Don’t do it.
Get the HRAP EX.
Swap out the buttons (quick disconnects ftw) with Sanwa/Seimitsu ones.
Enjoy having a stick that’ll be working for years to come.
You’d have to give some benefit of the doubt and consider design and production. What he designed, he has no control over the quality assurance in production. He’s not responsible for the red glue leaking to the screws because some ppl in production could care less how it was assembled.
The washer problem may have been a production issue where it wasn’t tightened enough. That’s hard to say unless you have the blueprints to really confirm where the problem came from.
And it’s like you tell someone what you envision, and you’re at the mercy of how well that person puts it together. Maybe he did the first few just fine… but put it into massive production where you have a lot more variables and… who knows. I doubt Markman would intentionally sell you crap. At least that’s not what his reputation points to.
Just saying cut the guy some slack and see how he helps rectify the problem.
HRAP EX looks pretty damn good and isn’t really that expensive. If everything doesn’t work out I’ll probably get that stick. Is it easy to mod?
People blaming MarkMan are missing the mark (pun intended).
The sticks that MarkMan designed, the ones sent to CES, and tested out at SFI club etc. were meticulously crafted to perfection.
So the sticks that MarkMan made himself and worked on directly, are pretty god damn good, they are perfect for what they should have been.
But, once you introduced MadCatz into the equation, and whatever manufacturer they use, then you see that MadCatz has horrible quality control for these sticks.
Fact is that most people buy sticks and never mod them, just look at the number of second hand or used sticks on eBay, almost none of them are modded. People want functional and reliable sticks out of the box and MadCatz has failed when it comes to the SE stick and that’s what we know of the stick in the first week.
Down the road TE and SE sticks might start failing at alarming rates. Then we have a major problem with MadCatz and quality control. All of my stock Hori sticks are fine aside from some minor button sticking issues so should this happen (which it looks like it is going to) MadCatz is to blame.
Are the SE having problems out of the box? Yes. Is it MarkMan’s fault? No. MarkMan designed two great sticks, but MadCatz didn’t ensure that the final products would be faithful to what MarkMan had intended.
Remember, the Virtua Stick High Grade had a terrible PCB in it for the first batch of units that were produced and it took some revisions to perfect the stick.
I hope that MadCatz can resolve whatever issues there are with the TE and SE sticks like the issues were solved with the VSHG.
The constant berating of MarkMan makes zero sense.
That’s true. He does have an issue with one of his buttons. It’s just fortunate for him the issue doesn’t affect his gameplay. Still a notable issue and still can’t be considered “quality”.
Rog TAP yo. Someone needed to nerd out and mention that, so I’ll be that nerd.
Dude, my stick is freakin fine. The issue is with me not being used to the damn square corners. My input is fine. My buttons are responsive. Overall, from my perspective you guys are just unlucky. But that would be ME being an overassuming ass of myself. I have to stay clear headed and realize just because my situation doesn’t match yours that it cannot be true. You need to do your best to do the same.
I’m here to give you the benefit of the doubt, but if you’re just going to stand there and not give me the same then forget you. Seriously.
Seriously go outside, take a breath and consider for a second that even if you were to count every single person with an issue in this thread it would be less than 1% of this product sold. In other words, holy crap, yes the control has issues… and holy crap, NOT ALL OF THEM DO.
Even if this was remotely true, we have NO WAY of knowing so. You sit here making these random assumptions and spitting on anyone who even insinuates the possibility that the controllers are not exploding left and right and all around us. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen this kind of reaction to something.
This isn’t about defending Mad Catz, this is about using your head, for just a small teensy weensy moment. If I’m proven wrong, then I was proven wrong. I really hate saying this, and was avoiding looking like an asshole because there are people here who DO have issues, and definitely are in a shitty situation right now.
But watching you continue to perform the nerd rage dance all over a bonfire of burning fightsticks is really beginning to make me ill. Let’s keep this shit constructive. If there are fixes, list them. If there are problems, list them. That’s what this thread is for.
So i have a preorder for the SF4 stick the (79.99) one. Should i look into getting another stick?
defintely pick soemthing else
I just tore apart my stick since I was having issues too. Found that washer to be a problem and glued it in. Fixed that, but I’m still waiting for my JLF to come in and some red buttons. I will use the stick for a backup stick later. Outside of this issue I like my SE over my EX2.
This is not necessarily true. If all the SE sticks had been sold worldwide then yes, this would be a valid point to consider. But, when these issues came apparent, they were pre-orders that were fulfilled by some places that shipped before the release of SF4, and even still, not all the pre-orders were fulfilled. The majority of the orders are still waiting for SF4 release. So there’s a relatively small group who have these SE sticks, and an even smaller group with TE sticks at the moment.
