Of the SF manga Udon is translating into English, for those who own or have read them, which one title would you recommend the most?
I, for one, do not have much information about these manga and I know I will not be able to afford all of them (probably can afford only one), so any comments on the quality of the plot, art, etc. would be helpful to me and to anyone else in a similar situation to help decide which one to purchase.
All of them are great but if I had to choose one it would be the Street Fighter Zero manga. In the order of the ones I like the best to least, but all of them are really great.
Street Fighter Zero to me is the one that seems the most epic and complete. Ryu gets the red headband from Ken, meets Chun-Li, struggles against SNH and has a big showdown with Vega(Master Bison in the US). Also Killer Bee Cammy is present, Sakura gets Ryu’s white headband, Rose in Guy’s arms, Guy beating SNH(Evil) Ryu back to normal, a whole lot of goodness!
Ryu Final is cool for an SF series finale only it’s missing a lot of SF3 people, and maybe if it had more SF2 people and Zero characters it might of helped somewhat. Though in some ways it’s the most important / most discussed of Masahiko Nakahira’s works, still SFZ is a preference for me.
Masaomi Kanzaki’s SF2 manga is also great but to no fault of the author since that time Capcom added 5 more characters to SF2 to the mix so it just seems a bit out of date. To me the SF2 Animated Movie seems like an updated / grander version of the same story since they share similarities - Ken gets brainwashed in both and Chun-Li vs. Balrog (Ninja) happens in both.
The Sakura Ganbaru! manga is very cool but the author tends to favor Sakura a little too much for my tastes when it comes to matches and stuff. And Ryu goes back to having a white headband for no reason at all even though he ended the SFZ manga with the red headband he got from Ken… Ken even has a new red headband ponytail thing… wha…
But seriously, you do yourself a big diservice by not getting all of Masahiko Nakahira’s works, each one of them has had influences on the SF games, from him creating SNH Ryu and Karin, to Ryu training with Oro carrying that big boulder like Oro’s SF3TS ending and other things you will find. Not saying that Masaomi Kanzaki’s SF2 manga isn’t as great or influential because it is, but the Nakahira ones are more important IMHO.
Of course if it’s a money thing, I’d say get either SFZ or Ryu Final. Eh, I guess since Ryu Final is the most talked about of all his works go with that one - even if SFZ is my favorite.
From what you’ve summarized, I’m leaning towards the SF Zero one as it appears to have a wide variety of characters appearances, which is what I’m looking for. However, I’m curious to why Ryu Final is considered so highly, so I’ll likely decide between the two.
Ryu Final is a big deal because it ties up a bunch of loose ends for Ryu. His rivalries with Sagat, Gouki and Ken either come to an end or have a sense of closure. And except for possibly Ken that’s a friendly rivalry anyway the Gouki and Sagat fights are two big rivalries that the games themselves haven’t ended just yet.
