I discovered that Marge and Homer’s team attack rapes all the bosses except for the final boss.
I played some Simpsons out of nostalgia. Man, the graphics and game presentation is still outstanding.
Every character has a 360 move that’s done by pressing four directions followed by attack. So you can either do 360 then attack, or something like left, right, left, right, attack. Marge in particular has a pretty good 360 move. Of course, nothing beats the regular jump kick though.
Any fans of Double Dragon Advance? It’s my favorite Double Dragon game. Yes, call me crazy, but I like it better than Return of Double Dragon or Double Dragon 2.
Double Dragon Advance is awesome.
-More enemies on-screen than any other Double Dragon game. No slowdown whatsoever.
-Tons of moves. Every single one of them has a use. Even the headbutt and regular jump kick are useful thanks to juggles.
-Juggles! You can do combos such as uppercut, headbutt, regular jump kick. Or even uppercut, headbutt, flying knee with the correct distance.
-Mounted punches! Every beat’em up needs mounted punches or ground attacks at the least. Heck, even one of the first beat’em ups ever (Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun) had mounted punches.
-Good weapons. I said “good,” not “great.” IMO the most satisfying-to-use weapons in beat’em up history are the nunchakus in Return of Double Dragon, the katana with Max in SOR2, and the Sword of Legend used by the Dwarf in Shadow over Mystara. But the kali sticks in DDA are still pretty sweet.
-I wish they had brought back the kung-fu bosses from RODD. I used to kick them on purpose just to see them do that sweet reversal move.

I’ve been playing more Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder these days, and I need to completely rehaul my previous character rankings.
Revenge of Death Adder is badass as fuck.
I thought the best character in that game was Trix, because they can make health potions or something like that?
I’ve been playing the port of TMNT 1989 on XBLA. It’s the western version of course, though I don’t know if there’s any differences from the Japanese version besides allowing four players. Anyone know if this port is okay? Minus the ugly character portraits they took from the 2007 movie of course.
That’s what I always thought too. Trix is fast, and can heal, and has an awesome dashing attack that can infinite the final boss. However, once you learn how to take down the bosses without taking damage, then the dashing attack becomes irrelevant. Dora does extremely good damage with her dive kick which is arguably the best move in the game; she has the second fastest walking speed; she has the best offensive magic in the game in terms of damage per potion; she does the same or more damage than Stern with all her moves except for her dashing attack and her dashing-jump-downward-attack.
1CC’d Alien vs. Predator yesterday with Linn. Such a great game.
I’d say Linn is the easiest if you are going for an 1CC. She can trivialize most boss battles with ease, Soukeiha is excellent for crowd control and extremely abusable, her gun is the best in the game and you can cancel the reload animation for extra safety, airthrow combos do tons of damage, can speedkill anything and you can set up them easily (from standing attacks, down + attack stabs, wall bounces, jumping shots, etc), everything she does is extremely damaging and safe.
I see Dutch as a Punisher-style character, because he can abuse throw invincibility frames to stay safe most of the time and do easy crowd control. Sure, he may be slow as hell, but if you know how to properly abuse your throw invincibility he’s as good as anyone IMO. Funnily enough, the world record for AvsP is a Dutch score.
I think it’s a pretty balanced game overall tier wise. Weapons are extremely strong in general too so it helps in that regard. It comes down mostly to what kind of play style you enjoy more.
Before AvsP, I 1CC’d The Punisher, the first game in the genre I seriously played. It’s fun and a good way to get into these games, but a bit too easy since Punisher is just too powerful for the game’s sake. He has great mobility, throws, infinites and weapon usage all rolled into one. He can trivialize even the final Kingpin battle with his piledriver infinite. Still, being able to do all that stuff is very fun, but it would have been a better game if the pacing was more frantic as in AvsP to even things out.
After refining my AvsP play some more I’ll move to Armored Warriors, which looks great but also has a reputation for being extremely hard (and from what I’ve played, at least it seems to be very punishing since any error costs you 30%-60% of your life and life refills are very scarce compared to other games in the genre), so I wonder if it’s a bit too much for my current skill level.
