When not focus absorbing tiger shots, I tend to work the mid-range game a lot vs. Sagat. Neutral jump fierce beats everything he has besides uppercut, and that’s easily baited & punished at that range.
Once you get him scared, go for the occasional divekick into either SPD or a low short combo. Again, this move only loses to DPs, and that’s not the easiest thing to do on reaction.
When at a distance, standing fierce is also a nice move to stuff tiger shots. I wouldn’t use it within jump-in range, though.
Mid range he can tiger knee to trade with it too often for my tastes, especially since that’ll score a knockdown for him and if he knows how to do poke strings into safe tiger knee that can be very scary especially since your hit causes flip out instead of knockdown on trade.
Make sure the dive kicks hit fairly low on him since if you’re too high up and he thinks its coming instead of risks like TU he can focus since your attack hits him high and he can often release just before you get to the ground, comboing into 6Roundhouse on the spin out.
On the last bit totally agree that well time standing fierce is very good, though if you’re confident in that and you’re near enough a wall, a pre-emptive wall jump roundhouse that hits with the very tip into crouch forward into lightning legs is also very good, hooray long wall jumps!
To everyone: Remember when I linked to my matches vs. Antwan (the Balrog player)? Well, our rematch in the same tournament was finally uploaded:
- Part 1
- Part 2
Tournament format explanation: This event was divided into 3 pools (wack setup, I know, but they learned their lesson). The winners and losers finalists from each pool played each other in a 2/3 set, with the losers finalist having to win two such sets; the winner would move on to the 3-way round robin finals, while the loser would be completely eliminated. In the match I linked before, I sent Antwan to losers, and after he made his way through that we have this match.
As you can see, he adjusted very well to my j.fierce spam and wall-jumping out of the corner. I wasn’t aware that Rog had so many ways to beat j.fierce, and that made me panic at times. Besides being too predictable with those, the key mistakes I noticed from these matches were as follows:
Not wall-jumping in his face after lightning legs or super. This is a biggie right here, as it’s a safe jump-in that takes away his headbutt and makes your mixup very strong. It wasn’t until after this tournament that I learned this is a safe jump against many characters.
Not using s.fierce enough in the neutral game, especially once I have ultra. These very matches made me realize the importance of this move - when Seth has ultra, the only safe way for most characters to move in on him is to gradually walk forward, and s.fierce is the perfect counter to that.
Not using low combos (low short links, low forward xx boom xx super). You can see that he started jumping out of all my SPD setups, because I wasn’t using the option that catches jumpers! I said here before that I thought the low short combo was overrated, but now I understand its use. And plinking, which wasn’t discovered until after this tournament, has made me much more confident with it.
Not using enough EX lightning legs on reaction to dash punches. I do this a few times but miss opportunities here and there.
Not punishing headbutts properly. You can get close fierce most of the time, yet I was using crappy low jab combos instead. This is especially critical in the last round, where I could have landed close fierce -> boom -> super and probably won the entire set. This was doubly bad for me because it led to…
…Accidental supers! If you’ll notice, later in that last round, I react to his EX dash punch and go for an ultra…only to get a super that gets stuffed instead; this also would probably have won me the match if it came out properly. Additionally, in a previous round, I tried to use s.fierce after buffering the QCFx2 and got a super (not a problem anymore). No matter how much I work on it, I can’t seem to 100% solve the “super instead of ultra” issue, and have even seen this happen to Japanese players…as such, I’m considering just throwing a random EX boom at some point in these situations so I won’t have to worry about it.
Overall, this was my best learning experience yet in this game, and hats off to Antwan for a clutch performance. We’ll both be going to the Michigan monthly tournament this Saturday, so it looks like yet another rematch is in the cards. =)
If any of you have additional thoughts, feel free to share!

A trash talker Seth lol and no is not me playing.
Heh DSP.
Later he plays Gief vs Seth and thinks he will win easy because “two grabs and he is dead”
He lost.
