gameshark UK) and the stick straight out of the box is geting stuck in lots of different directions and couple of the buttons are not working properly. I stopped using the stick 10 minutes after getting it. It also has marks and stratches on it. Waited ages for this, I was hopeful I would get a “good” SE stick, if that exists??
Madcatz email say they will contact me to collect the stick. They gave me a RMA reference number. I phoned to see what was going on. They say the woman doing the RMA returns has lots to get through!! I’m still waiting!! LONG!!
I asked madcatz about replacing the parts for the sanwa ones. Their response was suprising. Told me to put this request in the covering letter and the guy who does the servicing will “see what he can do”. I said Iwas prepared to even pay madcatz for this service, but the guy on the phone says that they will not take any more money if they can do this!!
Could they possibly rectify all this bullsht by giving me a really good warranty repair with new sanwa parts? I wait in hope rather than expectation.
I do not trust my self to mod it myself, especially with those dodgy screws, and it costs about 30-40.
If they don’t won’t or can’t fix it up with sanwa parts (which would be a great touch) I am going to demand a full refund, including the 7.50 postage they charged me.
Has anyone got a refund of madcatz/gameshark for the SE? I bet they will try and say I can’t have my money back, but i’m sure I should be protected by some consumer rights. My guess is madcatz don’t have much regard for consumer rights anyway.
I hope this works out well for me and everyone else with similar problems. I feel ripped off! This site has reported so many problems, I wonder if madcatz even watches this site.
I’ve stopped playing streetfighter properly as the 306 pad is too annoying and i’m not playing with the dodgy SE stick as it may further damge my PCB, which mad catz may not replace in the repair. Who knows what they do??
Also if madcatz repair it surely the screws will get more worn away so if I do decide to mod it after the warranty expires I might have more problems replacing the parts or find new screws.
I’m confused. I feel like one of the lucky few to get one of these sticks, I would mod it if i had the skills but if i screw it up, I’ll have no stick and no money.
The madcatz guy on the phone today also said that they will be getting some more sitcks in late april. Long time to wait for a new stick and they do not take preorders.
I’m very upset. The best game ever can not be played properly for the masses without these accessories. Can’t get another SE, TE or fightpad anywhere.
This sucks.
I’ll post back later with any updates from my warranty repair. I’ll be waiting a long time i fear.
Lots of useful info on this site. Joined this site due to madcatz and me needing to vent. I think it helps.
I replaced parts in my stick with all Sanwa, and now the stick is dead. Won’t register when I plug it into PS3 or PC. Appears that either the USB cable is defective, or the main PCB is defective.
Any ideas?
