Seth-in-depth Match-up Thread

On Gen? I’ll try it, there were one or two good Gens I fought a few times in G2 that knew what they were doing and it was one of my worst matchups because I have no idea how to play it. It’s hard to level up against a character who is so rarely selected (and when they are theres a chance an idiot controls them).

I really want to see the Sabin vs Yeb match from Bar Fights 2, to see how Sabin handles the matchup. I don’t know when I will get a chance to play a Gen again, G1 is like a new game, Ryu Fighter IV…

i just meant that as a counter to mk hands. maybe i should have been more specific.

also gen doesn’t have a good anti air…

anyway i’m not sure how specifically but i know seth dominates this match. i usually do. i guess the simplest way to put it is that i usually rush him the fuck down and make him afraid to throw out mk xx hands.

edit

i think it would be nice to see how sabin won.

Really? No decent anti air? His “amateur” kick (don’t know what it’s called) Where he kicks you up in the air like he’s riding a bicycle owns my jump ins and dive kicks.

i dont know, i never really get shut out by that. i don’t * just * jump-in all day. but at the same time i don’t fear it the same way i fear a shoryuken.

i think it gets beat or trades a lot so gens don’t think to use it so much. i mean looking at jibbo or yeb, you don’t see them using it to AA all that much.

Man, I never trade with that move it eats me alive! But if it did, it would be in Gen’s favour I’m guessing. You make an interesting observation jibbo and yeb hardly use it, maybe due to the recovery if they miss with it? I’ll try baiting it.

Can anyone here give any in-depth match up tips vs Ryu?

In-depth takes time, and match-ups kinda get repetitive at times, so I will try and help out with just a tidbit of how I approach the match-up:

Fullscreen-

…ryu will throw fbs at you but you can focus them and match with booms…after gaining ultra through focus, you have the 1-up…you also have the 1-up here because of wall jump into combo and far s.fierce, but don’t get dp’ed so really use your dive trajectory and poke with care

Mid-

…other than the universal dash, walk up, focus, and jumps, you have to watch out for

-tatsu…it has to be random as it doesn’t really work in reaction to projectiles very well
-fb…ryu is better than you at the fb game…he shoots them slightly faster and recovers slightly quicker…he doesn’t want to get tandem’d so a fb war with Seth is not the smartest idea
-dp…you don’t want to really throw limbs out too much as jab dp can be that one window allowing him to get on top of you

*don’t focus fish…tatsu is too random, ex hadou is too solid, low forward xx fb is a staple, and f+fierce is always possible

Work on your inside game and responding to awkward situations…

Ryu has one of the top reversals in the game…he WANTS to use it. bait it and punish it HARD

air: EX tatsu…pay attention to Ryu’s meter when you are trying to Boom/Ultra trap because Ultra is waaay too useful to waste

Start the match fullscreen. If Ryu doesn’t try to move forward, he isn’t playing right. Once he starts to move forward, mix up standing your ground to gain reward from possible mistakes (Ume Shoryus that didn’t work…jumps…random tatsus…focus charges…sweep whiffs). Level up your ability to relieve inside pressure without sacrificing too much health (Ryu has very good inside options with throw, low jab into sweep/dp, pause into dp)

*if you have to guess dp…backdash or block
-usually only happens when he has fadc but some players will risk it since they have stamina adv

*if you have to guess throw, jump out

Take lesser risk and get better at provoking it…not one of the easier match-ups, but it is winnable

Also against ryus you should be on guard on anything. As rare it may seem, duriing any point of fireball game, ryu can super cancel his fireball to his super, or worse, throw out an ex fireball and throws you in the blockstun, in which he can follow with ultra for chip damage ( works in close-med range only ). Dp FADC ultra is so easy, so good, so bad for seth, and you will have the wrath of one thousand rage quitters at one rage. Be sure to be on your toes at all time, ALL THE TIME.

As for gen, he really gives me trouble. he can build meter like mad man while be uses the mkxxhands, and he recovers and pushes me back before i can punish. That old bastard reacts to my tandem engines >:( and punishes with that freaking super to ultra combo crap.

He has accepted anti airs, and like ryu if you trade his geriko ( WTF or waterfall kick ) while you are at the peek of your jump, he can crane ultra or super you ( for seth thats bad, for others it like lolwut ) and he has his air to air crane heavy kicks to crane ultra. His usually med damage is Sagat damage to seth, and god knows how sagat damage is to seth. Thankfully i main gen aswell, and knows what punishes what. still he gives me troubles, especially the good gens.

Yeah I am working on this match up myself. I would like to hear if anyone has found some new tricks in this matchup. Ryu just seems to have good tools when fighting Seth. I used to think this was an easy match up since there are so many blah Ryus. If you fight a Ryu who knows what they are doing it is really hard.

