I agree, Dead Souls was always a spin off game, I don’t think they expect it to compete on the level of the main Yakuza games.
On the game itself though, I’ve kind of grown tired of it. I haven’t played it in two or three weeks (about the time I started playing Fall of the Samurai) and I don’t really miss it. I love the Yakuza series to death, but this one just didn’t capture me. It’s still fun, but I find it kind of repetitive and it just isn’t as much fun as the main series. In the main series, the battles were constantly interesting, challenging and you had a great amount of moves and options in the fight, but in this one it just feels like a bland shooter. The heat snipes aren’t that much fun either.
I should give it another shot, as theres still a lot to do in the game, like training partners and whatnot, but still…
If you didn’t play Binary Domain I suggest you give it a shot, the single player campaign is gold. The Yakuza team outdid themselves regardless of what the reviews say. IMHO I think Yakuza DS was a trial run to get down TPS mechanics for BD.
The only thing I can assume is the Mario star power helped them out big time. I don’t like some of the scripted segments in Sonic Generations but in retrospect it is a very good Sonic title.
Agreed the biggest one yet and they are so familiar with the PS3 architecture that this game will probably be a heavy hitter in terms of scope. Not only that but I am banking this is the last Yakuza game this generation since the new consoles come out in 2 years. I am hoping this game gets a release window close to Japan.
Cannot wait for next week, more hyped for this than any other game. With VF5 FS coming out next month and now this news next week, I’m reminded why I love Sega.
As Sarangha said, this game has potential to be amazing. Yakuza 3 was phenomenal and that was their second game on PS3 after Kenzan. Yakuza 4 was also amazing and that was done in what, like a year of dev time? Yakuza 5 only has to be 75% as good and I’ll still love it to death.
In the meantime, this might give me the push I need to finish Dead Souls (after Max Payne 3)
Sounds great but theres a few concerns:
Taxi Driver? What happened to the orphanage? Did he hit the skids or something?
Haruka as a playable character? That will be…interesting…
Also, I would have preferred they cut down on the characters from Yakuza 4, I liked it better having just Kazuma with an obscene amount of moves and levels to go through rather than four characters. In any event, I’m not worried about this too much, I’m sure the characters will be fleshed out. I’m interested in seeing the baseball character, I wonder if he’ll have unique heat moves with the bat?
This all sounds negative, but I want to clarify I’m still sure it’s going to be outstanding, these are just my thoughts/concerns from the few details that have been revealed. I think a re-play of the entire series is in order one of these days.
I too am skeptical about the high character count but then again this game has been in development for two years when most Yakuza games only take a year to develop. Plus it will have 5 cities to run around in so I am optimistic, at this point the dev team has mastered the PS3 architecture, so this will probably end up being one of the greatest games on the PS3. As Yakuza fans we know baseball is a big theme in the series, a lot of sidequests are linked to the minigame. Not to mention a few boss fights occurred at the batting cages and Kazuma loves baseball. I think this is a good addition though I admit the Haruka choice is weird, I am hoping she ages a bit but they say the game picks up where 4 left off asap. Yakuza 5 will probably be the greatest Yakuza ever made free.
I got both but have yet to start BD @_@ Will prob. finish off other games first before playing it.
Didn’t you once say that Kenzan!'s gameplay was a step down somewhat of 3? That 3’s gameplay improved over the first games?
Regardless, either I’m just teasing you/messing with you or you’re just thinking up lame excuses to not drop some cash to play DS =V
It’s worth playing for the ending alone; everything you like about Kiryu’s character is epitomized thru it’s ending.
Plus you get to play as Majima Goro; WHY DO YOU HATE MAJIMA GORO?! Is he the Yakuza you’ve always wanted to be but afraid that by playing his scenario you realize just how pathetic a human being you are compared to his greatness?
]Nah it’s def. me teasing you mate ;3
If there is one thing we agree upon is that we are both hype for Yakuza 5-

Pretty sure JPN sales would be more than enough, since they’d need an additional budget just for the localization.
…I’ma still put the blame on you if this doesn’t get localized though =V
[SPOILER=]Dear SEGA, ANNOUNCE THIS AT E3!!!11111[/details]
Glad you posted mate, so that now I don’t have to make a double post just to show
YAKUZA 5 FIRST IMAGESSSSSsss1111!!!111
Haruka looks cute, which works since she wants to become an Idol.
Apparently the game takes place during Early 2013, so that’s 3 years after 4. Haruka would be 16 by then.
…and man Old Kiryu looks…great…but why does he look like Date? Did Nagoshi and co. take the easy route and redid Date’s face or something? lol
Saejima looks…different, prob. cuz he had a haircut.
Akiyama must love that shirt and pants lol.
New guy looks cool, hope his background is more interesting than what was announced.
…WTF happened to the orphanage though? Hope it didn’t close down…and why is Kiryu a taxi driver? Why is Saejima in prison again? WHAT HAPPENED TO SKY FINANACE, DID IT CLOSE DOWN?! IS HANA-CHNA STILL CHUBBY?!
Oh and if Haruka does fight, I wanna see her do a Komaki Dragon Essence~
It’s funny cause Saejima looks like Hamazaki while Kiryu like you mentioned looks like Date. Notice they are both close friends…? I wonder if this is suppose to signify something special and yeah Haruka has aged. What hurts me the most is the Japanese get to experience this wonderful game at the end of the year but like the other games we patiently wait. If I am not mistaken the end was the shortest wait time right? Hoping that is the case with this game!
As far as Saejima in prison no clue and Sky is something I am curious about as well. From what the previews say this game will be the grandest in scope in terms of city size, script and dramatic events.
[details=Spoiler]
Yeah that could be the case and I am curious to see what he did with his position in the Tojo clan because as well all know it seems Kazuma was the only level headed leader and everyone he ever passed it to messed it up.
Yeah summer 2013 is not only a good time but a realistic release date when compared to DS. I stopped getting platinum trophies for games but I will do it for Y5 rofl though the scope of this game tells me it is going to be a nightmare. I’m curious what they did in the minigame department because they have a truckload but most have existed since the very first game. They have had graphical improvements and some subgames to mix up the rules but this new engine should be interesting. For vets of the series I think it will be very hard to impress in that department but new players will gobble it up no matter what.
Eh DS’ Platinum wasn’t thaaaaaaaaaaaaat hard, it’s do-able but irritating.
…speaking of DS, it’s ending is a billion times better than whatever Mass Effect 3 gave you.
