There is no question that the arcade version of ST is superior to all. But I would have to agree with Alex here. A number of characters become little more than punching bags without square gates. It’ll be a pain to use Claw, Guile, and Boxer if you can’t reliably go from corner to corner. Claw and Guile in particular have to hit 4 corners in rapid succession to activate their super moves. Boxer is almost as bad if you’re trying to combo out of a low jab.
Does anyone own superguns that allow input from PS connections? Cuz that would be ideal.
Nate, did you give Zach the tapes from the last tournament?
I know that I’m basically sick and tired of CCC and even if it is a dollar to enter, I doubt I would pay to play on that version. I’m really glad I didn’t spend any money on that game. Also in my match against Eric Vega (which was on the cabinet) I was able to do everything I wanted without any problem and that included Chun supers.
EDIT-This is Mandel btw. Frank doesn’t play Chun Li and he didn’t play Eric Vega so yeah.
I believe a supergun would just be riDICulous and excessive, the ST cabinet is already there. It seems like there were a number of matches that took place on the cabinet anyway, don’t see why we need to stick with CCC2. I hate that version with a passion, and now that HD is coming out, there is no reason to play it. For the time being we could just keep shit simple and use that cabinet.
Sorry, I didn’t see this thread, I don’t check NW forums except for when Preppy’s, Julien’s, or my own ST thread gets bumped. I just found the brackets, how should I post it…? I mean, what format do I type it out on? Not sure how to read this shit.
Here, I’ll be ghetto, first name w/ asterix indicates winner:
First round:
*Frank vs. BYE
*Mike D vs. BYE
*David vs. BYE
*Mo vs. BYE (HOW DID HE GET A BYE, DUDE IS HELLA GOOD.)
*WasFemto vs. BYE
*Keith vs Andrew
*Brian vs BYE
*Julian vs BYE (Why did I get a bye?)
*Julien vs Jetay
*Pablo vs BYE (GO MEX!)
*99 vs Zach
*Sam vs BYE
*Nate vs BYE
*Sean vs BYE
*Eric vs BYE
*Mandel vs BYE
Why are there so many byes, wtf?
Round 2 winners bracket:
*Frank vs Mike D
*Mo vs. David
*Keith vs. WasFemto
*Julian vs. Brian
*Julien vs. Pablo
*Sam vs 99
*Nate vs. Sean
*Mandel vs. Eric
BTW I refuse to play a tournament on Preppy’s cabinet. I have problems crouch blocking on 1p side, and even if I didn’t, the cabinet is WAY TOO SMALL for my fatass to comfortably stand square in front of my controls. Mix in me AND NATE MONTES and it gets fucking ridiculous. I have to basically try to reach around to even input a motion.
I would play tournaments only on Beaseley’s cab or another one with adequate shoulder space. That cab is fine for casual play, but when I am playing serious nothing is more infuriating than not being able to play comfortable.
Round 4 of the winner’s bracket is missing, he skipped right to the winner’s finals. Still, thanks for posting. It’s good to see the details.
I had considered scanning and posting the brackets as images for season one. I think this would be a good idea for season two, as Julian’s post seems a little convoluted. Also, players can review how they did on their own–instead of organizers having to dig up the brackets and reference the outcomes before reporting back.
That BYE dude is hella weak. I must’ve taken his ass out 4 times in the Marvel bracket. Seriously though, now many BYEs did I have in the Marvel tournament? I went 0-2, and I think I tied for 9th or something.
Actually, brackets are always drawn up in powers of 2. Since 18 players exceed a bracket of 16, 32 is the only bracket that fits. Also, Nate opted not to seed anyone for the ST bracket. I think this was due to the drama created after the last time out-of-towners entered the ST tournament. He simply focused on keeping Portland players separate from other Portland players. I’m not sure exactly what methods he employed. This wasn’t a big deal, since it’s the first tournament of the season.
Stoner moment. I have no recollection of this match at all. I remember say hi to Mike, but I honestly don’t recall playing him at all. I remember a Claw/Claw match of wall dive gayness, but I don’t remember if it was Mike.
HAHAHAHAHA!!
You’d think the dude would be able to differentiate his name from that other guy by now.
Dude, really, really sorry about the double jeopardy.
This was the only match that I watched, since I was playing Marvel most of the time. But it was really friggin’ good. SamY shows his versatility yet again by repping Dhalsim.
Again, sorry I cheesed so much. I finally figured out last Wednesday (at Beasley’s) why this match-up is labeled as 8:2 on T-Akiba.