I try not to play the footise game as Ryu seems to win that one. So I play the run game and look for a knock down to start the rush down. I bait and look for those mistakes and just keep an eye out for pattens. -Ex orgasm kick (Lighting legs) has been working me though those fireballs. It seems to push, sometimes to the corner. If he empty jumps to bait my ultra when he has ex I teliport behind and SPD.

really thinks a faster walk speed would help Seth a ton in his ground game

(walking forward with Seth is like walking on glass…)

So, I didn’t see anything about Rufus and I have a money match with an Abel/Rufus player this weekend…any tips?

Lame him out, but usually stay on the ground. Sonic Boom and standing fierce/jumping fierce/DP his attempts to close space. LP shoryu -> stomps all day. Then when you get a knockdown or a reset, go to town. You can actually safe meaty EX Messiah with a short or jab and recover in time to block if he does EX Messiah. Instant air stomp beats Messiah kick too. Meaty dive kick on his wakeup is free too.

Watch out for your jumps and walljumps in this matchup. If Rufus gets you with j.hk, there goes over half your bar if he has ultra.

I believe you can punish messiah kick with ultra on block before the followup. Otherwise, do a DP.

Don’t get pushed into the corner. If you get knocked down in the corner, you can lose in 5 seconds flat from ambiguous crossups and galactic tornado -> ultra. Seriously, stay the fuck out of the corner. This is really important.

When he pressures with dive kicks, mix it up between backwards teleport, forwards teleport, DP, standing jab, block, jump back, and backdash. Rufus has an answer for every option you have, but he can’t cover most of them at the same time. So unless you’re predictable you can get out of pressure pretty reliably. Don’t get caught trying to throw tech, though. Rufus can get half health off of a fake tick throw setup.

Fighting rufus or abel is like gambling, guess wrong and you lose, so you must keep your strong cards at hand and be ready for any suprises. If you guessed their mix up right, you can try and to either preasure them or zone them out.

With rufus kikuichi covered basically all the areas, and for abel zoning him with sonic booms is useless. Really do not zone him with sonic booms. He can just sit all day FA those sonic booms, then ultra you for 70% something (exagrating, but it is still high ), so you are left with your dhalsim arms and your normals. His rolls are defeated by throws: regular, SPD or tandem. Resets for SPD is dangerous, since he can and will go for the regular THROW INVINCIBLE TT (his command throw), and he can punish failed to link block strings with his EX TT. He has not so awesome anti air, but the moment you are hit with crouching HP, he can link to either:Anti air grab (200+ damage combo) super (not likely, it is a waste for abel unless it will win the match) or the freaking ultra (hax+ damage).

Basically treat him as a faster zangief without using sonic booms and bewaring of the ultra.

Does anyone have any matchup tips against Sim?

A good Sim is really dangerous I think. Probably because I’m not used to taste my own medicine (teleport).

Usually I just spam/lure him with Sonic boom and wait for him to attack me since Seth is the winner in a fireball war. But yeah I don’t really have anya clue against really good ones.

You can use close standing fierce on reaction to a yoga teleport to uppercutt Dhalsim as soon as he appears behind you. Also, standing roundhouse works. If he knocks you down/lets ultra go close to you, you can unleash an EX Shoryuken which you can use to draw him in with EX Tandem Engine and combo from there. Also a regular fierce Shoryuken has worked in the past for me. Dhalsim can punish the recovery of Seth’s standing fierce with his own standing fierce so be careful of that. This match is in Seth’s favour because although Dhalsim is better at spacing and zoning, Seth has loads of tools, Dhalsim is so slow and Seth is Vega in comparrison. Sim is quite easy to stun as well especially for Seth.

Against sim, you must watch out for his meter. His ultra to super combo is not to be underestimated at any cost. You can not outzone sim in his game, thanks to his air mix ups via teleport, and his corner shenanigans with ultra. Dont go for resets (he can bail out), however punish the reset escapes he attempts and keep the preasure on.

Honestly, every character in the game (except sim) must rush sim down, as it is the only “safe” way to defeat him, DO not at any cost fall to his zoning zone.

Instant air stomp = free anti-teleport. So much easier than standing fierce to time, and it leads into a reset scenario.

Don’t jump in at Sim unless you’re anticipating a limb or fireball. Sim gets huge damage off of people jumping in at him with super or ultra, or at least good damage and pressure.

If Sim uses his ultra when you’re not knocked down, it’s free ultra for you.

Sim without fireballs is pretty bad. Once you get your ultra, you can beat him in a fireball war from far away, especially if you remove teleport shenanigans with instant air stomp.

Sim has no answer for your pressure in the corner. He literally can’t do much if you keep focusing (without Sim super) and rushing him down. Yoga Fire is also a pretty bad projectile besides being slow. A psychic teleport in a fireball war can pay off immensely.

If Sim teleports out of your mixup, be prepared to ultra or standing fierce to punish.

Dive kick to beat anti-airs is useful but jumping in at Sim is still a pretty bad idea.

I know what you mean, Cole and Awesome Jones abuse the fuck out of that shit, but your post makes me want to say, “I’m just FULL of bad ideas.”

I don’t know what you mean. Are you saying my advice is bad?