So it may not be 1%, but more like 10%. Course these numbers are still guesses, but the number sold at current are not as high as you think given what I mentioned.
And remember, Markman has acknowledged the defects that are currently surfacing meaning that enough incidents have appeared to make it noteworthy.
But lets look at another perspective. You feel your sticks are fine, and that’s great. You love em. Lots of ppl here HATE the issue they’re presented with. They have the right to spit on them as you have the right to praise them. However, you can’t be surprised that those who are completely pissed at losing out on $70-$80 isn’t going to make a scene.
If you don’t like the way people are making a scene, then don’t say anything and don’t read, but don’t try to convince them these are quality products. It’s like putting your head in a gator’s mouth and wondering why it bit you. =P
Thanks for the comments guys, but lets focus on the thread. I want to make sure this issue is resolved so people will be happy with the product.
As is, PERSONALLY. I would swap out the stick, thats just me. And I think once you do that, you have an awesome stick.
Before anyone gets back to me and says ‘why should i have to’ etc etc… I’m just stating my personal opinion, if you have a problem with the product again, please call in.
Thanks!
I do plan on switching my stick in the future and was just wondering, for all us stick noobies, do you think you can make a step by step video on how to do it? I know it’ll help out A LOT of us if you could.
I feel so inspired after reading this haha. But you are right, I’m calling the corporate offices tomorrow about it. Also, I’m going to see if they can hook me up with a TE stick instead, but I highly doubt the latter will happen. Maybe if we start making calls to the offices, they might notice it. Here’s a number for the Madcatz offices, they’re open weekdays from 8 to 5 I believe:(619) 683-9830(Office number) Let them have it tomorrow or whenever you get a chance. They might have no idea about this.
You’re retarded. Have you ever worked in a factory before? They have a blue print. Unless MadCatz uses many different factory with different blue prints, they are ALL made the same. So please, STFU about that 1%. Unless it’s changed, all of them are using the same washer. Lets not forget that buttons are sticky as well.
Hey MarkMan, instead of telling us to change the sticks, why not address the issue? Why is there even a washer there? Are the sticks you guys showed at CES the same as the ones being made?
I have not praised these sticks in this thread. I am not about to put down your frustration by saying it’s not without merit. You have a right to be frustrated, you don’t have a right to pour hate on this item to the point it gets very biased and unfounded negative reputation due to what could be for all you know a small scale issue.
But you know what? Nevermind. Go ahead and do the damage, spread the word that it’s all bad and no good. I can’t stop you. My attempts to ask for people to look at things intelligently is interpreted as me defending, or praising this product. Please, it could be further from the truth.
I already said, I get one problem with this stick, I’m returning it. I’m not even going to attempt to fix it. Not even cracking it open. Why? Because this thread did it for me, that was the purpose of it. So people can come here and find out why their buttons are broken or why their joystick is getting stuck. I have no interest in repeating the steps someone already has and was awesome enough to share it with the rest of us.
But you know, go on, whatever. Some of us can be have a realistic interpretation with this issue. If my citing the reaction people have with the 360 doesn’t draw parallels to this situation I guess nothing will. If I had listened to the masses I’d have a PS3 right now. Proper perspective, all I ask of you.

Yes, my launch Xbox 360 should be getting the RROD any second now cuz they were made in the same factory, and cuz everyone knows all Xbox 360’s eventually get the RROD cuz M$ sucks. In fact, my iPod’s battery should stop charging soon too, it’s a few years old now. We all know how terrible those were back in 04.
See Arthong? This is exactly what I’m talking about. People get so fired up, and so SURE about their perspective, none other can exist.
Good luck to the rest of you.
My stick seems to be in perfect working order for now. I’d be more nervous if I’d actually spend real money on it as opposed to store credit.
In any case, I guess I 'm looking at +$100 worth of hardware in somewhere in my future to mod this and my fighting stick 3. Dang it I need a freakin job, being laid off sucks.
lol, you are retarded. I had a launch 360 and it RROD on me, thank god for Costco’s lifetime warranty. Funny thing is, I barely played the damn thing! And wtf does the ipod battery have anything to do with this? Just to let you know, lithium batteries can only hold a certain amount of charge before it dies.
I got my stick on Tuesday, and on Sunday the stick will no longer register down. Up, left, and right are all fine, but down doesn’t exist. I had noticed occasional direction sticking, so I assume I’m having the same washer slipping problem others have mentioned.
This is the first stick I’ve owned, and until this problem I was completely thrilled with it. I guess I’ll just get a refund tomorrow. (I’d wait and call Mad Catz support on Tuesday, but the refund policy at GameStop appears to be seven days, and I don’t want to risk it.)
I’m really bummed.