Wanna see the tape of this. Don’t remember much other than storing the flip kick from full screen, then countering your TAP/rush with standing fierce. Nate, have you given Zach the tapes yet?
Put 2 fat dudes like myself in front of it, and gg life. I must concur on everything except giving Nate the reach around. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I’m not into that kinda thing.
Doh! Was hoping to watch what I missed while playing MvC2 upstairs. Julian asked me after the tournament whether I thought it was the best showing yet. I’m not sure what I told him at the time. Upon reflection, I gotta say, we’ve come a long way since j.short x6.
About our second match, I remember at least one time where I jumped into your walldive throw when I meant to do buffalo headbutt… but it was a very good match imo.
Winner’s Fourth round:
*Julian Blake vs Mo
*Julien Beaseley vs Nate
I REALLY wanna watch these tapes cus a) I missed most of the matches due to poker, b) there were Portland people so it’ll be nice to see some new blood, and c) I think I played my best ever, I have very few complaints about my own performance.
edit: Keith you said something like “I don’t care, fuck ST”, which I do beleive annoyed me thoroughly at the time.
It’s all good. I’m just hoping that I can start beating some of the top-tier seattle players and placing 1st or 2nd sometime. I really don’t want to be ranked higher than better players than myself just because I have a good attendance record, which is what almost happened with me 3 points away from outranking Mandel, who has to be said to have been better than me last year in tournament play.
I’m really trying to improve as a player.
QUESTION FOR ALL POKER PLAYERS, MARVEL, CVS2, ST, WHATEVER
So that I don’t get threatened with DQ (twice) again, what is the usual system for handling people who have matches who are also in poker? I thought it was standard practice to wait a few minutes for the blinds to pass the poker player by. Especially when they are at Final table. I specifically remember ST waiting for Julien Beaseley for quite a bit longer than I was waited for because he was in top 3 in poker.
I’m just asking for what the typical procedure is, because last tournament I definitely felt like I was singled out and it was very inconsistent, because there has NEVER been a time when I’ve been threatened with DQ before and I’ve always been able to wait a few minutes for the blinds to pass me by.
In other news, I would have ranked a lot higher had Beasley not been the the second person I fought. What the fuck. I will defeat SamY one of these days, he is a beast.
There were 18 players. Brackets have to be a power of 2 (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, or 128 for example). 18 players is more than 16, so we can’t use the 16 man bracket. We have to use the 32 man bracket.
No, this was a single isolated incident at the first and only poker tournament I attended, in May. It was my first time at preppy’s and I did not know the ettiquete. Frank posted that it was rude for poker players to have to wait for fighting game players, and vice versa, and that if a conflict came up, you had to pick one to sacrifice.
I think Frank was right on and I stopped playing poker tournaments for that reason. Frank also practices what he preaches. He was up for ST and Marvel, and informed Nate, the tourney director, that Marvel took priority for him and he would rather than a loss in ST if it came to that. Frank understands that “waiting a few minutes” is not okay, because then the tournament takes 9 hours to finish.
Poker is no different. Everyone is welcome to play multiple games, but you pick the one you care about.
I rudely asked everyone to wait for me in my first ST/poker tournment in May. I was wrong to do that, and I apologize to everyone in ST and everyone in Poker. Frank called me out and was absolutely right to do so. I decided that since I don’t like being blinded out so I choose not to play in poker. I would love to have my cake and eat it too and play both, and have everyone wait for me, but I understand that that is rude to other players and so I pick what my top priority.
Please stop inferring that this is something I’ve done multiple times. Please stop using my name in a context which implies that it’s something I’ve done on a regular basis. Please stop referring to my name as if it’s something that I condone, or something that I get away with. I did it once, it was four months ago, and it was my first time at Preppy’s. I’ve never done it since. I’ve apologized for it, and I completely agree that it is wrong to do.
This is not some made up rule that Nate or I or anyone came down with. This has been discussed repeatedly on this forum for several months now. This is the standard mode of operation at Preppys.
I’m gonna have to agree with Julian/Frank here, you gotta pick one or the other. If you really think you’ll be making some money in one of em, pick the one with more money or whatever. It is annoying to wait on people, and thats whats wonderful about poker, you don’t really have to, you can just blind people out if they decide playing games is what they wanna do.
Also, regarding blinds, generally they aren’t hurting people except for the really short stacks until it hits like 500/1000 maybe 400/800. Nobody the whole night was really that concerned about waiting for blinds to pass em up as far as I saw that night, and most nights really, so take that however you will. Just calm down and have some fun.
