I usually wait to counter the soul spiral when it hits deep (I think that’s the right terminology), what I mean to say is that she doesn’t just barely hit you with it and you are fairly close to her when she finishes her move. Crossing her up also works well and she has a worse fireball than Ryu, so you should be able to force her to move by using those.
Thanks a lot for taking the time to do this. I can beat dictator now because of this thread.
This is worth mentioning: if you block blanka’s slide, c.mk -> ex tatsu will deal great damage against it. I’ve been in a habbit of doing c.mk -> haduken, but thats chump damage compared to the tatsu. What blankas fear most is turtling ryus. So dont be afraid to sit there.
i tried adding to C vipers info but it said the post had become too big so i had to move her out of order. hope that this isnt a problem to anyone
Thanks so much for consolidating all of that information. It’s a bitch having to go through the threads since they are so massive nowadays.
Thanks for the hard work!
Super Test-Post
I thought I’d try to contribute to this thread by trying to list the things other characters will try to do against Ryu, instead of just listing what do to against them. Knowing the match-up should include how they’ll try to get their damage. I’ll start with Abel as a test-post, and see how this pans out. I gleamed info from the other character threads to see how different mains view the match-up. Starting with Abel…
PS. Might include comments or names from the threads I gleamed this info from. Credit to whoever contributed their thoughts.
How Abel Will Try to Get His Damage
- Try to reset after cr.hp xx lr roll xx cr.hp, leading to mixups.
Cr. Fp - Lk Roll - Cr. Fp - Lk roll - FP TT. (400 damage)
-works well on opponents who try to tech grab or block
Cr. Fp - Lk Roll - Cr. Lp - Lk roll (wind up in back of opponent) - Cr HP (270 damage + whatever you decide to do next) (credit to jwong for this one).
-works well on opponents who block wrong direction or try and escape by jumping.
Cr. Fp - Lk roll - Cr Fp - Roundhouse wheel kick (340)
-works well on opponents who down block or try and escape by jumping. Very deceptive looks like it’s going to whiff.
Cr. Fp - Lk Roll - forward kick - lk wheel kick (310)
- variation of last
c.fp - hk roll - st.lp - lk roll - c.fp (added by strider hyriu)
cr.fp xx lk roll f+mk xx dash crosses up midscreen if you time it right. (crosses up in abel mirror) (added by fulaani)

The inputs might not be important, but if you’re doing training mode, it’ll help to see how this looks, and reduce the mental damage with familiarity in a real match.
2. Hover around at footsies range, then EX-Wheel Kick over fireballs, or Ultra through fireballs. Otherwise, hell try to hit you with wheel kick thats safe on block when far enough.
3. EX- Tornado Throw you out of blockstrings or crossovers. EX-TT has 1-6 frames hit invincibility.
4. Roll forward into Tornado Throw, or roll throw fireballs into TT
5. Hit cr.FP as an Anti-air and juggle into Ultra
6. Aside from Mix-ups in the corner, theres also pressuring with forward+Mk, roll cancel, then TT against turtling
7. Rolling on wake-up shenanigans to mix-up and cr.FP or TT against a block
8. When Abel gets in close anywhere on-screen, fr.MK xx dash xx TT for pressure. Tornado throws have throw invincibility but you can probably SRK them out of this on anticipation.
10. EX-Change of Direction through pokes or sweeps since it has Super Armor.
11. Cr.HK from footsies distance, then roll cancel on block into mixups.
12. Cross-up with MK, leading into a variety of options on hit or miss.
13. A good Abel knows you want him to jump into you for SRK. He probably wont. Instead, hell probably approach with a solid footsies game, and hope for a fireball poke from you, which he can focus-absorb and dash in for close combat. Once hes in, the pressures on.
From what the posters were saying, Abel’s game is centered around mix-ups and pressure up close, as you can see in Justin Wong’s raping of other men. Strong posters in the Abel thread seem to be HAV, Bustabust. Look for them in the Abel threads. Obviously there could be more posters/players to watch for but I didn’t look deep enough in Abel threads.
Let me know what you think. I’ll add more if this is helpful.
Thank you for putting it all together!
Awesome thread man. A thing to add for Cammy:
After blocking a cannon spike, immediately dash > hp > hp shoryuken
lol, I guess this normal punish only works against Cammy?
Yes, you’re right, I could have asked nicely if this isn’t just a punish that works on wiffed moves where you got plenty of time, and not a particular Cammy-strat. Sorry bout that.
No Sakura matchup section?
I am guessing the reason there isn’t a Sakura matchup section, is because Ryu decimates my Sakura with ease.
I had hoped to see what Ryu had in his arsenal vs my Sak from a Ryu players point of view.
No, serious, I wasn’t. It’s a question: Is that a strat that goes as a matchup-tool against Cammy in particular, or just one of many punishers under Ryu’s belt that works on all wiffs where you got the time?
Maybe it doesn’t matter how I write it, you might think I’m still trying to be a smartass, you’re wrong. :karate:
Well if you aren’t, then I apologise. It really is quite hard to tell. Against most whiffed or blocked moves (such as uppercuts), if you’ve got enough time then hp > hp shoryuken will work fine as a punisher, against cammy though you specifically have to dash as she is falling down or you won’t be close enough. It’s the same with other characters, command grabbers have to dash and buffer the grab in their dash.
EDIT: f + hp > mk > shoryuken works as well, but only if the cannon spike was point blank range. Still, that’s 1/3 of Cammy’s health (318) off a blocked move.
With reversal timing they will eat an ultra as well.
Ok, thanks for explaining me. It did sound just like a punish to me at first.
Awesome thread. This should be stickied in place of the old one. I was even quoted under the Akuma section in the OP. Sweet.
yea gus is right good adivce I would always do a spin kick but hp>hp dp is so much better
this is also worth mentioning ryu can do almost anything if they use blanka ball at the wrong time. Air blanka ball and crossup blocked ultra gets a raw srk ultra, raw ultra or combo of choice for no meter
max distance slide = cr rh (sure people know) but if they know the glitch, slide can be safe at times…
Standing jab rapes Abel.
Crouching strong rapes Blanka.
only posting cause everyone keeps using the damn old thread. Dude put a lot of work into making this one. We should appreciate it and post everything in here from now on.
Tha sith has spoken.