Oh, and Chrisis:
I think wall-jump is a good gamble vs. many fireball characters, but not Sagat. Reasons being:
He has less projectile recovery than most.
If he’s using low tiger (which he always should vs. Seth), it takes longer for your jump-in to connect since he’s crouching.
If you guess wrong, fierce uppercut alone does more damage than your jump-in combo. There is also a real possibility of your jump-in trading with the uppercut, leading to 50-80% damage.
As for the tiger knee thing, I tend to use my j.fierces early on the way up. That beats both tiger knee and s.roundhouse, and forces him to guess in advance if he wants to uppercut it.
And very good advice on the divekicks!
Yup lol he might do link/chain combos but he is to obvious aka no mix up whatsoever.
Thus why wall jump needs to be preemptive, if you do it on reaction you’re going to get hit, but low tigers also have his arms way far forward which means your dive kick is even more excellent than normal if done early enough.
Like you said, standing fierce is great at long range versus Rog, but I think it’s important even if you know it’s going to be blocked. Because walljumping out of the corner is risky, I often throw a sonic boom, and then standing fierce while they’re still in blockstun from the boom just to push them back farther away. You’re minus on block a lot, but it will probably take them longer than that to cover the ground lost by the pushback. In addition, it makes them not want to immediately dash or start walking after the boom.
This is moreso a style preference, but your playstyle is very formulative. For example, every time you jumped back, you would throw a jumping fierce. Rog can just start headbutting these all day (which he did start). Empty jump back is much safer, and you can land and throw a sonic boom faster that way… Throwing out a standing fierce every time is just too risky. Also, I would have teleported in/walljumped in sometimes off of a sonic boom. Even though it’s risky and can fuck you over if he randomly headbutts, it makes your keepaway game stronger because of the threat of the teleport, and his headbutt is so slow that you can usually have thrown out a crouching jab and still recover in time to block. I just think that Seth’s runaway game isn’t really as good as a lot of people think it is, so sometimes you need to get in close and do some damage.
The PPP macro will never give you super unless you cancel into it.
Ehm, this is for 360 owners.
Right now nr.25 on the Leaderboards (Championship Mode Points)
550000+ CP, GT: Monir Look at the film. It’s me(SETH) against a Balrog.
My mistakes in the match:
I didn’t make dp.hp fast so I got hit two times by Balrogs j.hp! BAD!
Also I missed my ultra when he charged.
Thanks for the comments!
Yeah, I had mentioned being too predictable with the j.fierces. That’s something I’ve since fixed, especially now that I now what Rog can do about it.
Tournaments don’t let you use more than 6 buttons unless you’re a pad player, basically; when Fanatiq used his 1-button dash for Marvel at Evo, he had to take out one of the assist buttons in exchange. I have my stick and my 6 buttons, and I have to make the best of that.
And doesn’t the PPP macro randomly give you EX DP instead of teleport on occasion? That would rule out that option anyway, since I need that teleport mixup after ultra in most matchups. For whatever reason I can get the teleport every time, but not the ultra over super…
du var tung men du missade ngra chanser till combos
o varfr gjorde dive kick efter 3 head stomps?
spelade matchen klockan halv 2 p natten, var inte i topptrim, men det rckte,
streetfighterdojo.com: Seth
Just a quick FYI that I finally have the “Seth” page at streetfighterdojo.com up.
http://streetfighterdojo.com/sf4/characters/seth.html
I will be adding more as I screen more vids and more footage gets added to the net.
Excellent! Thank you for taking the time to set this up!
Look at film nr 7 on XBL Leaderboards with 590 000 + CP. (Championship Mode). The winner is xMikkex.
It’s a Seth mirror match, quite interesting. Look at it!
I watched that in slow motion so I could absorb the technical subtleties.
finally got my 2nd video up on XBL. It’s not very interesting though, as Ken didn’t seem to know how to fight against Seth. 113k GP, IIRC.
Not everyone has xbox live and finding videos on there is annoying anyway, shouldn’t this thread be used to post videos not tell people where to go look for them?
