âPlay the GameâŚâ
GAME OVER, man, GAME OVER
So, I decided to rent Guilty Gear XX a little while ago. Itâs very simple to say we were excited. Well, I wasnât. The series, to me, has been one of the greatest disappointments in a long while. I would love to love this series, with its cute Chinese chick, and⌠um⌠well.
Its unique graphic-style (I say this with a great deal of reserve), spastic play-style, and its varied cast of characters have made this game quickly one of the most popular 2D fighters in recent days.
Sadly, many of these people are not actually delving into the seriesâ many problems. So, a quick little look into the game⌠shall we?
Woah, man, The COLORS!
The graphics of this game are the biggest draw. The high-resolution graphics are amazing, simply jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Youâll all ways hear about the resolution. Thatâs the only real thing to talk about. To that, I give a base score of: A Holy CRAP
Itâs amazingly colorful as well, but it really doesnât translate well into this new version. In a move straight out of Darkstalkers, they screw with established backgrounds, and give really messed up background-colors. Like Night Warriors, the colors are just sillylooking. Pity they didnât make new backgrounds. D+ Why did they do thisâŚ
The character models are pretty impressive due to the high resolution. Theyâre not really anything to write home about, though. The animation isnât Third Strike, despite the boasts of its beauty. Superficial beauty isnât everything. In summary. Great models. Bad animation. C+ Above Average
Overall: B
Rockinâ Tunes, Dude!
Iâm not much of a soundtrack guy, so Iâll probably just briefly go over this. The background music is more or less what youâd expect from a game where you can fight as Axl Low versus Slayer. Rock. Rock nâ Roll. Itâs a beautiful thing, but still canât beat out the sheer joy of beating the living crap out of each other to jazz tunes.
So, I give it a basic⌠A. Itâs that good a soundtrack.
The voice acting, on the other hand, is not as good. Itâs downright awful in the Arcade Mode. You can barely hear it over the gameâs soundtrack. On the other hand, in Story Mode, itâs pretty good. Iâm not big into Japanese Seiyuus, but they improved considerably compared to in-game. Ahem. A certain video game creator needs to let someone with talent voice Sol. That is all. B Oh well.
That gives sound an overall score of B+.
The Story of My Life
Okay, hereâs where the game begins to go downhill. Everyone knows King of Fighters is the so-called Plot-King. And yet, now many people claim this is. Theyâre all wrong. Project Justiceâs story mode is the best. And as a wise move, XX tried to copy it.
They did it entirely wrong.
Eventually, youâre going to get tired of fighting everyone you meet (for reasons soon to be covered), no matter the reason. Some of the fights are just so contrived you wonât even want to bother. Story Mode is the best part of the story. Itâs worth a couple of play-throughs, but not enough to warrant playing all of the games.
Arcade mode is just sad.
C- Below average story told in a good story mode
The Gameplay, bub.
No. Just NO. This game loses all merit in purchasing the moment we touch upon it. This game has the worst fighting game engine since MvC2. Honestly, the game is reliant on chain combos using four different attacks.
A hard slash â the most powerful physical attack, but itâs slow
A weak slash â Good for poking, and for setting up.
Punch and Kick â And these are just to start combos.
There are dust attacks: Useless launchers, there are sweeps, which are more useful, and, of course, various special moves.
Any amateur can easily get used to the controls, theyâre simple and easy to master. But, maybe therein lies the problem. The game doesnât usually require anything beyond chains and some supers afterwards.
Roman Cancels, something I donât use much myself, are apparently the most innovative part of the game.
The game uses a power bar that you must conserve for Roman Cancels and supers. Itâs easy to fill.
But, most importantly, the game is spastic. It takes very little skill to do a killer combo. You play the game rushdown, trying to do a series of combos before the other fighter can do the same to you. There is no major difference in play-style between Millia Rage and Sol Badguy. Which is a pity, because the sometimes original cast is lacking in anything interesting.
D- it lacks everything that makes a fighting game deep
Balancing issues, are also major. Chipp Zanuff is unable to last five minutes against any decent competition. He just lacks health. There are other ways to balance a character than to simply make him die faster.
Potemkin is another problem.
C- Theyâve made characters unplayable, but not all of them
Overall: D but hear me outâŚ
And nowâŚthe finale
To end, I donât think it would be right to compare this game with masterfully crafted fighters like CvS2 or King of Fighters 2000. This game just canât cut it in comparison, however, there are other games that it probably is closer to it.
This game is a Darkstalkers game. It feels like it. The new characters are something right out of a Darkstalkers game. The gameplay is right out of Darkstalkers. Sadly, this isnât as memorable a game as Darkstalkers, but it still is a game worth playing.
Despite my dislike of the gameplay and story, the game is not a bad game. At times it is quite enjoyable. If you like Darkstalkers, especially, youâll enjoy this game. As such, I rate Guilty Gear XX, out of ten, asâŚ
6: A worthwhile rental, especially, but may not be your cup of fighting game tea.
