Setting the A button as 'throw' and doing kara throws

I know that sounds totally noobish, but do people do that? It seems like a much easier and consistent way of doing kara throw. I’ve practised doing a kara throw the usual way but I’ve found that just by setting the light kick button (A) to throw makes it a lot easier. Is there any real issue with this? I don’t plan on attending any tournaments any time soon and I don’t see how Ken has much use for standing kick, which I can no longer do when I set A to throw. I can still do lk air tatsu for cross ups, so overall it seems like quite a viable option. Thoughts?

Yes I do. I remember telling people about this a while ago but that used to be my main Kara throw setup on the controller. It works pretty damn well with no noticeable negatives IIRC. Standing LK isn’t used very often on Ken anyways and Cr. lk and teching still works so go for it!

Some people will advice you to use HK but Im pretty sure the range is a good 1/3rd less so I didn’t like it too much personally, however you do not have to change the setup for that. I’ve now stepped over to a stick though and Im glad I can pick Ken + my alts without having to go back to the menu to change button setups lol.

Well that’s the thing I am playing on stick now, but I still find it awkward as hell to plink with 3 buttons (f.mk plink to lk and lp). So that’s why I’m saying that I’m thinking of still doing kara throws by mapping the A button to throw. Do you kara throw the ‘normal’ way without re-mapping?

Ah you’re on a stick. Yea I got mine for about a week and a half I think and I can Kara throw consistently without changing any buttons to throw. Is your stick setup:
LP, MP, FP (top) lk, mk, HK (Bottom)? With that button setup I just use my middle finger to press MK then use both fingers (thumb + point) to press LP + LK at the same time a short pause after.

I did feel it was considerably harder on the pad to get consistent so I would have suggested the A/throw button but I think most stick users don’t change it up.

Though honestly its whatever works for you especially if you’re playing mostly casual. Even if not I don’t think it’ll hurt too much. The having to change button inputs if you wanna switch chars up imbetween endless matches- thing was annoying for me though xD

Ah we’re very much in similar boats. I main Ken now and I’ve only had my stick for a week too. I think most people do the kara throw just as you described, but that feels horribly uncomfortable to me. I do want to learn to do it the usual way though, but that involves distorting my fingers in some messed up old cranky hook-style way lol. If you wanna have a few sessions add me on xbl: farhannius

I use it with my digit 1,2 and 3, 1,2 for grab and 3 for mk… for me it is very comfortable…

I think it is only get use to it… I don’t like loosing lk although is not very usuful.

Standing light kick is useful as a safe pokek

Buying the fight stick was an opportunity to improve your game overall.

Personally, I wouldn’t go back to crutches like a throw button if I had just bought the stick.

You’re going to have to relearn everything anyway. It took me a good month of playing EVERY day before I even started feeling comfortable on the stick and a further few months to start appreciating the benefits.

Just be patient and put in the groundwork now. You’ll appreciate it I promise.

I’ll send you a FR next time I’m on buddy…

Peace,

G.

Yeah man that sounds good. I think every issue that one may have with this game can be solved simply with practise. I’ve had the stick for a week now and I’ve improved about 10,000% from when I first used it.

Yea its very crazy how I myself as well notice muscle memory improving daily as I rest and play again the next day. Motions I could only do 5/10 times the day before would go almost flawless the next day. I think my SF4 level from pad to Stick is now about 90% there after 2 weeks. Marvel Its gonna take me at least another few weeks but thats OK.

I remember looking up some stick threads and every answer to ‘‘how long does it take to get comfortable to a stick’’ was AT LEAST a month apart from maybe two replies. A week is nothing yet, you will feel the huge improvements in comfortableness and muscle memory daily =D.

I know exactly what you mean! I was searching up some ‘how to get used to stick’ threads myself and this one guy mentioned the importance of sleep for learning new motor skills. He couldn’t be more right. It just shows the brain needs time to rest in order to absorb all this new information. Still no where near what I was like on pad though! But I know as long as I keep practising I’m gonna be constantly improving.

set the two extra buttons to focus attack and taunt, then you can kara cancel focus attacks into taunt easy for extra style
