SD Hiryu no Ken Densetsu Gameplay Discussion

I made a similar topic at www.gamefaqs.com, but nobody is contributing at all.

SD Hiryu no Ken Densetsu is the sequel to the N64 game Flying Dragon (or Hiryu no Ken Twin in JPN) and only came out in Japan for N64. It was developed by Culture Brain. Densetsu is better for the following reasons: 1. returning characters have been rebalanced. 2. new characters (some new, some from Culture Brains other games, some are clones). 3. completely revamped item/level up system.

Not much will be discussed about the item/level up system. Go to Gnik’s FAQ at
http://www.gamefaqs.com/n64/576685-sd-hiryu-no-ken-densetsu/faqs/54010 to found out about more about it.

Controls
Default buttons are:
A = Kick
B = Punch
C/ = Special (or Buster)
C< = Super (or Secret Buster)
C/\ & C> = Use Item
R = Block
L or Z = Side Step (optional)

Notation I’ll be using for discussion is:
P = Punch
K = Kick
B = Buster
SB = Secret Buster
I = Item
BL = Block
SS = Side Step
I will use the number notation for inputs of moves etc.

If you are link 2 P’s it displayed as Px2. If it is a attack string, then it is displayed as PP.

Stuff you need to know about the game

Stats
After selecting your character, you will notice 4 different stats. They are:

Fire - Displays Physical Power
Wind - Displays Throw Power
Thunder - Displays Projectile Power and Defense to them
Ice - Displays Physical and Throw Defense.

Mind’s Eye or Shingan
This is a mechanic that the series has used in just about every game. You will notice a little colored circle on a characters body part, that is the Shingan. There are 3 different types of Shingan (they will be listed by color):

Pink
How it appears: It appears for every 2 super bars gained
Effects when hit: Unable to block and stunned for a couple seconds.

Green
How it appears: Blocking more than attacking.
Effects when hit: Same as Pink, but greater damage.

Red
How it appears: Health bar is half without doing any damage to opponent.
Effects when hit: Instanct Death (unblockable).

The HUD
Health Bar

This bar displays what your health is.

Super Bar
This bar displays how many stocks you have. They are used for your characters Secret Busters and Treasure Busters. By default, you can only store up to 3 bars.

Links
A link most will know is being able to combo from one attack to another without canceling the animation of the previous attack. Almost every character can do links. Most can link 5P to another 5P and go from there.

Attack Strings
Strings are a series of moves that may or may not combo. They are a combination of P and K, only a few have B in them. Most knock the opponent down. Ex. PPKKK for Ryuhi.

SD
A defensive technique that counter-attacks upon catching the opponents attack.

I’ll start w/ some Ryuhi info

Ryuhi
Like other characters, Ryuhi can from St. P. His 4+B(easy), 8+B(middle) and 6+B(hard) Busters can be linked from St. P.

6B
This attack is great, as it has 2 uses. First is to press C/ 2 more times to do 2 more kicks, used mostly as an ending move. The other is that the first attack can be used to link.

4B
This move is great, as it gives Ryuhi another option to juggle the opponent. The move is made better, because it can be linked from St. P(or 5+P).

8SB
This is potentially Ryuhi’s best Secret Buster in the game. If combo-ed in a juggle correctly, then Ryuhi might be able to continue juggle the opponent.

Punch SD
This is his best Super Defense tech. You could attack (like a Supers) after a successful SD.

Some combos you could do with this in mind:
j.Px2, 66, 6B, 5P, 4B, 5Pxx236+SB
j.Px2, 66, 6B, 5P, 4B, 5Pxx8SB, 8B
j.Px2, 5Px2, 4B, 5Pxx5SB

I used to love Flying Dragon. Do you play this on PJ64? I remember Flying Dragon didn’t emulate properly(it also was broken).

I did play the sequel on PJ64. The emulation for the game should be fine except for menu’s. Does PJ64 have online? I’ll have to set it up again. I need to get a controller converter soon, as I do not want to unlock everything again.

have both the 1st one and this import both great games but didnt it play this much because of got maybe 3 to 4 yrs ago and have a bunch of other games to played. did really want this for a while after played the 1st one.

theres’ a version of pj64(called project64k) that is pj64 integrated with kaillera. there’s also some servers up by a group i believe called classic games arena. been a while since i’ve played ki and other games on kaillera :slight_smile:

Cool, I’ll check this out when I can, maybe we could play some SDHnKD.

I’ll post some things for a couple characters.

Min Min

2KKKKK
This attack string is pretty good in ending juggles.

5SB
This Secret Buster is great. You can juggle the opponent with this move twice. After the second time, you could end it a couple of ways: 1. Finish with 2KKKKK 2. Finish with 236+SB 3. Finish with 8SB then by 2KKKKK 4. Heal with 2SB

PPPP
An attack string that juggles on last hit.

PPKK
This attack string is really good, as the last K can be canceled into a Secret Buster.

8SB
This Secret Buster is great to use either juggles or even link combos. Plus if timed correctly, you can combo 2KKKKK

6K
This is another attack that allows you to juggle.

2SB
This Secret Buster is great as it does 2 things: 1. Knocks opponent away 2. Gives Life recovery ability. Only down side is it is pricey at 2 Super Bars.

Combos you could do w/ Min Min:
j.Px2, 5Px4xx8SB, 2KKKKK
j.Px2, 5Px2, PPKKxx5SB, 5SB, 8SB, 2KKKKK
236+B, 236+SB

Hayato

P6PPP
Last hit of attack string juggles

6P
This attack it great, as it juggles.

8B
The Genryuka is Hayato’s SRK move. Good as an AA and good to end combos.

8SB
A Secret Buster version of 8B that does more hits and damage.

236+SB
This Secret Buster is great as it hits multiple times and juggles on last hit.

2SB
This Secret Buster is his most powerful one. It does cost 2 Super Bars, but if it misses, you only lose 1. Can be comboed a number of ways.

Combos you could do w/ Hayato:
j.Px2, 5Px2, 6P, 6Kxx2SB
j.Px2, 5Px3xx236+SB, 6Kxx2SB
