Is the story as good as Y0?
Yes, maybe even better because the story starts off very strong (Y0 starts off a bit slow) and goes from there. The story is also similar to Y0 where there are a lot of twists and turns due to conspiracies and backstabbing, where as most of the other Yakuza games it was just Kiryu punching his way through most of his problems.
In terms of story, I think everything is really top notch. Acting, writing, and cinematography are all really well done.
I agree fam. The story was damn good. In most Yakuza gamed, I get lost in side events. In Judgment I wanted to see where the story lead. Side Note: Saori-chan is best girl.
Yakuza remastered collection coming…
Surprised to see that this has turned based combat. It doesn’t bother me but I’m old school. The new school of gamers seems to despise turned based combat. I wonder how this will play out.
Japan is still just fine with it, and a sizable chunk of the western Yakuza fanbase I would bet are fans of Japanese games in general, including JRPGs.
Maybe it’ll sell a little less well but I think it’ll be fine overall
Turn based could be dope as fuck. Just don’t make it needlessly complicated or needlessly layered like a lot of jrpg’s due these days out of the the “need” to be “different”
There’s a reason why Dragon Quest has barely changed in over 20 years. Cause the system works. You can be a basic combat system and still be incredibly engaging and deep.
Well, considering how big it is, I think it’s more a matter of if they don’t differentiate themselves enough people might think “why play this other version of what DQ does when I can just play DQ.” Like, I’m pretty sure they have to try different stuff to stand out.
The other thing is you gotta remember DQ is the type of game that even non-core gamers play. You can’t compare that level of built in popularity and nostalgia.
I am very wary of the new combat system, as one of the things I loved about the Yakuza series is the crazy brawls with like 50 dudes and the super stylish and epic boss fights. I don’t think the new game will ever have the same impact of having an epic brawl with a boss, having an awesome QTE to transition to phase 2, and then the cut scene right after beating the boss. I will still play the game and probably enjoy it regardless, but I was really hoping for more beat’em up action. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, but the seventh game in the series with a brand new main character was definitely the time to change things up if SEGA were going to do it.
Well at least there is the Judgment franchise for people that don’t like Yakuza’s new gameplay.
some highlights:
- The tempo of battle is not quite the same as selecting multiple commands, then watching the battle unfold based on the actions you selected… More than pure action… it is quite close to the feeling of endlessly watching a battle between several people.
- If what you’re picturing is an old school command RPG, then that’s the wrong impression. This will be completely different.
- We’re not fans of the slow pace, so it is not our intention in the least to create that sort of thing.
- While we considered doing a hybrid of action and command, it would be the same as creating two titles and there wasn’t enough time for that.
- There is an action-like element where, after selecting a command, you can follow up with a final blow attack through additional button input.
