This game looks amazing, Haruka sections notwithstanding.
The taxi bits looks particularly interesting, for a side quest they look to have a lot of options available. Just so long as I can slam someones face into a brick wall, then kick them in the back of the head to smash their face against the wall again and THEN stomp on their face, (just in case) then I’m sure i’ll enjoy this game.
It’s funny how Yakuza can go from some of (if not, the) most brutal fighting I’ve seen in a game and segue right into a karaoke mini-game with cute animals applauding you.
Yeah I like the variety in Yakuza both see the fluffy and gritty side of Japan, something there for everyone. Personally when going for the platinum in Yakuza 4 I hated the hostess minigame the most. I can see how kids in their puberty can get a kick out of it but I had no fun whatsoever, I honestly feel fishing is fun and I had no problems with playing more of it. Saejima’s section looks like he is hunting animals so I’m hoping they keep their awesome controls from Binary Domain for the shooting segments, rather than the auto-aim from the previous entries. Also a big fan of Karaoke so I don’t have much gripe with Haruka’s section it seems pretty fun and will probably be the comedic relief of the game.
Graphics look amazing and there is an improvement in the detail of the NPC’s and environment. I’m sure we will get 100+ sidequests to tackle like the previous games and tons of gang brawling but it is nice to see the new features first. My main concern is the changes to the battle system, 4 varied the gameplay but the fighting system has aged a bit. Curious about the arcade games as well but I noticed baseball system has changed from the screenshots. Which I am happy about because this means the mini-games probably had an overhaul. Lets not forget this game has 5 entire cities to roam around in so we have seen close to nothing so far. At least from what that site says, famitsu will release more tidbits about the game till it releases later this year. We will get this game in 2013 but I can assure you we will get a demo on Japanese PSN to play the hell out of before then.
I hope this comes out here in the US as DLC and also with 1 subtitled. I’d replay it just for the japanese dubs. I will also replay 2 from the start as that’s the only one that I didn’t really finish. I played 2 all the way to the end battle but I rushed it so much that I had a hard time beating the last boss. I ended up watching the ending cinematic in Youtube and haven’t finished it
I really hope that we get our hands on Yakuza 1 and 2 HD. Would love to play them through again without having to use the PS2. It would also mean that my PS2 is completely obsolete, since I only had 3 games for it (Yakuza 1, 2 and God Hand) and Ico/SOTC is on PS3 as well now.
I would imagine it would be easy to get an English release, considering both titles were already translated anyway right? They could just have the subtitles on the disc and have the same release for all regions.
To think Japan is getting Yakuza 5 at the end of the year boggles my mind. I’m not making this up one of the core reasons I still have my PS3 is Yakuza 5.

SEGA of America is a mess, well known. I do hope for the best for everyone’s sake. My Old 1 & 2 PS2 versions are ridiculously Dark on an LCD even with the best cables. Can hardly see the mahjonng tiles in 2.

Japan Ryu Ga Gotoku 5 release this year, wow again, really sets a ticking clock to be mad at SoA for how a long wait it takes if they even decide to localize it as Yakuza 5 too.
Hunggghhh, it’s hard to say. Some people really liked it, but I personally found it a bit uninteresting to be honest. It’s certainly my least favourite Yakuza game by a country mile (but that’s not saying much since every other Yakuza game is probably tied for favourite game of the generation for me).
For $28 I would say go for it, at the very least play up until Majima’s section which has some really awesome moments.
Don’t like how homey this story is, with settling down (hostess lady or not), but maybe its all a lead up into a blur an hour into the game as Kiryu is needed to solve damn near everything, now even beyond Tokyo? who else got killer 7 vibes from the sweatsuit and smoking screenshot?
Daigo’s still supposed to be way younger than Kiryu right. Man the years as chairman haven’t been kind to him. Especially didn’t help…
Warning >> Ending of Yakuza 4 build up
[details=Spoiler]… that he beat him up on the rooftop at the end of 4.
But I did it with the twinkle star double tonfa, hilarious to get the slow mo spins and opponent keeling over animations there[/details]
Yakuza 2 & 3 spoiler
Spoiler
Daigo was a young street punk in a puffy coat… much like Umehara or other Japanese/Asian guys. Beat him up, get his mind right to head this clan again. Beat him up by 4 after saving his life in 3. Don’t know if he really changed much in his life other than Kiryu comes around to punch his face in a lot.
A lot of people may not feel the direction the game is headed with the Haruka segments and Kiryu’s new life but I love that Sega is taking risks with the final chapter on PS3. I have strong faith in this game just because of the standard set by other games and TBH I can’t wait to see gameplay footage of the new battle system.
First dramatic change is Haruka will have dance battles on the street! OMG HYPE!
Graphics in the battle portion look cleaner than Yakuza 4, I do notice some reused animations but that is it. Nice to see old thugs back for some more beatings. The game will have a more powerful version of heat actions available and when the game goes into a fight scenario it is said to be seamless. I wonder if the random snowman has to do with the new ultra heat actions available?
Well when you’re hit with being responsible for an entire clan, life will make you look like its kicking your ass.
In regards to Daigo in Yakuza 4
Spoiler
I thought he got blackmailed by the corrupt commissioner to help him out or else he would arrest the whole clan? I mean it seemed like the commissioners whole goal was to control all the clans for the money
Even though Kiryu likes to be a free agent he has a deep seeded loyalty with the clan, dude is a one man army. Tigers got nothing on him…hopefully Daigo has his head on straight this time around and doesn’t try to screw with Kazuma. PS3 is going out with a bang, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a 2013 spring release of this game worldwide.
Kiryu was head of the clan then gave up his position of power all too quickly. He didn’t spend long being in charge, having his own life to live despite all the respect he gets and having to come around to fix every problem. Definitely the big ones that have threatened the livelyhood of the entire clan, always forced his hand to comeback onto the scene.
He’s like Magic Johnson, the busiest retired person ever. With some of the tried and true gangster stories “Everytime I think I’m out they always find a way to pull me back in”
There have been a few “fake Kiryu” stories in the games, which was always fun. The recent one was PSP Black Panther 2 maybe, some guy wearing a suit and such close to what Kiryu wears.
An older Yakuza 3 interview with a Sega Sound Team member was really good. Explaining Kiryu is more of an ideal, while also making sure his contributions to the BGM is keeping Rock alive in Videogames much like it always has a place in Movies.
