Hey, someone had to lose an EYE to get striped panties into the game.
Hey guys there is seriously no reason to get all Ad Hominem on Kristoph or others for arguing their points in the *debate about skullgirls *thread. Things seem to have cooled off but there has been some definite unnecessary hostility towards dissenting opinions and that is not the way to promote open discourse, and DEFINITELY not the way to get more people to care about Skullgirls.
I feel like everyone is confusing sexism and oversexualization in this thread, and that just because a game isn’t sexist it can be oversexualized.
EDIT: Also, censoring panties isn’t saying there’s something wrong with women’s bodies, its saying your eyes are in the wrong place.
Who says I’m male anyway?
That’s saying the same thing. If something shouldn’t be seen there must be a reason for it.
Should woman just manditorily have to be censored just because men might see them?
The problem is the thread itself. All it accomplishes is generating hate towards Skullgirls. Most people aren’t going to read all the points and make their own decision. They will just stay away from the game because they heard it was sexist. It was bad enough when Kotaku or whoever made the article but now we have SRK pushing the idea. Like I said before this thread would never fly in the MvC3 forum.
I’m just going to stop posting in here and pray that the thread stops getting bumped.
The reason this thread exists is because it’s clear that there are people who want to discuss sex and gender issues with regards to Skullgirls. Until now the issue has come up fairly regularly and every time it does it derails general discussion threads, making it hard for people to talk about gameplay and other things more directly related to the game itself.
It’s fine if you don’t want to post in this thread but the large amount of debate that used to go on in the GD thread implies that some people do, and better here than there.
To be honest, if this sort of discussion were treated with open arms or even encouraged, I think Skullgirls would be impacted positively (if at all). This goes for SRK posters, but perhaps more importantly Reverge itself. Remember when Seth Killian basically straight up said that Capcom is terrible at gender issues? The press response to that was exclusively positive as far as I’ve seen (which is mostly just a Kotaku post and some tweets, but certainly nothing negative).
Reverge could have easily capitalized on the perception that indie games are cleverer, more open and more progressive than so-called “bigger” titles, whether or not the game actually exhibited those traits. They could have said “Alex’s vision is Alex’s vision, and fans can judge for themselves whether the presentation is sexist or whatever. But way more importantly, we as a company are super interested in fostering and contributing towards the ongoing dialogue on the role of gender in the game industry, and we welcome these criticisms.”
Who would that turn away?
I find it interesting that out of the thousands of frames of animation in this game, there are people that focus on a small fraction found in this game which has pantyshots and jigging breasts. Not only do they focus on this, without seeing the big picture or how minimal and unfocused it is in the game, they jump to the conclusion that it’s not only explicitly sexual, only heterosexual males could derive enjoyment from seeing such things. This is absurd. Are these people not aware that there are also women that like seeing panty shots or jiggling breasts? How is this a “male gaze” issue? It can be a* female* one just as much as a male one. I for one think it’s ironic that someone would cry sexism in Skullgirls while at the same time making a sexist argument. In this case: only heterosexual men can have such a “gaze” and receive visual enjoyment from seeing panty shots and jiggling breasts. So there you have it ladies! If you like panty shots and jiggling breasts of any kind, you’re a dude!
I think I mentioned earlier in this thread (or maybe in another one; I’m not sure) that I’m a bit bothered by the term “male gaze,” and yeah, that’s exactly one of the reasons why. In any case, I use that terminology because it’s the standard, not because I 100% agree with it!
This reflects my opinion on the subject exactly.
Sure, bringing alot of this discussion on sexism around skullgirls is connecting this game with the topic for many people, BUT THAT MIGHT NOT BE A BAD THING. If we AS A COMMUNITY keep this topic free of mudslinging and assholery, and work to talk about the subject in a serious and dignified matter that could further the discussion on sexism and oversexualization OUTSIDE of skullgirls, then that will only reflect good things.
I’ll take a game that sparks and encourages logical, civil debate over a game that dodges it entirely any day.
I wouldn’t really classify his rebuttal as “encouragement.” Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice, but it’s more an example of Alex merely defending himself in a shitty situation than anything.
Shame this got glossed over considering it woulda refocused the thread from the NOITsNotYesitIS kinda stuff goin’ on. Even the potential DLC chars can’t get pants[although some are admittedly rather unique which is cool]; I’m now convinced Alex must live some kinda moth breeding ground where any exposed fabric is doomed to a tiny fuzzy winged death. TRAGIC.
No, ‘your eyes are in the wrong place’ meant more of a ‘you’re not looking at what the animator wanted you to look at’. If the panties were censored, it’d make that area look boring, and making things look boring is a common way to focus people on what you want them to look at (I guess in this case the move, the opponent, I guess maybe hitsparks). This applies to both men and women. In real life there’s no developer wanting you to look at something (unless you believe God manipulates everything himself, then I guess there’s the potential for him focusing your eyes), so there’s no reason for women to be censored.
Of course, since the panties weren’t censored, it means the animator doesn’t care where you’re looking. But in a hypothetical situation where they are censored, this would be more likely the cause than just censorship for censorships sake.
If I’m focusing at something naughty, odds are good God isn’t involved most of the time
Geez -_-. Left my laptop open at work, friend of mine comes through and sees this thread while searching for a packet near my desk.
Later I got a text saying "YOU SUPPORT SEXISM IN GAMEZ! IM GONNA TELL ERRRRREBODY! jk jk jk " lol
Tell the fool to stop being so god damn nosy.
I did! I was like “why you all up in shit you don’t even know the first thing about?”
Just want to remind everyone that Juri is the worst thing ever.
Nah, Cammy is the dumbest, I think. Juri is like “yeah I’m awkwardly sexual for some reason, get over it.” It’s silly, but at least it has some iota of purposefulness to it.
Cammy is like “yes, I am a serious serious combatant time to do my dut–oops is that where the camera is? How embawassing.” It makes absolutely zero sense (other than as mindless fanservice).
At least Juri is somewhat covered up Cammy’s “Combat Leotard” is kinda silly.