Finally, it’s sad to see how this genre has pretty much been abandoned and maligned by almost everyone. Besides IGS there’s nearly no new good stuff, most developers have moved to shallow bloated DMC/GOW style 3D beat’em ups, and people generally see 2D scrolling beat em ups as cheap quarter munchers. I’d love to see a resurgence, but it probably won’t happen.
Great to see Open Bor getting some love. If you’re looking for more good Openbor games I’d recommend:
Rocket Viper 2
Rocket Viper
Streets of Rage Z
Bare Knuckle VI
Bare Knuckle Vacuum v3
MK Outworld Assassins (great weapons based game with fatalities.)
Jennifer (Weird horror themed beat em up.)
Golden Axe Myth (uses it’s own sprites)
TMNT Red Sky Battle (part made by the guy who made Night Slashers X IIRC)
Art of Fighting:Beats of Rage Remix III (Same guy who mad the Return of the Double Dragon mod)
These are probably the best ones I think of at them moment but there is probably 4 or 5 I didn’t add.
In my opinion there is absolutely no way that Dutch is as good as the other three characters. If you’re talking about high scores, then that’s an entirely different story, because you would spam the least damaging yet highest scoring moves (such as Dutch’s regular throw) and abuse enemy respawning. That would be like saying that Clark is the best character in the Metal Slug games because he is the best at scoring. Dutch’s powerbomb is an awesome move with invincibility frames after the slam, and it’s a great move to chain together consecutively in specific situations. However, enemies have invincibility against grabs during certain attack animations; and this becomes much more apparent after the fourth stage or so, and you’ll notice that Dutch will just pass through enemies. Second, walking diagonally is slower than walking straight in this game; this game design lowers the efficiency of grabbing enemies because enemy attacks may sometimes come out before you can grab them. Therefore, besides the first few stages in the game, grabbing enemies becomes much more difficult to do without getting hit. The safest way to grab an enemy in the later stages (when enemy AI is turned up a notch) is to stand on a fallen enemy and grab him as he gets up. Certain enemies are easier to grab regardless of the stage, such as the Arachnoids. Dutch’s most reliable tool is his regular combo due to its speed and recovery. People playing with turbo buttons will probably find Dutch to be extremely effective. However, I think that turbo buttons completely take the skill and challenge out of beat’em up games. For instance, compare playing Final Fight with and without turbo buttons; the difference in difficulty is astounding. Dutch’s regular charge attack (jump button), without adding the clothesline at the end, is a great move, too, due to its high stun; you can hit an enemy with it repeatedly to take him to a wall where you can proceed to semi-infinite him into oblivion (it’s useful to take down 50% of the second boss’s life before his underlings even show up). The downsides are that his hitbox is his hurtbox, and you cannot grab a stunned enemy…
Linn is an awesome character; however, the Predators can get the same results (much better results in the case of the Warrior in my opinion) but with much less effort. The only difficult boss in the game is the final boss, and the most efficient way to fight her is with all the weapons lying around.
I’m going to take back what I said about Dora being the best character in Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder. There’s a player on youtube called shinkimkoha and he ranks Trix higher than Dora. Considering how amazing he is at this game, I’m going to take his word as the bible. Check out his Golden Axe no-magic-no-mounts-one-coin-clear videos.

Goah is very good in GA:ROTD just on the strength of his A+B rolling attack, it can 1 hit kill tree men and allot of other enemies. It has almost no start up or recovery. I like Trix for multiplayer, for his apples
Every character’s A+B attack does the same damage of 23.
Check out the following website; it lists the damage for every move in the game.
http://tacota.web.fc2.com/goldenrev/index.html
You’ll see something like the following: 46 / 31 / 46 / 31
From left to right the columns represent Stern / Dora / Goah / Trix
Here’s a very good website about Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara if you can read Chinese:
As you can see, the elf’s attack hitbox remains the same regardless of what weapon you use. This applies to all the characters except when they use weapons that have unique attack animations.
Was SOM ever tiered?
I would think that the Captain is the best in Captain Commando because of his f f jump and a (flame thrower move), just rinse and repeat (maybe the easy mode of the game?)
