Alright, my first Yakuza game is at platinum.
Couple of pointers of what sucks the most ass in order of piss-off-level:
Learning Mahjong and playing for a full straight. It’s actually easy to learn the game to the point where you can win games and go out with mangan a couple of times, getting the fucking straight is absolute hell though. Took me around 10 hours to clear all the mahjong shit and I’m not even counting the time I used to watch tutorials and read up on that fucking game.
Farming the 20 million yen you need to get all the damn weapons from the pawn shop and the porn shop weapons dealer. Not hard but mind-numbingly boring doing the fucking arena over and over again. Pro tip: The 400k arena points sword sells for the same amount as the 500k points junk item (1 million yen). So go for the sword and sell it to save a bit of time.
Gaining Haruka’s trust. Getting 950 points in Otometal My Life took me 40 tries. Probably because I practiced mostly tired late in the evening. If you wanna do this quickly, make sure you’re not exhausted in any way or you’ll start throwing controllers pretty quickly.
Chapter 9 car chase on legend difficulty: If you fuck up, you’ll start from the start of the chapter and have to fight through all the triads again. Took me 7 tries (bit less than 2 hours). Most important tip: Don’t aim for the heads. You deal the most damage the closer you get to the center of the target circle, often one-shotting enemies and interrupting them. Also save bullet time only for red targets and rockets, always prioritize cars and motorcycles over the rocket launcher guy on the truck as well as the machine gunner on the truck (in case of the machine gunner, you need to interrupt him then go straight back to the bikes).
Man, fuck it. I’m not waiting a year to play Kiwami 2. Just ordered Y2 for PS2 and after that I’ll play all the other games. Not gonna get my ass spoiled by Y6 when it comes it.
Finally did it:
Yakuza 0 and Kiwami plantinumed, now playing Yakuza 3 and finished Yakuza 2 before that.
You really get to appreciate Yakuza 0 for all the improvements that game has made not only to the gameplay and minigames but also for the 1080p@60FPS and the storytelling.
Honestly the old games are charming but fucking hideous, annoying to play and the 30FPS really show.
Hella sad that Yakuza 6 is 30FPS as well, but I’m hopeful that the next couple of games make huge improvements to the newly built “base game” kinda like the games evolved after 3 ending in the pinnacle that is Y0.
I heard Ishin is even better or at least on par with Y0 and that makes me even more mad that they didn’t bring that fucking games to the west, especially since it came out at a time where the fucking PS4 had like 3 games in total. What a bunch of fuckwits at Sega…
I also love the fact that Sega said that Kiwami 2 wouldn’t have been possible without Y0’s success in the west and then they say that they have no plans of localizing it yet. When I hear shit like that I’m no longer surprised that they had to can their console development and went into publishing. There’s gotta be some seriously retarded people being employed at their executive floor.
nice dunno what it was but half way through Y1 i couldnt give a fuck. Just didnt hold me like zero at all. Got time off now I gotta get back into it but meh, grind the story and not care about the trophies i guess.
@ArtVandelay
Definitely looking for forward to Yakuza 6 despite some of it’s apparent flaws (more so in the narrative rather than game play. The game play looks solid and it seems like Yakuza Kiwami 2 is going to maximize the potential of what Y6’s engine has).
I can get behind that.
The storytelling is really ass in that game and the story itself isn’t that interesting to begin with.
Y2 is better in that regard. The story itself is solid, although nothing special but they do a much better job at establishing the characters and making you give a fuck about what’s going on.
But honestly everything else is so rough in that game:
The frame rate sucks, the mini games are hella fucking annoying, the fighting system is ok but there’s so many bullshit fights and the boss mechanics are underwhelming or non existent.
So I basically rushed through Y2 on easy just checking out the story, but I can imagine myself doing all the side shit and having fun with the game when Kiwami 2 comes out.
The way I see it now, is that from a modern perspective, the Yakuza series gets playable and fun to play from Y4 (excluding Dead Souls) onwards. So they did a good thing in making Kiwami even though it could be more true to the original instead of shoehorning Majima in.
defo cosign Y4 being when shit got real, like good to play and to be invested in the mechanics. Obviously you need to get Y1 - 3 for the full manliness effect of Kazama but play style wise, until now i was happy to skip it, just really disappointed Y1 didnt hold me better. That said could be me I didnt think shit of Horizon Zero either and dudes jerking each other off about it.
Not like I’m not gonna buy both. Just heard that people were pissy about Y6 lacking pool, underground arena and shit like that. I mean it’s nice to have but hardly makes a Yakuza game great, so whatever.
Dunno about the story since I know nothing about the game, except that Majima is not playable, which is a bummer if it’s the last game with Kiryu as a protagonist.
Majima already got the shaft with the shitty last boss fights in Y0. Would like to play him once more and get some epic shit at the end.
Wish they’d make an HD edition for Dead Souls. The only thing that sucks about that game is the frame rate and the PS4 should be able to handle a couple of zombies on screen.
Just a question regarding Yakuza 0. Was the game $60 msrp on release? I saw price spikes the other day and was wondering if I should grab it while I can?
I have the first two on PS2 but nothing to hook up my PS2 too so it looks like I’ll be playing the PS4 titles, with the others for e-cred.
Yakuza games typically hold their value well and they don’t drop in price at retail because Sega makes sure to barely print any copies of the game. Yakuza 2 was getting crazy expensive before the re-print. Y3 is starting to go up in price because it was de-listed off of PSN and I doubt there are many copies of Y3 floating around.
If you buy it off Ebay it looks you can grab it for like 40 bucks, whereas The Business Edition just sold the other day for 70 bones. I imagine The Business Edition had a crazy low print-run and I’m wondering how much it’ll go for a few years from now considering how much it just went for > 1 year after release.
What is it about Y1 that doesn’t hold your attention? I thought it was great.
Y2 is considered to be one of, if not the best game in the series. I liked it a lot and consider it one of the best games on the PS2 which is no easy feat.
Y2 and Y3 have some of the strongest stories in the entire series imo. Playing Y3 right after Y2 is an amazing, amazing experience. @ExposedD You need to get a dirt cheap PS3 and experience the greatness that is Y3 and 4.
Y5 is my least favorite game of the series and most of it has to do with the terrible pacing and playing as fucking Haruka learning to sing & dance.
Yakuza Zero was more concise and well made than the others overall. However, it does not quite touch the good half of Yakuza 5. Yakuza 5’s gameplay is the best of the series. Kiryu’s chapter is filled with great character development. Saejima’s chapter between the prison escape scene to the final chase is martial arts cinema-esque magic. The tall building level is one of the best showdowns in the series. Unfortunately, the lameduck has-been baseball player is pretty shit (even if his story and baseball minigame is cool) and idol trash ruins the private investigator story of Akiyama. What the fuck were they thinking? I almost stopped playing right there, fortunately you can walk out on 95% of the idol crap and it will still move the story along. I am still fucking pissed some items I found with that bitch are not usable by fucking anyone, by the time the game reached its conclusion I was ready to take that bitch out myself!
